Daylighting In Buildings: Investigating The Relationship Between Daylight Levels And Building Compactness In Various Contemporary Architectural Types. [Efficient Typology Classification], Andrew Welch, Ermal Shpuza Phd
Symposium of Student Scholars
One of the key ways of improving the energy efficiency of a building is to enhance the daylight levels and reduce the need for artificial lighting. Good daylight levels are also associated with increased productivity and the well-being of a building's occupants. Daylight levels are often a direct function of the floorplate depth, where locations near the windows receive more daylight, and those deep inside the buildings receive less. As a result, shallow floorplates and elongated buildings are usually related to higher daylight levels. However, shallow buildings that have more natural light are also associated with greater construction costs due …

Creating An Index To Graduate Theses To Support Their Discoverability, Ellen Petraits
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
As a Research and Instruction Librarian, one of the most frequent questions I'm asked is how to find past theses on a particular topic or theme. There is an active thesis culture at RISD that goes beyond writing and binding a text. An exhibition is held in the graduate gallery to celebrate a curated selection of theses at the beginning of the academic year. (See Book of Thesis Books) Theses can range in format from an artist book to a loose-leaf portfolio. Many emphasize the visual and are a bridge to the student’s studio work. They may include unusual or …

Daylighting In Buildings: Investigating The Relationship Between Daylight Levels And Building Compactness In Various Contemporary Architectural Types., Andrew Welch, Ermal Shpuza Phd
Symposium of Student Scholars
Among the most substantial ways to improve the energy efficiency of a building is to manipulate the floorplate in ways that lets more natural light in while reducing the energy loss or gain through the envelope area. However, creating buildings that have more natural light comes with a greater construction cost due to larger envelope areas. The goal of this research is to determine what aspects of floorplate design maximize the natural light entering a building and minimize the construction costs associated with the building. In the first phase of research last year, we analyzed a sample of floorplates from …

Restoring History: Mixed-Use Hotel & Retail Center, William Chase Sisk
Symposium of Student Scholars
Monroe, Georgia, is a unique small town, located halfway between Athens and Atlanta. The small-town atmosphere and amenities have become a popular destination for people attracted to the historic buildings, downtown events and UGA football home games. Monroe is popular for its wedding venues, antique malls, and car shows, but there are not enough hotel rooms. Currently within the historic downtown, there are only one bed and breakfast, two AirBNB’s, and no hotels, although every downtown storefront is occupied by restaurants, retail stores, and businesses.
The need for overnight accommodations has raised the possibility of a new mixed-use hotel and …

Pediatric Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic: Design Focus On Invisible Disabilities With Sensory Sensitivity, Shelbi Boehme
Student Research Symposium
The focus of this research presentation is to design a Pediatric Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic in Logan, Utah providing diverse therapy spaces for children diagnosed with a range of disabilities. The American Disabilities Act (ADA) implemented some good generic standards for accessibility for persons with physical disabilities, but what about universal design for all disabilities? Designing spaces for a Pediatric Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic involves researching many different types of disabilities that would be treated at the facility. Particularly invisible disabilities such as Autism, Multiple Sclerosis, Asperger Syndrome, and Traumatic Brain Injuries. These types of disabilities are often left out when designing …
Empowering Women Through The Design Of Domestic Violence Shelters, Alexa Keim
Empowering Women Through The Design Of Domestic Violence Shelters, Alexa Keim
Kansas State University Undergraduate Research Conference
According to a report published by The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey in 2017, one in four women are sexually assaulted, physically assaulted and/or stalked by an intimate partner. According to the same survey, these women feel fearful, unsafe and show symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Supportive housing, in the form of domestic violence shelters, provide these women with a physical environment to combat their situation and to promote their future independence (Pable, 2013, p. 269; Phenice, L. & Griffore, R., 2013). Environmental factors can have an impact on women's psychological sense of safety in this time of …

Increasing Retention Rates For South Hall Residency, Cody Johnson, Catherine Rivette
School of Human Sciences Research Showcase
Stephen F. Austin State University's Residence Life Department aims to improve resident retention in South Hall through renovation and interior design. By improving the spaces meant for student use, we hope to increase the involvement and comfort of the residents. The existing structure was not designed for today's amenities and accessibility standards. By enlarging doorways, adding an elevator, and de-compartmentalizing the community spaces, the building becomes much more accessible to people with disabilities. These open spaces also fit into the contemporary styles of living and promote interaction between the residents and other occupants.
