Images Of Migration And Change In The German-Language Poetry Of Galsan Tschinag, Richard Hacken Dec 2004

Images Of Migration And Change In The German-Language Poetry Of Galsan Tschinag, Richard Hacken

Faculty Publications

Presented March 25, 2004, at the European presentation for Migrations in Society, Culture, and the Library held in Paris. Migration in the works of Galsan Tschinag could be discussed on a number of levels. The first is an actual geographic migration documented in the published diaries of Tschinag. The next level of migration could be a linguistic migration of ideas and words from Tschinag's native Tuvan language which has no written script sometimes to Mongolian, but most often to German. The main focus is on the diverse images of migration in his German-language poetry, often illustrating transmigration of spirits between …

The Bayeux Tapestry: Norman And English Perspectives Intertwined, Maria Dajcar Dec 2004

The Bayeux Tapestry: Norman And English Perspectives Intertwined, Maria Dajcar

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to examine the Bayeux Tapestry, commissioned by the victorious Normans after the Norman Conquest of 1066, in order to determine which, if any, of its scenes bore English influence. The primary sources analyzed were, among others, Ordericus Vitalis, William of Poitiers, William of Jumieges, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and the Bayeux Tapestry itself. The secondary sources included monographs by David J. Bernstein, Wolfgang Grape, Frank Stenton, and Ian Walker.

While the majority of the Tapestry scenes adhere to the interpretation of the Conquest that was popularized by Norman chroniclers, several elements, such as the …

Castles In The Crusader Kingdom Of Valencia, 1257-1276, Marius Nielsen Dec 2004

Castles In The Crusader Kingdom Of Valencia, 1257-1276, Marius Nielsen

Masters Theses

For my thesis I proposed to study the registered charters of James I (1208-1276), King of Aragon, to examine how castles were distributed and utilized in the Crusader Kingdom of Valencia for the period 1257-1276. A little over two thousand register charters were issued for Valencia during this period. Around 250 of the two thousand charters mention castles indicating the importance of castles in the administration of the Crusader Kingdom of Valencia. Although there are many works on Western European castles the majority focus on castles in France, Britain and the Crusader States in the Middle East and rely on …

Introduction: The Swiss Protestant Reformation Nov 2004

Introduction: The Swiss Protestant Reformation

Swiss American Historical Society Review

On November 28th , 2002 the innocent family Lieu awoke to begin another day of prayer, devotion and work in their hometown of Danane in the Ivory Coast, West Africa. However, at 9 AM gunfire erupted and rebel forces began dropping bombs on the town, announcing that the current civil war in the Ivory Coast had reached Danane, terrifying the citizens and traumatizing the Lieu family to such an extent that they and many of their neighbors resolved to flee, with literally just the shirts on their backs, into the jungle. For months they lived like animals in the wilderness …

A Review Of Eric Till's Film Luther, Edmund J. Campion Nov 2004

A Review Of Eric Till's Film Luther, Edmund J. Campion

Swiss American Historical Society Review

This is a very curious movie about the great German reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546) that pleased neither Protestants nor Catholics. This is not to say that this film by the prolific director Eric Till is without value. The quality of the cinematography is extraordinary. The outside scenes were filmed in well-preserved late medieval churches, monasteries, and castles and this enables viewers to learn about early modem architecture in central Europe. Many scenes were actually filmed in the Czech Republic perhaps because production costs are significantly more expensive in Germany than in the Czech Republic. The major reason for seeing this …

Early Modern Jewries, Emw 2004

Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History

The 2004 workshop’s goal was to look broadly at the early modern period, and develop a number of themes that might be pursued at subsequent workshops. At the workshop, a number of scholars worked together for three days trying to define the parameters of this chronological period in Jewish history. Participants have covered a broad, if still necessarily limited, range of geographic, thematic, and disciplinary topics, resulting in the first collection of impressive texts on early modern Jewish history. They include privileges granted by monarchs and lords to Jews (privileges granted to Jews of Great Poland in 1453, to a …

Patriarch Nikon's Image In Russian History And Culture, Kevin Kain Aug 2004

Patriarch Nikon's Image In Russian History And Culture, Kevin Kain

Dissertations

This dissertation investigates representations of Nikon, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia (1652-1666). I contend that Nikon's resonance in Russian national life remains largely unrecognized because traditional histories--based entirely on written sources and limited to Nikon's tenure as Patriarch--fail to reveal his broader significance in Russian artistic, political and religious culture by omitting analysis of art and material culture. This dissertation advances the study of Patriarch Nikon by assessing his image in Russian history and culture from the mid-seventeenth century forward. I demonstrate that contrary to his overwhelmingly negative image in standard histories, the Patriarch held a central place in …

This special issue is devoted to nineteenth century Swiss of Ohio, and it also commemorates the work of Dr. Adelrich Steinach who published in 1889 the book Geschichte und Leben der Schweizer Kolonien in den Vereinigten Staaten von Nord-Amerika.
