María Grever: Influence Through Mexican Folk And Classical Romantic Techniques And Ideals In ‘A Una Ola.’, Alexandria C. Ellis Apr 2024

María Grever: Influence Through Mexican Folk And Classical Romantic Techniques And Ideals In ‘A Una Ola.’, Alexandria C. Ellis

ATU Research Symposium

In the last 25 years, there has been a resurgence in Latin American ethnomusicology. This means that, while interest continues to grow, there are several gaps, especially when it comes to the contributions of women. Interestingly, some of these gaps surround the popular Mexican composer María Grever. This includes the lack of information on the variety of sources she gathered inspiration from for composition. Through analyzing Grever's compositional style, especially in the bolero ‘A Una Ola,’or ‘To a Wave,’ I will examine the relationship that Grever employs between the classical Romantic approach and Latin American techniques, especially Mexican folk. While …

Florence Price: Forgotten No More, Kathryn E. Amdahl

2023 Symposium

Florence Price was a composer and musician who lived from 1887 to 1953. She composed music in every genre except for opera. The music of Florence Price traveled practically everywhere; from the radio to the concert halls to the church. Throughout her life, she became well-known as the first African American female composer who was featured by a major symphony. Florence Price was tenacious, brave, and courageous during her era which contributed to the level of acceptance that society now holds for African American composers. Despite the challenges she faced during her lifetime, she never gave up or collapsed due …

Weber's Clarinet Concertino Opus 26, Cadence A. Graves Apr 2023

Weber's Clarinet Concertino Opus 26, Cadence A. Graves

ATU Research Symposium

As a professional musician, it is important that one does not simply learn the notes and rhythms in a piece of music, but also the history surrounding it and its composer. There is much to learn about a piece of music and how it may be performed from original scores, performance history, and knowledge of the composer and the time period in which it was written. This lecture recital aims to open eyes to the amount of relevant knowledge one can gain from researching a piece of music’s composer, setting, and the importance of doing this research. This presentation will …

Theological Perspectives Of The Mass In B Minor, Bwv 232, Maria Jimena Picado Sandi Mar 2023

Theological Perspectives Of The Mass In B Minor, Bwv 232, Maria Jimena Picado Sandi

Graduate Student Research Symposium

In 1733, the great German Lutheran composer Johann Sebastian Bach presented the beginnings of what would become his only Catholic work, the Mass in B minor, to the newly elected King of Poland, August III. This first draft was a compilation of extracts from five different Lutheran Masses that he had already composed, including a Kyrie and a Gloria.

Over the years, musicologists have put forth various theories as to why such a devoted Lutheran such as Bach wrote a Catholic mass (e.g. Wolff 2001). My research clarifies how specific sections of the Mass express both Catholic and …

L'Homme Arme: A Tradition Of Contrafactum, Lauren Moseley Apr 2022

L'Homme Arme: A Tradition Of Contrafactum, Lauren Moseley

Student Scholar Showcase

Contrafactum, the replacement of text in a song, and L’homme Arme impacted music both in the 1450s and today. Although their usage changed and dwindled, musicians never stopped using contrafactum and L’homme Arme in their works. With the intent of improving music pedagogy and performance, the purpose of this research was to investigate L’homme Arme and contrafactum and their usage today. The particular problems of this study were to (1) examine contrafactum and L’homme Arme in medieval and renaissance music; (2) explore the use of contrafactum today; and (3) arrange a piece of music that combines a sacred and a …

Cognitive Insights And Implications Of Singing: Actions, Proprioception, And Perception In Vocal Performance., Juanita Leal Mar 2022

Cognitive Insights And Implications Of Singing: Actions, Proprioception, And Perception In Vocal Performance., Juanita Leal

Graduate Student Research Symposium

Studies in vocal performance have suggested the interdependence of cognitive reactions and performative proprioception. This interdependence indicates an introspective self-evaluation process during the act of musical performance. When affected by singers’ judgment of vocal production, self-evaluation and perceptive processes potentially change due to implicit competitive roles in the music performance environment.

In this project, I delve deeper into the ways the brain recognizes aspects of vocal sounds, how it reacts to the process of singing, and how it can identify them as its own In two different environments: the controlled practice space and the variable performance space. By reflecting on …

Creation Of The Database For The Don Wright Faculty Of Music's Opera Costume Collection, Ashley Carpenter Aug 2021

Creation Of The Database For The Don Wright Faculty Of Music's Opera Costume Collection, Ashley Carpenter

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Over the course of my USRI, I created a database to organize and display the costume collection from the Don Wright Faculty of Music Opera Program at Western University. This process consisted of a series of phases with a focus on digitizing the costume collection so that it is accessible and sustainable. Extraction, sorting, creation, development, photograph, organization, and consultation constituted the progression of the new costume database. The extraction phase featured the removal and assessment of the costumes. This provided a visualization of the costume collection in its entirety and thus, guided the creation of the database. The sorting …

Abstract

Roland’s MC 505 is a small portable music production instrument also known as agroovebox that functions as a programmable sixty-four note polyphonic synthesizer and drummachine with twenty-six interchangeable drum kits to use in various combinations. (1) The groovebox is equipped for both audio recording and live performance, both of which are analyzed in this research. The machine has many innovative elements that have carried over into modern music technology as well as some limitations that have since been left behind. This study acts as a historical evaluation of the growth and improvements …

Developing A Multimedia Interface For Electrical Biosignal Interpretation, Christopher Cox Apr 2021

Developing A Multimedia Interface For Electrical Biosignal Interpretation, Christopher Cox

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

In the last ten years, a great deal of interest has been generated around the practice of using plants’ electrical signals to create sound or music. In order to render biosignals capable of producing sound electronically, some kind of interface is necessary that converts a plant’s natural electrical signals into data that a computer can understand. Existing commercial interfaces cost at minimum $3001,2 . Worse yet, two popular off-the-shelf interfaces conform their output signals to stereotypical human notions of what a plant might “sound like”. In this project we fabricated a simple but high-performance interface for less than $5 in …

What Is "Around Me" In 2020?, Hannah Heaton Mar 2021

What Is "Around Me" In 2020?, Hannah Heaton

Undergraduate Research Conference

The title of my composition that I am using for this performance presentation is "Around Me." It is a solo violin work performed by Dr. Serena Scibelli, a music professor from the University of North Georgia, and composed by me, Hannah Heaton. Serena Scibelli requested if I could write a solo violin work for her upcoming album that would be a reminder of reflection through music during the 2020 Pandemic. I intend to take this work and show any listener how they can relate with my piece, “Around Me.”

"Around Me" is a relatively short work, but through use of …

Memorias | Electronic Literature + Live Coding Performance, Jessica A. Rodriguez Miss, Rolando Rodriguez, Alejandro Brianza, Luis M. Guzman Jul 2020

Memorias | Electronic Literature + Live Coding Performance, Jessica A. Rodriguez Miss, Rolando Rodriguez, Alejandro Brianza, Luis M. Guzman

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Memorias is a web-based artistic project by Jessica Rodríguez developed through the Estuary platform —an online platform to host live coding languages. It is based in six autobiographical writings connected to the way she “hears”, “writes”, “watches”, “reads”, “sees” and “listens” to the word. Through these texts, six code works were designed and programmed, hybridizing natural and computing languages by parsing three existing live coding languages: Tidal Cycles, Punctual, and CineCer0.

Together, Memorias’ languages collide different materialities as well as visual and sonic approaches, going from voices in English, Spanish, Cello and Paetzold samples, audio and visual synthesis, and pre-recorded …

Lulling Waters: A Poetry Reading For Real-Time Music Generation Through Emotion Mapping, Ashley Muniz, Toshihisa Tsuruoka

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Through a poetic narrative, “Lulling Waters” tells the story of a whale overcoming the loss of his mother, who passed away from ingesting plastic, as he attempts to escape from the polluted oceanic world. The live performance of this poem utilizes a software system called Soundwriter, which was developed with the goal of enriching the oral storytelling experience through music. This video demonstrates how Soundwriter’s real-time hybrid system was able to analyze “Lulling Waters” through its lexical and auditory features. Emotionally salient words were given ratings based on arousal, valence, and dominance while the emotionally charged prosodic features of the …

Productive Misreading In Intermedia Art: Four Approaches By A Musician, Jeff Morris, Elisabeth Blair Jul 2020

Productive Misreading In Intermedia Art: Four Approaches By A Musician, Jeff Morris, Elisabeth Blair

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

This discussion examines the evolution and lessons of four artistic performance works that engage with text and imagery with the mindset of a composer, rather than as an author or visual artist. The works involve computer music, improvisation, video art, generative art techniques, and challenging aesthetics. An analytical discussion reveals that different forms and mechanisms of reading are manifest in the artworks, and reflections upon these elucidate the intermedial nature of reading and the productive, expressive potential of interfering with these processes.

190— Punk Prayer: The History Of The Riot Grrrl Movement, Soleil Rivera, Hailey Martin, Quentin Wall

GREAT Day Posters

The “riot grrrl” movement was an underground subculture of music that began in Washington State (Particularly in Olympia) in the early 1990s. It consisted of all female bands that combined feminist values and politics in the form of punk music. It spread quickly across the nation, and the US, where it went on to influence the globe, and their society and politics, becoming a much more international movement. Here, we will be covering the foundations of the “riot grrrl” movement, list a few bands and their impacts on the nation, and the significance of the movement on aspects of society, …

Inclusive Ensembles: Differentiating For The Singer On The Autism Spectrum, Natalie Wilkins

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Exceptional children belong in music classrooms. Music ensemble directors need to overcome complex challenges to meet the goal of inclusion because ensembles often contain a mixture of ages, grades, social and intellectual development stages, musical skills, and a wide variety of diverse learning needs. This study focuses on how a choral ensemble director may create an inclusive environment for students on the Autism Spectrum.

This study reviewed current research on creating inclusive rehearsal environments. Analysis revealed varied methods for differentiation including modified/adapted scores that make use of color-coding, personalized parts, and symbolic notation; choral ensemble formats, such as self-contained choirs, …

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Art is such a huge and impactful part of society, it sparks creativity, joy, and wonder into the lives of everyone. Art is categorized into different groups: Performing, Visual, Music and writing. What if we combined these four to create a beautiful message and work of art? The four genres of art were brought together, to produce one cohesive work of art. With movement and music inspired by a photograph and a poem, the poetry was brought to life. This powerful piece will convey the story behind the poetry in visual manner.

Live Music In Musical Theatre, Kali Abrams May 2019

Live Music In Musical Theatre, Kali Abrams

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

My project is about live music in musical theatre, why we are slowly seeing less of it, and what we can do differently to bring them back on stage. Why this is important is because this takes away jobs from musicians who are orchestra players. This is also important because music has a big impact on a lot of people emotionally and there is a difference between hearing music that is prerecorded and music that is being performed live in front of an audience. I want to present my ideas on what changes we can make that can be beneficial …

How I Organized A Music Festival At Cwu: Networking, Budgets, Artistry, Peregrine Spane

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Through setting up a music festival at Central Washington University I observed a need for independent music in Ellensburg, closer gender parity in regard to event line-ups, and how in-depth research in policy, budgets, networking, and inclusion would make this possible. In this presentation I will be describing my vision, explaining logistics, and reflecting on lessons learned and where to go in the future.
