John Ford: A Concise Annotated Bibliography, Jeffrey L. Johnson Jun 1985

John Ford: A Concise Annotated Bibliography, Jeffrey L. Johnson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study fills the needs for an annotated bibliography in John Ford studies. Until now, no such project has been attempted. Because of the tremendous amount of material available by and about Ford, the scope of this project was limited to published works about Ford in English.

In compiling the bibliography, I used previously published bibliographies on Ford and the annual MLA Bibliography. In addition, I consistently checked the bibliographies of each work cited in my bibliography to obtain those items which eluded me elsewhere.

I personally surveyed the contents of every book, essay, and other documents in preparing the …

A Guide To William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" Or "What You Will", Deborah Morris

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

William Shakespeare's family came from the area surrounding Stratford-upon-Avon. William's father, John Shakespeare, was the son of a respectable farmer at Snitterfield, just a few short miles from Stratford. John arrived in Stratford with a moderate inheritance and set up business as a local merchant and landowner. He is described as being a wool dealer and a glover in Stratford. He purchased two houses; one in Green-hill Street and another in Henley Street.

In 1557, John married Mary Arden, daughter of a wealthy land owner, who brought with her an estate called "Ashbies" and an interest in two Snitterfield tenements. …

"Failed Love" In The Drama Of Edward Albee, Steven Leonard Long Jan 1985

"Failed Love" In The Drama Of Edward Albee, Steven Leonard Long

Masters Theses

The plays of Edward Albee are frequently examinations of characters who are unable to love or to be loved. A central and recurring conflict which runs through many of Albee's plays is the conflict which stems from the lack of success which the characters often experience as they strive to find love. The uncertainty and ambiguity which surround the abstraction called "love" leave the characters with feelings of unhappiness, frustration, fear, self-hatred, and despondency. Though the individuals in Albee's plays are aware that love is the ingredient which is missing from their lives, none knows how to go about alleviating …

Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A recent communication theory premise that individuals tend to arrange their thinking metaphorically is the focus of this study. Some communication scholars posit that humans actually think in metaphors. That is, individuals understand something by using one thing to stand for another. Humans communicate by comparing things they understand. Thus, we as humans actually arrange our thinking metaphorically and we understand things or interpret symbols by processing information through a system of metaphoric concepts.

This study attempts to extend metaphoric concept communication theory by examining the broadcast news segment of mass media. This study's general hypothesis is that if individuals …

Kiss Me Kate: The Costume Design Process And The Costuming Problems In The Small Costume Shop, Carlene N.(Niki) Juncker Jan 1985

Kiss Me Kate: The Costume Design Process And The Costuming Problems In The Small Costume Shop, Carlene N.(Niki) Juncker

Theses

In my process of choosing the culminating project for the MFA degree, I originally planned two such projects: a production's costumes in performance presentation and a draft for a tentatively titled "The Art and Craft of Costume Design." Shortly after this decision, the well known designer-costumers, Liz Covey and Rosemary Ingram, published The Costume Designer's Handbook. This book quite adequately covered the material I had planned to include in my projected volume. I then reconsidered my projects and eventually decided to combine my ideas into one two-fold project: a thesis covering all the problems of design and execution of the …
