Humanizing The Brutalist Interior: The Renovation Of Paul Rudolph's Claire T. Carney Library At Umass Dartmouth, Kelly Haigh, Ben Youtz

Members of the team that worked on the renovation of the Claire T. Carney Library, designed by Paul Rudolph and completed in 1972, share their design solutions for maintaining the integrity of the architecture and fostering an interior that is welcoming of its occupants. Discussions focus on interior attributes, human occupants, color, light and texture as approaches to humanize the massive concrete attributes that are notorious of Brutalist structures.

Under the guidance of Professor Edmond Saliklis and Professor Meredith Sattler, four Architectural Engineering students joined forces with three Architecture students from both Cal Poly and Vilnius Technical University in Lithuania. The portfolio exemplifies a complete reimagination of Mies van der Rohe and Myron Goldsmith's 50x50 Glass House as if it were designed today in Palm Springs, CA. The work completed in this interdisciplinary studio includes historical context, abstract creation, architectural and structural design all relating back to the Glass House.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 40 million people report feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress as the world moves at an increasingly rapid pace and faces unprecedented challenges. However, many ignore these negative thoughts and fail to acknowledge them as a serious issue. My art, which shares my own experiences, creates safe, cathartic places for viewers to think about their own emotional experiences. Crucial to this process is my use of daily objects and the creation of individualized, participatory, and multisensory experiences.

Research has shown that Flexible learning spaces have benefits in educational settings. The space has an impact on teachers' pedagogies and mindsets. In turn, instruction can be more student-centered promoting more interaction and engagement with each other and content. These findings imply that Flexible Learning Spaces can contribute to positive shifts in mindsets for teachers and students, as well as disrupting the dynamics of traditional classroom settings and instruction.

Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design

The current review examines the impact of nature experience on student academic performance. The findings suggest that the effect exists in two types of association: (1) green space and school-level academic performance; (2) outdoor educational programs and student school motivation and knowledge. Overall, the researchers predominantly found that students exposed to green space performed better academically in Grades K to 12. Meanwhile, students’ socio-economic status, the proximity of green space, types of vegetation, and subjects could also affect the association. Considering it is not unusual that researchers found SES contributing to the correlational model, future studies ought to control for …

The explicit goal of the International Space Station Archaeological Project (ISSAP) is to provide an understanding of material culture as a key component of life in space, on par with the research by biomedical and psychological scholars that has been ongoing since the 1960s. We take as our inspiration a phrase first used in the National Academy of Sciences report Human Factors in Long-Duration Spaceflight, which described a crewed spacecraft as “a microsociety in a miniworld” (Lindsley 1972, 23). The lack of research on healthcare staff experience and interior design of the spaces they work in is evident. A focus on staff perspective is needed, particularly staff who navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. This research seeks to capture those stories to develop further research in order to improve staff experience. The initial phase of this mixed-methods approach is a survey. Hypothetically, by placing providers at the center of qualitative research related to healthcare interior design, we can better understand existing healthcare spaces. Ideally, we can develop additional evidence-based, human-centered solutions to transform interior environments in healthcare.

The purpose of this study is to examine the experience second year, live on students study habits in outside academic spaces during a pandemic from 2020-2021 academic year. Through gathered testimonies of residents it was found students value their communities, appreciate localized spaces for collaboration, and acknowledged various influences that can enhance or inhibit their ability to study. Additionally, they shared the impact COVID-19 had on their personal lives, academics, and how they interacted with others. La violencia doméstica es un fenómeno que recientemente ha recibido amplia atención por parte del público y los círculos académicos, es por eso, que muchas mujeres necesitan ayuda y protección debido a las amenazas constantes de muerte a causa de sus agresores. Para ello, se establecio crear un sistema de Casas Refugio para mujeres víctimas de violencia, esto con el fin de salvaguardar la vida de ellas y sus hijos.
