The Methodist Episcopal Church became the largest religious denomination in the United States during the 1820's. Local expressions of the national body were established in nearly every American community. Methodist expansion was largely a result of the activity of circuitriders. These itinerants traveled and proclaimed the gospel to citizens, many of whom joined the Church and became part of a religious movement which influenced the l development of culture in the United States.

This study is an examination of the contributions made by Captain Dan Jones, called the father of the Welsh Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a pioneer to the Great Basin. Jones was one of the all-time missionary greats, instrumental in converting over 5,000 Welsh people and their introduction into the Utah pioneer society. He operated a steamboat on the Mississippi for the Mormon Church and later a commercial boat on the Great Salt Lake for Brigham Young. Jones headed a steambot expedition in opposition to an attempted kidnapping of Joseph Smith in Illinois. The …

This thesis is the biography of Edward Partridge (1793-1840), the first bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As one of the first members of the Latter-day Saint faith, his life is a representation of the struggles, persecutions and sacrifices of early Mormon history. As a leader, he was the subject of many of the instructions and pronouncements of the Doctrine and Covenants, a volume of "revelations" cannonized by Mormondom. Throughout the history of the Mormon movement, certain members or groups of members, have exercised free agency in the form of dissent against the direction which the prophet of that church chose to lead his movement. The form of this dissent varied but the theme was usually quite consistant: a demand for moderation. For many of these dissenters the extremes of Mormon doctrine seemed to take them out of touch with prevailing American values.
