Land Tenure In Acadian Agricultural Settlements, 1604-1755: Cultural Retention And The Emergence Of Custom, Carol A. Blasi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Starting in 1755, the British began the process of not only expelling some eleven thousand Acadians from their homes and farms, but also of uprooting a culture that had survived for over one hundred and twenty years. This dissertation applies a legal historical approach to elucidate a crucial feature of that culture, namely Acadian land tenure. In particular, it traces the way in which seigneurialism, and the French law supporting it, were central to property formation in Acadian agricultural settlements from their inception to their destruction in 1755.

Scholars have been at best ambivalent, and at worst hostile to the …

The Llano Grande Grant: The Transformation Of Land Ownership In The Rio Grande Valley, 1749-1910, Maria G. Vallejo

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The history of the Llano Grande is an important part of Rio Grande Valley life. The thesis presented will analyze the legal ownership of a single land grant from 1749-1910. The modern land tenure in the Rio Grande Valley has its roots in the Spanish land grants. By studying a micro-history of a single land grant we can understand how the land ownership of the Llano Grande and the Rio Grande Valley changed throughout an entire century. The land ownership of the Llano Grande addresses how land was transferred Spanish to Mexican and to Anglo land owners. Also, the rise …

The Irish Land Question 1848-1870, Sara A. Coski

History Theses & Dissertations

This is a study of the Irish Land Question and the evolution of British policy aimed at solving it. In 1848 Parliament proposed legislation strictly in keeping with current ideas of laissez-faire, yet by 1870 they passed an act which totally reversed this policy.

This change in British policy was due to the combination of two forces. First the progressive ideas of Liberal Prime Minister, William E. Gladstone, and second, the violent Fenian atrocities that made the British more receptive to radical ideas. The Irish Land Act of 1870 represented a turning point in British policy toward Ireland as …
