An Investigation Into The New Testament Understanding Of "Israel", Ashton Hurst Apr 2023

An Investigation Into The New Testament Understanding Of "Israel", Ashton Hurst

Honors Theses

God chose his people in the Old Testament (OT) beginning with a man named Abraham. In Genesis chapter 12, God makes a promise to Abraham, "I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, I will curse anyone who treats you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you." 1 From Abraham, Israel developed into a great nation that followed God intently sometimes but ultimately found themselves in a never-ending circle of betraying, …

It is my prayer that each reader finds this resource helpful as they fight the good fight (Ephesians 6:12).

Sexual Abuse In The Protestant Church, Madeline Grace Knight Apr 2021

Sexual Abuse In The Protestant Church, Madeline Grace Knight

Honors Theses

Sexual abuse is a tragic reality of living in a fallen world. Though abuse of any kind is inexcusable, Christians know that it is the product of the evil, sinful hearts of mankind. Unfortunately, churches have not escaped the grasp of this evil; sexual abuse is as much a reality for God’s people as it is for the rest of the world. No one is untouchable, and everyone must be aware of the truth; however, I will caution readers that this paper discusses dark, horrible practices that can bother anyone, especially survivors and others with firsthand experiences of abuse. I …

Respect: A Bridge Between Inupiaq Tradition And Christianity, Ashley Sharpe Jan 2018

Respect: A Bridge Between Inupiaq Tradition And Christianity, Ashley Sharpe

Honors Theses

For the indigenous peoples of Alaska, there is an ever-present tension between maintaining cultural identity and participating in the modern world. Like the indigenous peoples of most of the rest of the world, they have experienced colonization, subjugation, and appropriation by other cultures, starting with the arrival of Russians and improving but continuing with the transition from Russian control to American statehood. While the relationship between the United States and the indigenous peoples of Alaska has improved, the influence of other cultures on the First Nations peoples is undeniable, and they have been left to figure out how to identify …

Nothing But The Blood Of Jesus?: O'Connor's Critique Of Protestantism In Wise Blood, Jessica Saunders May 2017

Nothing But The Blood Of Jesus?: O'Connor's Critique Of Protestantism In Wise Blood, Jessica Saunders

English Class Publications

Published in 1949, Flannery O’Connor’s first novel, Wise Blood, satirizes not Christianity itself, but rather man’s twisted practice of the faith that O’Connor held so dear. O’Connor, a devout Roman Catholic living in the Bible Belt, writes to critique the heresy, hypocrisy, and apathy that pervaded the lives of Protestants in the South—a region that O’Connor describes as “hardly Christ-centered” but “most certainly Christ-haunted” (Mystery and Manners 44). O’Connor portrays the characters in Wise Blood as Protestants, non-Christians, or the nihilistic protagonist and hero himself, Hazel Motes, who in his rejection of the gospel, founds the Church of Christ …

Story-Based Spiritual Formation For College Students, Anna Sikes Apr 2015

Story-Based Spiritual Formation For College Students, Anna Sikes

Honors Theses

The typical way that spiritual formation of college students is approached tends to be therapeutic instead of centered around God's big story. I believe the current approaches to spiritual growth do not adequately meet the needs of today's emerging adults because they are self-centered and simplistic. College is a time when those who want to grow can if they are placed in intentional, story-based process that allows them to realize their part in God's grand story. This becomes a way for those who are on a search for deep, authentic faith to find out how to grow. As a college …

Effects Of Modern History On Welsh Theology Post-1904, Hannah Diaz Jan 2015

Effects Of Modern History On Welsh Theology Post-1904, Hannah Diaz

Honors Theses

The Welsh Revival of 1904 transformed the Welsh Church interdenominationally for an entire generation; however, the church has since been affected by global and local events, causing it to stray from conservative evangelical theology, and largely fragmenting believers between traditional and charismatic leanings. The principles of Welsh theology have been little studied since the revival other than isolated segments focusing on sermons, journals, or biographies of revival leaders. The Welsh Revival has become recognized as a definitive event in Welsh history but little work has actually been done to trace the effects of it until present day. This research merging …

A History Of The Independent Bible Church, Karen Lynn Dearing Jan 2001

A History Of The Independent Bible Church, Karen Lynn Dearing

Honors Theses

Increasingly more influential in America today is the Independent Bible Church. Bible churches, in general, are denominationally unrelated, believing that the local church can best function independent of a denominational hierarchy. The Independent Bible Church is one of many nondenominational or independent churches that are attended by 5% of the adult population in America. In order to understand this church, it is necessary to trace its roots back to the beginning of certain ideas that eventually led to the foundation and became the theology of the Independent Bible Church.

Revolutionary events have taken place over the last five centuries that …

Spiritual Leaders And Political Resisters: The Confessional Church In Nazi Germany, Heidi Johanna Klarhorst Jan 2001

Spiritual Leaders And Political Resisters: The Confessional Church In Nazi Germany, Heidi Johanna Klarhorst

Honors Theses

As the Weimar Republic deteriorated and Adolf Hitler rose in popularity, individual church leaders, like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, began to worry. Others, like Martin Niemoller, rejoiced at first, thinking that Hitler could restore Germany to its former glory, but changed their opinions and denounced Hitler's government when the Nazis attacked the churches. What motivated those two men and others to stand up for what they believed, and what obstacles did they overcome in order to be heard? To fully understand their story and the story of the Confessional Church in Nazi Germany, it is necessary to look at some of the …
