An Issue Of Methodology: Anakreon, Perikles, Xanthippos, Brunilde S. Ridgway
An Issue Of Methodology: Anakreon, Perikles, Xanthippos, Brunilde S. Ridgway
Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Standard assumptions about the portrait of Anakreon known through works of the Roman period are here reviewed in light of all available evidence. Pausanias's mention of a statue of the Ionic poet on the Athenian Akropolis has led to extensive conjectures about Anakreon's relationship to Perikles' family and the message such a monument was meant to convey. The possibility is raised that the known portrait was created later than ca. 440, and, more specifically, that the full-body representation now in Copenhagen served the requirements.

James, Liz. Light And Color In Byzantine Art, Kathleen Maxwell
James, Liz. Light And Color In Byzantine Art, Kathleen Maxwell
Art and Art History
James' title coupled with the generous number of color illustrations in her text led me to assume that she would survey Byzantine art in more traditional terms of light and color. Instead, the book pursues the perceptual repercussions of color in Byzantine art and is based on James' dissertation, "Colour Perception in Byzantium" (University of London, 1989).

(First Paragraph) Planning has been a part of the American landscape since the establishment of the first colonial outposts, but it was not until the early twentieth century that the field's protagonists organized and professionalized. Also a relatively recent phenomenon is the field of American planning history, which for many years was the neglected stepchild of urban history and the distant cousin of architectural history. Over the past decade, however, a steady outpouring of interdisciplinary research has garnered for the field well-deserved recognition within the academy. At a time when more established disciplines are increasingly torn by ideological differences and …

Fragments Of An Early Thirteenth-Century St. Peter Window From The Cathedral Of Rouen, Michael Watt Cothren
Fragments Of An Early Thirteenth-Century St. Peter Window From The Cathedral Of Rouen, Michael Watt Cothren
Art & Art History Faculty Works
This article introduces three fragments from a stained-glass cycle of the life of St. Peter, once part of the nave aisle glazing of the cathedral of Rouen. Although the evidence they offer is diminished by their partial preservation, when these panels are associated with a previously recognized panel depicting St. Peter in the Glencairn Museum, a narrative cycle can be documented and firmer conclusions can be drawn concerning stylistic relationships among the "Belles Verrières" of the Rouen nave aisle. The examination of these fragments from technical and physical--as well as stylistic--standpoints confirms an assessment of the early thirteenth-century stained-glass workshop …

French Aesthetics: Contemporary Painting Theory, Gary Shapiro
French Aesthetics: Contemporary Painting Theory, Gary Shapiro
Philosophy Faculty Publications
One peculiar feature of the Anglo-American reception of French thought since about 1970 is the view that the variety of thinkers and tendencies involved reduces everything to language. One crucial place to test such a reading is with regard to a set of texts devoted to painting and the visual arts, for the latter would seem to be situated at or beyond the boundaries of language, a place that Julia Kristeva calls the semiotic. The alleged reductionism of the French is usually construed as the claim that language is a seamless whole in which all meanings are defined in terms …
The New Plastic In Sculpture, Timothy M. Gallant
The New Plastic In Sculpture, Timothy M. Gallant
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
In his "new plastic" paintings, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) created an aesthetic of universal dimensions through the unification of simplified visual elements. Through an intuitive process of trial and error, Mondrian achieved the unity required for his universal aesthetic by creating a delicate tension between simplified elements in simulated three dimensional space. Mondrian's "new plastic" (neoplastic) aesthetic in painting, however, is physically bound to the two dimensional surface of his canvas and allowed only the appearance of three dimensions. In my thesis, I outline the translation of Mondrian's aesthetic into a physically three dimensional context, creating a universal aesthetic in sculpture …
