Processes Translated. From Design To Research, Fabio Capra-Ribeiro

Faculty Publications

The architect commonly looks at the products of his work, he acts and experiments upon them, while the processes that allowed him to reach those results usually do not get much attention. Thus, this discussion seeks to focus on the procedures to schedule its development and act with greater awareness to ultimately improve them. Research builds a platform for the exercise of a discipline based on self-criticism, interpretation and the cyclic path, on a qualitative methodological framework that allows addressing research from the expertise that architects naturally develop through training and practice. Apart from how far or near research and …

The Contribution To And Affect Of Design And Architecture On Health & Activity Promotion (H&Ap) In The Workplace, Krystal L. Schumacher Dec 2013

The Contribution To And Affect Of Design And Architecture On Health & Activity Promotion (H&Ap) In The Workplace, Krystal L. Schumacher

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Expanding the research and awareness on the contribution to and affect of design and architecture on health and activity promotion in the workplace (h&ap) is essential in moving forward in the design of working environments. As humans, we spend the majority of our time indoors, for an average American adult he or she spends the majority of the day in a working environment. The impact that our spaces have is much deeper than the aesthetic. Our environments can depict how we act, feel and operate based on the design of our surroundings. Through this research, the goal was to study …

The Mayaarch3d Project: A 3d Webgis For Analyzing Ancient Architecture And Landscapes, Jennifer Von Schwerin, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Fabio Remondino, Giorgio Agugario, Gabrio Girardi Sep 2013

The Mayaarch3d Project: A 3d Webgis For Analyzing Ancient Architecture And Landscapes, Jennifer Von Schwerin, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Fabio Remondino, Giorgio Agugario, Gabrio Girardi

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

There is a need in the humanities for a 3D WebGIS with analytical tools that allow researchers to analyze 3D models linked to spatially referenced data. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow for complex spatial analysis of 2.5D data. For example, they offer bird’s eye views of landscapes with extruded building footprints, but one cannot ‘get on the ground’ and interact with true 3D models from a pedestrian perspective. Meanwhile, 3D models and virtual environments visualize data in 3D space, but analytical tools are simple rotation or lighting effects. The MayaArch3D Project is developing a 3D WebGIS—called QueryArch3D—to allow these two …

Predicting Building Energy Performance: Leveraging Bim Content For Energy Efficient Buildings, Eddie Villanueva Aquino Sep 2013

Predicting Building Energy Performance: Leveraging Bim Content For Energy Efficient Buildings, Eddie Villanueva Aquino

Master's Theses

Reducing and managing the environmental impacts of building structures has become a priority of building stakeholders and within the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) community; although, conflicting approaches and methods to combat the issues are present. For example, green building standards are widespread throughout the world; however each one has its own characteristics and consequently its own specific requirements. While all have proven to be effective rating systems and have similar requirements, the distinguishing characteristic that separates them is their treatment of performance and prescriptive metrics. The feature they all severely lack or currently limit is the inclusion of strict …

Interactions Between The Urban Environment And “The Homelessness”: Observations And Responses, Jeffrey Charles Stahl Aug 2013

Interactions Between The Urban Environment And “The Homelessness”: Observations And Responses, Jeffrey Charles Stahl

Masters Theses

Homelessness and people living on the streets is a phenomenon that is facing every major urban center in the United States. These people are a commonality in the urban landscape and are often seen a problem to be fi xed. Due to the interactions between the urban environment and persons experiencing homelessness, there needs to be a paradigm shift in how policy is written and how we design an intervention for these forgotten people. The goal of this thesis is to gain a clearer understanding to what it is like to survive on the streets: how dose someone fi nd …

Play In Place: The Role Of Site-Specific Playgrounds In Community Space, Allison Nkwocha May 2013

Play In Place: The Role Of Site-Specific Playgrounds In Community Space, Allison Nkwocha

Scripps Senior Theses

Playgrounds do not have to be static sites, but safety standards should not be the only force that guides their evolution over time. Just as the ongoing transformation of any city is a product of many interwoven factors, the collection of smaller sites that delineates one city from another should reflect the same holistic influences. This is not an argument for the abandonment of the safety standards that influence playground design. Instead, it is an argument for the adoption of and stronger adherence to community standards that influence city design. This paper argues that a park area (and more generally, …

Aging In Urbanity, Brantley Farron Bass May 2013

Aging In Urbanity, Brantley Farron Bass

Masters Theses

As the number of Americans over the age of fifty continues to rise, there are growing concerns over the quality of health care facilities and their availability and affordability. There are those who prefer the idea of growing older in a sprawling, suburban landscape, surrounded by nature, and history has proven this to be a normative response to retirement living. Yet, there could be other ways of introducing this type of living in a more accessible, lively and urban environment. There are many different options of living for younger generations and families, so the potential for providing similar options for …

Architecture As Pedagogy: Designing Sustainable Schools As Three-Dimensional Textbooks, Ester Ehrlich Schwartz May 2013

Architecture As Pedagogy: Designing Sustainable Schools As Three-Dimensional Textbooks, Ester Ehrlich Schwartz

Masters Theses

The importance of school buildings has been recognized as a fundamental element of modern society. Today, roughly a quarter of America’s population, including our youngest citizens, spend the majority of their days in school buildings. Still, many of our nation’s schools are in disrepair, with systems in need of repair or replacement.

Over the years, strong evidence and research have shown that school building impact student’s health and their ability to learn. Green schools mean healthier environments for students and staff. Pragmatically, we also know that that green schools save money. Energy-efficient buildings help reduce energy costs, which in turn …

Post-Industrial New England: Repairing The Voids, Jaime Ryznic Apr 2013

Post-Industrial New England: Repairing The Voids, Jaime Ryznic

Jaime Ryznic

Decaying urban spaces are common in post-industrial New England. When manufacturing activities withdrew from New England they left holes in the urban fabric. Physical absence of these former economic drivers is easy to note in empty mill buildings, warehouses, and storefronts. Farther reaching impacts of this exodus are less apparent. Jobs went with manufacturing. Raw materials needed to be harvested and made available to manufacturers; the finished products needed to be distributed, sold, and moved; supporting businesses provided for these needs. Many other groups supported manufacturing; some through the management of the companies, some catered to workers’ needs, or the …

Barriers To Health Care For People With Disabilities And Practice Administrators’ Knowledge Of The Ada: Nevada Compared With The Nation, Jennifer Pharr, Michelle Chino

Interdisciplinary Research Scholarship Day

The purpose of this study was to determine if the number of barriers reported in the clinics could be predicted by characteristics of the administrators or
characteristics of the practice. To increase accessibility to health care, interventions should focus on practices located in buildings built before 1993, practices with administrators who are younger and have limited experience as administrators, administrators with low levels of ADA knowledge and practices with smaller number of patients.

The Window Unit: Low-Tech Animal Husbandry In The High-Rise, Carey Clouse, Zachary Lamb

Carey Clouse

Like humans, animals have also witnessed a steady shrinking of their territory, space, or landscape of inhabitation. The Window Unit creates individualized animal habitats that take advantage of the human environment in a way that allows for a mutualistic relationship. Chickens, bees, and fish gain a useful and previously uninhabitable space in the air, their living quarters curiously fastened to a window ledge via a simple and solid steel armature.

Mythological Links To Shinto Architecture, Grace B. Djokoto Feb 2013

Mythological Links To Shinto Architecture, Grace B. Djokoto

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

The practice of shrine worship has been present in Japan for centuries. The construction of shrines emanated from the belief that the kami, or spirits, needed a dwelling place. The many elements of the shrine have a connection to an aspect of the Shinto mythology. This investigation examines the major elements of a Shinto shrine and the mythological significance of each.

Of Dirt And Decomposition: Proposing A Place For The Urban Dead, Katrina M. Spade Jan 2013

Of Dirt And Decomposition: Proposing A Place For The Urban Dead, Katrina M. Spade

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

The intent of this thesis is to challenge our society’s existing options for the care and processing of the deceased, and to design a space and a ritual which are both deeply meaningful and ecologically beneficial. The community for whom this architecture is designed currently lacks the religious or cultural rituals which would otherwise guide them through the process of laying of their loved ones to rest. For this community, both traditional burial and cremation are devoid of meaning and culturally irrelevant ways of dealing with the deceased, in addition to being unnecessarily wasteful processes. Likewise, the community for which …

Interactive Music Experience, Gaetan Jacques Jan 2013

Interactive Music Experience, Gaetan Jacques

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

In February of 2012, alternative rock band OK Go released a music video for their song “Needing/Getting”. The video explores a creative way of playing music, by driving a car through a constructed, choreographed environment. A driving track was set up as a large musical instrument which was “played” by a car. Architects, musicians, and artist are looking for innovative ways to develop active relationships between people, music, and architecture. The traditional passive relationship of these three is static, a design that does not promote interaction or participation. If we consider, behind a performance, there is a great deal of …

A Place Of Dwelling For Graduate Students, Garth H. Schwellenbach Jan 2013

A Place Of Dwelling For Graduate Students, Garth H. Schwellenbach

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

The lives of graduate students are often insular and focused, with high workloads and resultant stresses. Beyond the unifying demands of academia, graduate students have a diverse set of individual challenges. Some students have families, some are visiting the US and learning to live in a new culture, and some are fresh out of undergraduate studies and living on their own for the first time. In addition to these challenges the graduate student body is a diverse and disparate group, representing varied cultures, experiences and generations. Due to these demands and circumstances the students have little time and energy to …

Sen No Rikyū And The Japanese Way Of Tea: Ethics And Aesthetics Of The Everyday, Rumiko Handa Jan 2013

Sen No Rikyū And The Japanese Way Of Tea: Ethics And Aesthetics Of The Everyday, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Sen no Rikyū (1522-1591) was a tea master who consecutively served Japan’s two warlords in the turbulent feudal era. Rikyū synthesized wabi tea into ethics and aesthetics by applying it to every aspect of the ceremony, from the tea setting to the physical environment, and from the manner of making and drinking tea to the way of interacting with the environment. By producing artifacts and environments that clearly showcased the incomplete, imperfect, and impermanent nature of their physical aspects, Rikyū succeeded in guiding tea participants to the ontological contemplation of their own imperfect and transient existence. Henri Lefebvre (1901- 1991) …

Drawing As Architecture: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew J. Arkell Jan 2013

Drawing As Architecture: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew J. Arkell

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This project was motivated by the premise that a drawing could take on architectural meaning beyond its initial performance as a re-presentation of an architectural idea; in other words, the motivation was to create a drawing that was architecture. When the drawing is the research, however, the conclusions found are necessarily different from the earliest goals pursued. There comes an understanding that a drawing may never be literal architecture; although, the means by which the drawing is created might be architectural or, at the very least, speak to ideals which are fundamental to the creation, to the process, of architecture.

Researching Architectural Salvage Through Experiential Education, Carey Clouse Jan 2013

Researching Architectural Salvage Through Experiential Education, Carey Clouse

Carey Clouse

In the streets of post-Katrina New Orleans, it was trash heaps, rather than signage, that offered the promise of a homeowner’s return. Street-side mountains of soggy sheetrock, worn-out flooring and old windows provided a visual testament of rebuilding efforts inside; these piles of architectural debris framing gutted houses on almost every block. Such material waste regularly accompanies standard construction practices, where the yardstick of progress measures the number of dumpsters filled, and transformation implies resource depletion. This perverse line of thinking was called into question by one team of architecture students at Tulane University, who in the midst of the …
