Archaeological And Historical Investigations In Bastrop And Lee Counties, Texas, Thomas C. Kelly, Erwin Roemer, Jr.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This reconnaissance-level cultural resources survey of 1900 acres in northern Bastrop County, including a small area in Lee County, Texas, was accomplished by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, in July 1980. City Public Service (CPS) of San Antonio has proposed a lignite mining project in the area, and this represents the first attempt to determine the nature of the cultural resources and the problems they might present in developing the lignite deposits. Prehistoric resources in the primary area were scarce and of limited significance, but three sites on the west side of the …

A Reappraisal Of The Archaeological Resources Along The Proposed Lagrange Bypass, Alternate Route A, Fayette County, Texas, Wayne C. Young

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

For a number of years, a proposed bypass around the city of LaGrange in Fayette County, Texas, has been in various planning stages with the ultimate objective of diverting highway traffic from the downtown area. Four possible routes have been studied in recent years, and a decision has now been made to proceed with Route A, the closest route to the city along the city's northern boundary (Fig. 1).

The archaeology section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation has been involved in cultural resource surveys along each of the proposed corridors and has located prehistoric archaeological sites …

Archaeological Testing Of Six Sites Along U.S. Highway 56 El Paso County, Texas, John W. Clark Jr.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Six prehistoric sites along the proposed route of U.S. Highway 54 in El Paso County, Texas, were tested during the spring and summer of 1981. No further work is recommended at four of these sites due to the paucity of recovered materials and the general deflated and eroded nature of the sites.

Two sites are recommended for further work. Testing of Site 41EP321 produced two probable pithouse features with buried charcoal lenses and possible post holes as well as numerous varied artifacts including Mimbres Black-on-White, Chupardero Black-on-White, El Paso Brown, and El Paso Polychrome pottery types. Testing of Site 41EP289 …

Historical Archaeological Resources Of The Choke Canyon Reservoir Area In Mcmullen And Live Oak Counties, Texas, Philip A. Bandy

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

During previous surveys of the Choke Canyon Reservoir area in Live Oak and McMullen Counties, Texas, 17 historic sites (structures, refuse areas, cemeteries) had been located and examined. Further work in this area is described in this report and is summarized as follows: Most of the above sites and 5 newly located ones underwent surface collection and 'test excavation. Sites were recorded and the collected artifacts described and classified. Suggested chronology and occupation are correlated with the findings of the historical research study (Everett, Part I of this report). Evidence indicates that the area was most intensively occupied during the …

During the 1977 survey, 113 archaeological sites, 42 low density artifact scatters, and five isolated finds were located and recorded. A no-collection policy was maintained, except isolated finds. In the late fall 1977, 15 of the recorded sites were subjected …

Archaeological Testing Of Sites 41mk28 And 41mk29 Mcculloch County, Texas, Wayne C. Young

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Two sites in McCulloch County, Texas, Sites 41MK28 and 41MK29, were tested in August, 1981, and were found to have very shallow of surface deposits. Site 41MK28 proved to be a badly eroded surface site. That portion of Site 41MK29 which lay in the proposed right-of-way was found to be already destroyed by previous root plowing and fire lane construction activities. Further excavation is not recommended at either site because of the disturbed nature of the sites and the lack of depth to the deposits.

Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico: A Guide To The Town And Missions, Jack D. Eaton

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This guide to the town and missions at Guerrero, Coahuila, is based largely upon the research efforts of the Gateway Project, an archaeological and ethnohistoric study of the area conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio during 1975 to 1977. Because the project was dealing with historic mission buildings which housed native American inhabitants of the region, the project had both historic and prehistoric aspects. The Indians gathered into the missions where inheritors of the native cultural tradition began at least 11,000 years ago. Therefore, an archaeological survey of prehistoric sites in the …

Archeological Investigations At The Laredo Cemetery Site (41wb22), Webb County, Texas, Mary Jane Mcreynolds, Laverne Herrington, Ken Rodgers Jan 1981

Archeological Investigations At The Laredo Cemetery Site (41wb22), Webb County, Texas, Mary Jane Mcreynolds, Laverne Herrington, Ken Rodgers

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archeological involvement in the exhumation of relatively recent historic cemeteries is a new development in Texas. Traditionally, archeologists have directed their attention toward the burial practices of aboriginal peoples and have shied away from any dealings with the excavations of late nineteenth and early twentieth century cemeteries. This trend has continued despite an ever-increasing awareness of and concern with changing modes of historic and recent tombstone embellishment on the part of archeologists, cultural anthropologists and historians. In practice, tombstones have been studied sporadically but the tasks of relocation and reinterment of the physical human remains have been left to undertakers …

Homosexuality In Art, Julian P. Wade-Salisbury Jan 1981

Homosexuality In Art, Julian P. Wade-Salisbury

Masters Theses

Homosexuality in art is nothing new. It has existed for centuries. This paper traces, via relative examples, homosexual themes in art from the ancient Greek vases to the twentieth century. The paper is divided into four sections: Greek Homosexuality, Christian Traditions, 19th and 20th Century Art, and My Work and that of other Artists. Examples from these chapters have been taken and are discussed, with special reference to the titles.

In chapter one there is an emphasis on homosexual imagery found on ancient Greek pots, and the almost relaxed way in which the Greeks portrayed and lived with homosexuality. They …
