From The National Context To Its Margins: When The World Used Literature To Respond To The Great War, Toby Garfitt, Nicolas Bianchi
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
By shedding light on some original responses to the Great War that are today hardly known, and by asking the same questions of many works written in contexts which were radically different, this STTCL special issue advocates for a genuinely comparative approach to this literature. Born in a context of nationalist withdrawal, these cultural objects also had a paradoxically wide circulation (due to early translations, commentaries, literary reactions, and so on), which is why study of these apparently isolated writers is so valuable.
Adorable Clio: The Prose Poetry Of Jean Giraudoux: Writing Against Realism, Flavie Fouchard
Adorable Clio: The Prose Poetry Of Jean Giraudoux: Writing Against Realism, Flavie Fouchard
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This paper considers the particularities of Jean Giraudoux’s war writings Adorable Clio in the context of French Literature of the Great War. We focus on Giraudoux’s career previous to the conflict and on his prose poetic style in the recollection to study his refusal of realistic novel techniques despite the fact they were mainly used by other contemporary soldiers-writers who wanted to testify. Thanks to previous research on Giraudoux’s war writings and descriptions of his war experience, we proceed to a close reading of the text to highlight that, far from his reputation of superficiality, Giraudoux does not write only …

Regretful Ruminations: Jacques Rivière’S L’Allemand: Souvenirs Et Réflexions D'Un Prisonnier De Guerre, Arabella L. Hobbs
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This article examines Jacques Rivière’s post-war work L’Allemand: Souvenirs et réflexions d'un prisonnier de guerre (1918) ‘On German nature: memories and reflections of a prisoner-of-war,’ as a response to the conflicting nexus of Catholicism and French nationalism in the aftermath of the First World War. A damning account of the German race, L’Allemand exposes Rivière’s tussle with his wartime and post-war identities, most strikingly exhibited in his moral distancing from the text he was to eventually publish. In resuscitating Riviere’s now forgotten text, this article engages with the post-war reception of a work whose peculiar context bears witness to …

Canadians In The Manichean Universe Of War: The Novels Of Ralph Connor, Anna Branach-Kallas
Canadians In The Manichean Universe Of War: The Novels Of Ralph Connor, Anna Branach-Kallas
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
The purpose of my article is an analysis of two war novels by Canadian best-selling author Charles W. Gordon, known to his readers under the pseudonym of Ralph Connor (1830-1937): The Major (1917) and The Sky Pilot in No Man’s Land (1919). At the age of fifty-four, Connor was sent to the front as a preacher; only a fourth of his battalion survived, which made his determined to support the cause of the Empire in North America. His sentimental romances were written to support the war effort (The Major) or consolidate the myth of Canada’s valorous sacrifice in …
French Theater And The Memory Of The Great War, Susan Mccready
French Theater And The Memory Of The Great War, Susan Mccready
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
A systematic examination of the ground on which French-language playwrights chose to stage their confrontation with the war would expose many of the literary and cultural biases on which our collective memory of the Great War is based. Even the brief outline of French-language war plays provided in this essay challenges many of our most cherished assumptions about war experience and the meaning of the Great War.

Soldier-Poet Or Écrivain-Combattant: How The French Trenches Of World War I Defined Witnessing, Nichole T. Gleisner
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This paper explores how the French trenches of WWI defined the act of witnessing. An examination of Third Republic grammar textbooks by Claude Augé shows how soldiers were predisposed to be receptive to trench newspapers' exhortations to become witnesses to the war experience. An analysis of these pedagogic reforms, paired with a close reading of trench newspapers, show why the broader term écrivain-combattant emerged in France, as opposed to soldier-poet in the British literary context.
Marcelle Capy And The Pacifist Female Voices Amidst The Conflict, Cecilia Benaglia
Marcelle Capy And The Pacifist Female Voices Amidst The Conflict, Cecilia Benaglia
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This article analyses the writings of French writer and journalist Marcelle Capy (1891–1962), who held an uncommon position in the French intellectual field throughout the First World War. Going against the mainstream French feminist groups, who all prioritized loyalty to the fatherland over pacifism, Capy remained faithful to her socialist and anti-war creed. Although little known to the larger French public, Capy’s double marginality as a woman and as a pacifist makes her work a singular testimony of the war years as well as a significant example of the rejection of the national climate and Union sacrée’s rhetoric. In …

The Littérature Mineure Of François Bon, Helena Chadderton
The Littérature Mineure Of François Bon, Helena Chadderton
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This article shows how the work of contemporary author François Bon can be read as an example of Deleuze and Guattari’s littérature mineure. Bon’s work stands out on the French literary scene for its capacity to be political in both its content and its use of form. Furthermore, Bon brings form and content together by demonstrating the impact of language and textual features on the perception of social division. Focussing on characteristic features of Bon’s style pertaining to genre, syntax and rhythm, I propose that the relationship between reality and text in Bon’s work is one of mutual effect and …
