Predictive Modeling With The Soil And Water Assessment Tool (Swat2012) Prior To Design Development In Landscape Architecture: Learning From The Southwestern Medical District In Dallas, Texas, Layal Bitar Ghanem

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Landscape Architecture has recently seen a significant rise in evaluative studies among the scientific and professional community, perhaps as a result of growing concerns related to rapid urbanization, climate change, and environmental degradation (LAF, 2016; Ozdil, 2014). Several methods adopted in evaluative landscape architecture research have typically focused on landscape performance in post implementation conditions, with a relatively superficial use of technology to address contemporary urban problems. However, with the advancement of computer technologies, opportunities to assess and predict environmental landscape performance prior to design development in the site planning process have emerged. The purpose of this research is to …

The Impact Of Projected Climate Change On Bioswales In North Texas, Joann Paris Leavell Dec 2016

The Impact Of Projected Climate Change On Bioswales In North Texas, Joann Paris Leavell

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

This research addresses how bioswales are affected by the projections for climate change in the North Texas region. Bioswales are a type of green infrastructure that conveys stormwater before directing it to a storm sewer system or other flood control structure (McLaughlin, 2016). They minimize the volume of stormwater runoff from the ground level and allow for the infiltration and remediation of pollutants while reducing the amount of water that is directed towards storm sewers. The research seeks to provide an understanding of how the efficacy of bioswales is related to the projected climatic conditions in North Texas and their …

Assessing Residents' Perceptions Of Waterfront Landscapes In Las Colinas Urban Center, Irving, Texas, Xiaolu Ma May 2016

Assessing Residents' Perceptions Of Waterfront Landscapes In Las Colinas Urban Center, Irving, Texas, Xiaolu Ma

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

The purpose of this study is to assess the residents’ perceptions of the waterfront landscapes in man-made environments, specifically in the Las Colinas Urban Center, Irving, Texas. From in-depth interviews and passive observations, this research identifies and reviews the specific landscape design characteristics of waterfront landscapes that influence people’s decisions to live near water. These specific landscape design characteristics are categorized into three dimensions: elements and features, water characteristics, and accessibility. Understanding how these three dimensions influence intention to live in close proximity to a waterfront landscape are used to provide recommendations for the future design of waterfront development. Most …

Health Impacts Of Parks And Trail Systems, Lessons Learned From The Overton Park System Fort Worth, Texas, Jacob Schwarz May 2016

Health Impacts Of Parks And Trail Systems, Lessons Learned From The Overton Park System Fort Worth, Texas, Jacob Schwarz

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

This thesis explores the health impacts of parks and trail systems on residents by studying the Overton Park System in Fort Worth, Texas. Specifically, this research assesses how park features, amenities, and experiences impact physical activity levels of residents who live nearby. The Overton Park System, as defined in this study, consists of Overton Park, Foster Park, and the trail system that connects them to the Trinity Trail System. Numerous studies have shown the health benefits of daily physical activity over a sedentary lifestyle (Lewis and Hennekens, 2016). Literature illustrates that parks and trail systems offer an array of amenities …

The purpose of this study is to assess users’ perceptions of The University of Texas at Arlington’s campus landscape. This research focuses on The University of Texas at Arlington’s campus landscape design element and characteristics. It also discusses the users’ experiences in the campus landscapes and draws lessons to enlighten future landscape architecture practice. The University of Texas at Arlington (UT Arlington) is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and is the second largest public university in the UT system. Approximately 40,000 people use the UT Arlington campus every day. The review of literature demonstrates that campus landscapes are …

Community Design Centers (Cdcs) On The Upsurge: Investigating Perceptions Amongst Cdc Leaders And Administrators In Texas, Rodriguez Robert Kevin May 2016

Community Design Centers (Cdcs) On The Upsurge: Investigating Perceptions Amongst Cdc Leaders And Administrators In Texas, Rodriguez Robert Kevin

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

For several decades, community design centers (CDCs) have specialized in professional design and planning assistance to non-profit groups, agencies, and individuals that lack the funding or resources to otherwise receive such services (ACD 2016). Notwithstanding the historical context under which CDCs were originally created, their persistent presence since the year 2000 has seen the number of CDCs nearly triple in North America, from just under 70, to "over 200 active organizations, covering ever-expanding geographic, disciplinary, and strategic territories" (ACSA 2014, 4). Yet, this growth aside, "CDCs remain a somewhat silent partner in the world of design" (Curry 2004, 70) with …

An Assessment Of The Use Hand, Digital And Hybrid Graphics In Contemporary Landscape Architecture Practice, Natalia Chuprakova

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Visual representation is a critical component of professional landscape architecture practice. The tools that are used for visual representation production are hand, digital and hybrid graphics. This thesis evaluates the existing representational tools available in professional practice within United States. It takes into consideration factors such as professional position, years of accrued experience in the profession, level of professional degree and type of landscape architecture practice and shows how the various factors noted above influence choices made regarding graphics type preference. Furthermore, this study evaluates the role that given graphics types play in the design process, as well as current …

Prediction Of The Root Anchorage Of Native Young Plants Using Bayesian Inference, Ryan Wai Man Yan, Lin Zhang, Flora T. Y. Leung, Ka-Veng Yuen Jan 2016

Prediction Of The Root Anchorage Of Native Young Plants Using Bayesian Inference, Ryan Wai Man Yan, Lin Zhang, Flora T. Y. Leung, Ka-Veng Yuen

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

The maximum vertical uproot resistance (Pmax) of a plant can be used to indicate its stability. Attempts were made to predict the Pmax of a plant empirically from some of its size parameters. In practice, an infinite number of empirical models with different complexities can be formulated. This study presents a Bayesian model class selection method to evaluate the plausibility of each empirical model among a list of model candidates. The models were ranked to identify the most plausible one. A database of vertical uproot resistance of four shrubs and trees native to Hong Kong was first compiled by performing …
