Revival Of Traditions In Post-Soviet Central Asia, Anara Tabyshalieva
Revival Of Traditions In Post-Soviet Central Asia, Anara Tabyshalieva
History Faculty Research
The collapse of the Soviet Union gave the unexpected gift of independence in 1991 to five new states in Central Asia-Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. In common with other post-socialist countries, these states are currently going through a transition period characterized by serious and worsening social and economic problems. The 55 million people who live in the region are facing problems of overpopulation, a chronic decline in living standards, and ecological crisis. There has also been a revival of patriarchal traditions and a reversal of female emancipation: The combination of Soviet and Muslim components has led to an …
The Creative Writer: An Examination Of Early Childhood Environment, Psychopathology, And Personality Traits, Cynthia I. Hagan
The Creative Writer: An Examination Of Early Childhood Environment, Psychopathology, And Personality Traits, Cynthia I. Hagan
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The early childhood environment, the pathology, and the personality traits of non-eminent creative writers were compared to those of non-creative artists. The stated issues were examined using a thirty-item, forced choice questionaire. The results indicated that the non-creative writer group experienced more early childhood trauma than did the non-creative artist group. The findings are congruent with previous research and supports the position that early childhood environment plays a significant role in the development of creativity.
Gender Problems: A Sociolinguistic Study Of The Grammatical Gender Problems That Face The Learners Of Arabic As A Second Language, Nohad Hemmoudeh
Gender Problems: A Sociolinguistic Study Of The Grammatical Gender Problems That Face The Learners Of Arabic As A Second Language, Nohad Hemmoudeh
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The aim of this sociolinguistic study is to examine the grammatical gender difficulties that non-Arabic speakers face when they learn Arabic as a second language (ASL) This work concentrates on English and French speakers and compares the errors each make while learning Arabic. The choice of these two languages resulted from two factors: (1) since the author is fluent in English and French, she conducted her research on speakers of both languages; (2) since both Arabic and French are considerably more marked morphologically than English, the researcher is interested in examining the type of errors made by the speakers of …
The Sedition Act Of 1798 And The Incorporation Of Seditious Libel Into First Amendment Jurisprudence, Christopher D. Jenkins
The Sedition Act Of 1798 And The Incorporation Of Seditious Libel Into First Amendment Jurisprudence, Christopher D. Jenkins
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
On July 14, 1798, more than six years after the ratification of the First Amendment, the Federalist controlled Congress of the United States passed the Sedition Act. This Act, codifying the substantive English common law of seditious libel, made it a federal crime to publish defamatory matter against the Congress, President, or government of the United States. Republican critics of the act argued it to be unconstitutional as a violation of Congress’ limited powers, and the First Amendment’s press clause. Federalists, however, interpreted this clause to permit prosecutions for seditious libel. The ensuing public controversy over the Sedition Act represented …
Wading In The Lethe, Honor J. Mccain
Wading In The Lethe, Honor J. Mccain
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
To Honor (by Wendy Jones Johnson, circa 1976)
The rosebud mouth, the round, little thighs,
Our plump, bright elf with the dark, blue eyes
Our lives before were so incomplete
Soon the flutter inside of two, tiny feet
We thought we knew freedom
The years before you came
Now we know the wonder of creating life's flame
Aflame to grow, to flicker, and at last be an ember
To enrich our lives for years to remember
How we cherish and love you, your innocent glee,
You, the miracle of warmth and sensitivity.
My mother wrote this poem when I was …
Marlowe's Curious Queens: A Gender Study, Jonathan E. Porter
Marlowe's Curious Queens: A Gender Study, Jonathan E. Porter
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Christopher Marlowe's plays reflect the changing concepts of gender found within the time he wrote them, as Elizabethan England struggled with the contradictions between the ancient, rigid gender roles embodied in the Petrarchan model and the paradox of a female monarch who rejected all suitors. This struggle, coupled with the rising popularity of the companionate marriage that itself implied some degree of sexual equality, challenged fundamental patriarchal assumptions about gender, property, even government, and critical thinkers like Marlowe infused their works with ideas from the debates of the day. Marlowe's early plays, especially Tamburlaine I & II, reflect a …

The National Security Debate And The Truman Administration's Policy Toward China, 1947-1950, Robert D. Russell Ii
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
After World War II, the United States faced a new enemy: the Soviet Union. However, U. S. armed forces were rapidly demobilized after the war, which hindered the U. S. military’s capability to thwart the Soviet threat. Even though, Communism never had been an extreme threat to U. S. national security. World War II had leveled and destroyed much of the European and Asian economic infrastructure, which contributed to the appeal of this ideology. Therefore, many observers felt that international communism was now a threat to U. S. national security. Significantly, only the United States possessed the power to confront …

A Union Man: The Life Of C. Frank Keeney, Charles Belmont Keeney Iii
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The problem with West Virginia is that it is not controlled by West Virginians. For over a century coal operators, who do not make this state their home but rather the source of their income, have controlled the destiny of West Virginia and its people. The native mountaineers, unaware of the wealth beneath their feet, were either scattered throughout the state or became coal miners themselves. Since that time all West Virginians, not merely coal miners or former land owners, have been subjected to the will of out of state companies because they not only control the mines and the …

Canonicity And Commercialization In Woolf's Uniform Edition, John K. Young
Canonicity And Commercialization In Woolf's Uniform Edition, John K. Young
English Faculty Research
This paper considers Virginia Woolf the publisher alongside Virginia Woolf the author. While the Hogarth Press has long been known for making Woolf "the only woman in England free to write what I like," it also made her free to be published as she liked. Hogarth, Jane Marcus argues, "gave Woolf a way of negotiating the terms of literary publicity, and a space somewhere between the private, the coterie, and the public sphere" (144-5). I will examine one such negotiation, the Uniform Edition of Woolf's works, a series designed to capitalize on her growing recognition and marketability. Once the Woolfs …
Woolf’S Mrs. Dalloway, John K. Young
Woolf’S Mrs. Dalloway, John K. Young
English Faculty Research
The famous skywriting scene in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway owes more to 1920s advertising culture than has been previously recognized. In their rapt reading of the “Kreemo” aerial ad, the London pedestrians create both a commentary on consumerism and a model of collaborative, modernist reading.
