Religion On The Run, Peter Iver Kaufman
Religion On The Run, Peter Iver Kaufman
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
"At one time English religion had emphasized the static or the recurrent aspects of worship. Then for a century or more, England was conscious of acting a sacred history as opposed to reenacting it". Sommerville's observation should shock no one familiar with his "century or more," roughly 1530 to 1660, although the declared opposition between "acting" and "reenacting" is likely to strike those who still read Bale, Foxe, Dering, or Dell as rather forced. Yet, so many of the contrasts in Secularization are terribly suggestive, announcing that religion "was changing from devotion to deliberation".

Integrity And Integration In Ecclesiastical Historiography: The Perspective Of Mosheim And Neander, Paulo Buss
Integrity And Integration In Ecclesiastical Historiography: The Perspective Of Mosheim And Neander, Paulo Buss
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
This investigation attempts to apply the motif of integrity and integration in an examination of Lutheran ecclesiastical historiography. This is not a comprehensive survey involving all the significant Lutheran historians of the past but rather focuses on selected Lutheran historians of different centuries to determine possible tendencies in their views of integrity and integration. Although these terms themselves are not employed as such by the theologians/historians analyzed here, this study starts with the hypothesis that the concepts expressed by these terms are not unfamiliar to them.
In a study of Lutheran historiography the question about Luther's view of history deserves …

Blessings Of The Disappointment, P. Gerard Damsteegt
Blessings Of The Disappointment, P. Gerard Damsteegt
Faculty Publications
I believe the pioneers would point out that they experienced the great disappointment precisely because they did believe that Christ's ministry in the most holy place began at His ascension. The disappointment itself led them to the surprising discovery that this understanding was incorrect and was out of harmony with the broader context of the whole Bible.

Magnificent Disappointment is a popularly written book in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Great Disappointment of 1844 when the hopes of Adventists were dashed when Jesus did not return. C. Mervyn Maxwell, one of the finest Seventh-day Adventist historians, attempts to explain the meaning of 1844 and its relevancy for today.

Rebuilding The Broken Wall: The Efc And Canadian Evangelicals, Mark Denis Chapman
Rebuilding The Broken Wall: The Efc And Canadian Evangelicals, Mark Denis Chapman
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
An examination of a voluntary association of Canadian evangelicals, that is known as the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC), contributes to the growing body of knowledge concerning Canadian evangelicals. This thesis begins by indicating how the sociology of knowledge, voluntary association theory and network theory are relevant to the study of the EFC and of Canadian evangelicalism. It then discusses an alternate approach to defining evangelicals and briefly summarizes the history of Canadian evangelicals and of the EFC. Against this background the remainder of the thesis analyzes the nature of the EFC through an examination of five perceptions of the …

Native Theological Training Within Canadian Evangelicalism: Three Case Studies, Graham Gibson
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis explores the attitudes of EuroCanadian. Protestant evangelical Christians, towards Canada's aboriginal peoples, particularly as they pertain to the training of Native ministerial candidates. In addition to EuroCanadian perspectives, Native voices are included in this examination, specifically, the opinions and attitudes expressed by aboriginal individuals who either have had experience as Native candidates under the tutelage of non-Native teachers and administrators, or who have spent many years observing the effects of such training upon their youth and their churches. Chapter 1, a history of missionization in Canada, is a discussion of the historical context in which theological training institutions …
