The significance of the historical superscriptions (h/ss) that refer to David’s life (Pss 3, 7, 18, 34, 51, 52, 54, 56, 57, 59, 60, 63, 142) has been a matter of interest over the past century of Psalm Studies. An investigation into the structural and theological role1 of the thirteen Davidic h/ss and their psalms in the Psalter, as well as the role of David expressed in them reveals the nature of their origin, authorship, structural function, and theological import. Adventist Eschatological Identity And The Interpretations Of The Time Periods Of Daniel 12:11-12, Abner F. Hernandez

In recent years some Seventh-day Adventist scholars began applying the time periods in Dan 12:5-13 to the future. Rejecting the traditional historicist Adventist understanding that places the three and a half times, the 1290 and 1335 days, as prophetic periods already fulfilled in the past, they claim that these time periods should be understood as literal days still to come. Likewise, some Adventist scholars interpret the time periods of Dan 12 as merely a literary device that seems to suggest an apparent “delay” of the time of the end. Recent generations of young adults are experiencing a new life course stage: emerging adulthood. During this ‘new’ stage of the life course, traditional social bonds and turning points may not be present, may be delayed, or may not operate in the same manner as they have for prior generations. One such bond, religion, is examined here. Focusing on the United States, emerging adulthood is investigated as a distinct stage of the life course. This study examines the integrated network of parallels and reversals embedded in the context of John 10:40–13:33. Pierre Mourlon-Beernaert first noticed in 1981 the parallel and orderly movements of John 11 and 12. Analysis here will show that many of the parallel features in John 11–12 extend also into the Last Supper of John 13, especially those that link through the Anointing of 12:1-11. The Raising of Lazarus, the Anointing and Triumphal Entry, and the Last Supper texts comprise a three-fold core around which artist John has designed a grand literary triptych. Modern historical biblical criticism, while having many strengths, often operates under the pretensions of objectivity, as if such scholarship were neutral and disinterested. Examining the history and roots of modern biblical scholarship shows that such objectivity is elusive, and was never intended by the method’s earliest practitioners. The French Catholic priest and biblical scholar Alfred Loisy (1857-1940) was at the heart of the Roman Catholic Modernist crisis in the early part of the twentieth century. He saw much of his work as an attempt to bring John Henry Newman's notion of development of doctrine into the realm of Catholic biblical studies, and thereby transform Catholic theology. This volume situates Loisy's better known works on the New Testament and theology in the context of his lesser known work in Assyriology and Old Testament studies. This Excel table provides a convenient tool for searching for acronyms (horizontal acrostics) in the Tanakh. It  contains a verse-by-verse compilation of orthographic word counts, consonantal letter counts, first letters of each Hebrew word in traditional right-to-left sequence, and last letters of each Hebrew word in left-to-right sequence. Each verse-record is tagged by book name and chapter/verse reference, and each column-field may be searched and manipulated with Excel Auto-Filter. The characters in the Hebrew letter fields are separated by spaces, and searches may be done using Hebrew Unicode consonants. For example, a search for a Tetragrammaton acronym may be done …

The marriage of archaeological referencing and picture Bibles in the nineteenth century resulted in an astonishing variety of guises worn by the court of Ahasuerus in Esther. Following the exhibition of Neo-Assyrian sculpture in the British Museum and the wide circulation of such images in various John Murray publications, British illustrators like Henry Anelay defaulted to Assyrian models for kings and rulers in the Old Testament, including the principal actors in Esther, even though authentic Achaemenid Persian art had been available for illustrative pastiche for decades. This is a pre-peer-review revision of the paper I presented at the March 2018 Annual Meeting of the Eastern Great Lakes Biblical Society (SBL) in Akron, Ohio, which has been submitted for publication. 

Here I examine the name and role of the poor man in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. Evidence developed from an intertextual reading of the parable through the lens of Septuagint Genesis and Job reveals the character of Lazarus to be a seamless weave of suffering Job and Eliezer the Servant of rich man Abraham.
