Transforming Collaborative Collection Development And Pedagogical Practice: Connecting Art And Special Collections To Authentic Student Learning, Rebecca Fitzsimmons, Heather Koopmans
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
This presentation discusses the intersection of collaborative collection development and pedagogical practice, specifically detailing how the creation of a new collection of Renaissance-era art prints in a university special collections department has transformed and blossomed into a multifaceted research opportunity for students. This print teaching collection became a central resource for the creation of an advanced print history course that engaged students in deep art historical research and professional development as they created and launched an original exhibition and accompanying digital publication including works from the print teaching collection. Throughout this process, students gained an understanding of both individual and …

Stoic Indulgence, Gratuitous Restraint: White Feelings And Campus Art, Bert Stabler
Stoic Indulgence, Gratuitous Restraint: White Feelings And Campus Art, Bert Stabler
Faculty Publications – Wonsook Kim School of Art
The 2010s saw a revival of reactionary politics on college campuses, which now appear to have paved the way for contemporary right-wing culture-war talking points regarding K–12 education. Revanchist attitudes around race, as well as gender and sexuality, can be linked to White Americans’ affective attachments to ideas of historical entitlement, which can be seen both in campus responses to university art programming and in acts of student vandalism. I describe a campus gallery exhibition I organized in 2016 around the theme of White affect, and I make connections between expressions of rage, anguish, and reasonableness on the part of …

The Gamification Of Code: Programming Through Play In Blended Classrooms, Kristin Carlson, Rick Valentin
The Gamification Of Code: Programming Through Play In Blended Classrooms, Kristin Carlson, Rick Valentin
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Publications
Teaching an introductory web design course is already a blended environment. Students meet face-to-face, yet have access to a myriad of online resources, YouTube videos, blogs, and forums to support their learning. However, the challenges of learning to understand code can inhibit students and diminish their motivation to look for resources. The authors have attempted to address this issue by focusing on the use and design of games for learning to code, as well as providing video lecture material in combination with the traditional face-to-face learning environment. By using games and gamification in the course design, the authors have found …

Developing An Assessment Framework: Measuring Digital Literacy Of Interior Design Students In A Digital Drawing Course, Somang Yang
Theses and Dissertations
This exploratory study provides a foundation to measure students’ level of learning based on education theory for digital technology and meaningful technology theory for digital literacy. There has yet to exist an effective assessment tool that can evaluate students’ digital literacy. To provide initial insight into the digital technology integrated course development, Wacom pen-tablet and Autodesk Sketchbook were utilized to create an interior design curriculum for undergraduate college students. The findings of this study shed light on the necessity of assessing new technology for integration into coursework in higher education. There are five themes that an instructor must examine when …

Operating An Interior Design Firm In Saudi Arabia: Opportunities And Challenges For Professional Female Employees, Najah Alsaffaf
Operating An Interior Design Firm In Saudi Arabia: Opportunities And Challenges For Professional Female Employees, Najah Alsaffaf
Theses and Dissertations
Empowering women is the aim of the research. Saudi Arabia is the research location and interior design is the subject of the investigation. Saudi Arabia is on the path of empowering women through education and facilitating job opportunities. There is vast research about entrepreneurship and obstacles that women face in Saudi Arabia, but there is no evidence of research on the interior design field in Saudi Arabia in both education and job opportunities. Finding out that the art and design scene is thriving in education indicates that there would be a need for creating jobs and employment options for design …

Zuzu's Petals, Jeffrey James Jarot
Zuzu's Petals, Jeffrey James Jarot
Theses and Dissertations
Zuzu's Petals relates the travails of Jules and Julie, a couple whose marriage is in the process of breaking apart. Jules has a "fanboyish" obsession with the 1946 Frank Capra film "It's a Wonderful Life." Furthermore, he is fixated on his own past, and his eccentric behavior has caused his disenchanted wife to seek romantic and emotional solace in David, an old flame from high school. Their child, Zuzu, who was named at Jules' insistence after a key character in the Capra film, has herself sensed that something is amiss in her parents' dealings with each other. The story's narrative …

Punch-Drunk, Ian T. Carey
Punch-Drunk, Ian T. Carey
Theses and Dissertations
My work is an attempt to synthesize painting and drawing strategies that traditionally have been used to promote political dissent. I am influenced by many artists: Jean Du buffet, Leon Golub, Carroll Dunham, Jim Nutt and Karl Wirsum, whose work has informed my imagery and thinking in relationship to my artistic production. My thesis statement will define how I operate creatively and visually, and will seek to articulate a philosophy of my painting practice. I use different painterly vocabularies, manipulate figurative elements, discover through process, challenge standardized tastes, and use historic tropes to reveal a complex allegory. My paintings are …
