Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host its annual Virginia Queen Piano Competition Friday, May 5, at 3 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

“The event was established nearly 40 years ago by Virginia Queen, a former Ouachita piano professor who just recently passed away.” said Dr. Lei Cai, professor of music at Ouachita. “She established the competition to encourage piano students to excel.”

The annual PRISM concert features a variety of ensembles from Ouachita’s Division of Music. The collaborative program includes all instrumental faculty as well as most of the instrumental ensembles on campus. However, this is not just a typical band concert.

Two compositions by Dr. Patrick Houlihan, professor and chair of music theory, composition and music industry at Ouachita Baptist University, recently were presented at national and regional conferences.

“Snoqualmie Passages” for alto saxophone and piano was selected to be presented at the joint national conference of the College Music Society and the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors held last fall in Santa Fe, N.M. It was performed in historic St. Francis Auditorium by two Ouachita faculty members, Dr. Lei Cai, professor of music, on piano and Dr. Caroline Taylor, professor of music, on saxophone.

Broadway performer Jacob Keith Watson, a 2011 Ouachita Baptist University graduate, will return to his alma mater Jan. 26-27 to perform a recital and lead a masterclass.

Watson will be accompanied by collaborative pianist Jason Weisinger, who has performed with the Boston POPS and is scheduled to perform in a workshop in conjunction with the Metropolitan Opera and Cincinnati Opera.

The Jan. 26 recital will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Ouachita’s McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 each, and the performance is open to the public.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Wind Ensemble recently released a CD titled “Simple Gifts.” The CDs costs $15 and features the 2012 and 2016 Wind Ensembles.

The 2016 Wind Ensemble performs the CD’s title section “Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs” by Frank Ticheli, including “In Yonder Valley,” “Dance,” “Here Take This Lovely Flower” and “Simple Gifts.” Other selections performed by this ensemble are the “Mayflower Overture” by Ron Nelson and “A Sacred Suite” by Brant Karrick, which includes “Spirit of the Ages Fanfare,” “Consolation” and “True Happiness/How Firm a Foundation.”

This is the video of the fall 2016 performance of the Ouachita Baptist University Steel Bands, inlcuding Tiger Steel and Pan Jouvet, directed by Ryan Lewis. Tiger Steel, the Advanced Steel Drum Ensemble, specializes in the performance of calypso and soca music from the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago—the birthplace of steel drums—but also performs a wide variety of styles from jazz, pop, and rock to classical, funk, and Latin.
