NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Urbanization in Thailand has significantly reduced natural infiltration surfaces, intensified stormwater runoff, and increased the demand for effective urban drainage solutions. Bioretention systems, guided by water-sensitive urban design (WSUD) principles, offer a promising approach for enhancing infiltration and mitigating urban flooding. However, the effectiveness of bioretention depends critically on the accurate estimation of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), a key input parameter in hydrological models such as the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). Despite international guidelines, local Ks values for tropical soils and vegetation remain scarce, limiting model reliability. This study aims to determine its suitability as a filter media layer …

Mixed-Use Developments And Urban Megaprojects In The Global South : A Systematic Review And Interpretation Of A Blurred Intersection, Federico Puggioni, Nij Tontisirin
Mixed-Use Developments And Urban Megaprojects In The Global South : A Systematic Review And Interpretation Of A Blurred Intersection, Federico Puggioni, Nij Tontisirin
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
This article examines the intersection of two distinct strains of urban studies: mixed-use development and urban megaprojects, through a systematic review of literature. One strain focuses on integrating diverse uses and functions within a single space, known as 'mixed-use'. The other originates from the technical complexities of megaprojects adapted to architecture and urban design. The article seeks to address a gap in the literature by clarifying the conceptual yet geographical overlaps between these two strains, which often have broad, blurred boundaries; it proposes a novel framework for defining and interpreting the related literature at this conceptual intersection.

Dynamics Of Landscape Transformation And Governance Of Bangkok’S Urban Waterways, Wanida Numsuk
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
This paper critically examines the shortcomings of traditional Thai institutions in urban governance focusing on Bangkok Urban Waterways (BUW) conceptualised as dynamic and essential landscape elements. Framing BUW through the lens of ‘landscape governance’, the paper explores how institutional practices and management actions have led to erosion of cultural heritage, ineffective flood control, and the marginalisation of local communities. The research asks: To what extent does the governance of BUW contribute to these changing landscapes? To do this, the paper draws on extensive qualitative fieldwork, including interviews with government agencies, experts, practitioners, NGOs, and in-depth fieldwork with residents. The findings …

Nat Kunn And Nat Nann: Changes Of “Body Techniques” And Domestic Spaces Within The Spiritual Cult Of Myanmar, Aung Khant
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The British colonization of Burma in 1885 marked a turning point in Myanmar’s traditional society, particularly in changes of body techniques, shikho (prostration), and the practice of wearing or removing shoes in sacred spaces. While recent scholars have examined the changes in body techniques and spiritual cult, the relationship between body techniques and domestic spaces has remained underexplored. Tracing the changes in techniques from Colonial Burma to contemporary Myanmar, this thesis explores the relationship between body techniques and domestic spaces, Nat Kunn, small shrines dedicated to specific Nats, deities, and Nat Nann, which are larger shrines for the Nat Pantheon. …
The Insignificant: Curating “Everyday” Lights In Bangkok, Bhuvarin Thaveetermsakul
The Insignificant: Curating “Everyday” Lights In Bangkok, Bhuvarin Thaveetermsakul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The “insignificant” in this thesis is not meant unimportant, but a neutral state of the subject waiting to be acknowledged by the observer. This concept is based on the theories of “everyday life,” proposed by Charles Baudelaire and Maurice Blanchot. In “The Painter of Modern Life” (1863), Baudelaire redefined art as the object of everyday, while Blanchot’s “Everyday Speech” (1959) described the everyday as something difficult to grasp yet existed along the urban streets. This thesis is the exploration into everyday lights and darkness in different architectural scales and cultural contexts. The exploration is classified through scholarly texts from Electric light: …
Cinematic Architecture: Perceiving The Real From The Reel In How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies Film Setting, Edbert Theo Fortino
Cinematic Architecture: Perceiving The Real From The Reel In How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies Film Setting, Edbert Theo Fortino
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cinematic architecture is a multidisciplinary approach that examines the relationship between film and architecture. This thesis explores how film offers a unique way to immerse audiences in spatial experience. Through time, movement, and visual framing, film can dramatize or reinterpret space according to the director’s vision, making it a valuable medium for understanding how architecture is perceived, used, and felt. Film also visualizes fragments of real everyday life, cultural practices, and spatial behaviour. Observing how characters inhabit and interact with spaces reveals how real users interpret the functional and symbolic meanings of architecture—insights often overlooked when architects rely solely on …

Design Concepts Of Sun Shading Devices For Office Buildings, Designed By Intaren In Bangkok, Thailand, 1969-1974, Aung Kaung Myat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Tropical modernism in Bangkok in the 1970s synthesized modern architectural principles with the demands of Thailand’s hot and humid climate. Various design approaches focusing on deterring the tropical sun were incorporated into the building design. In doing so, sun shading played a major role in climatic responsiveness in tropical environments. Within tropical modernism, numerous buildings with climate-responsive features have been designed by local and foreign architects, with Intaren Architects & Engineers being one of them. Studying the shading devices of office buildings designed by this firm between 1969 and 1974 in Bangkok, Thailand, this research explores the concept and philosophy …

Influence Of Sociocultural Aspects And Home Modification On Fall Risks Mitigation Among The Elderly In Thailand, Sumavalee Chindapol
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
This study investigates the impact of sociocultural dimensions on home modifications aimed at mitigating fall risks among elderly individuals residing in community settings. Personal measurements and questionnaire interviews were conducted across five regions in Thailand. Additionally, fall risk assessments were performed on the households of the elderly participants. These assessments incorporated both personal health factors and environmental risks associated with falls, resulting in quantifiable scores. The factors included health conditions, body size, sociocultural factors such as family conditions, physical-cultural aspects of elevated houses, bathroom and bedroom. The research revealed that these factors are significantly associated with fall risk (ρ <0.01), except body dimensions. Differences in body size among elderly individuals in different regions were significantly related to incidences of fall risk (ρ <0.05 in Chiang Mai female, Khonkaen male, Rangsit female, and Songkhla female). The contribution of this research is that different regions have varying body limitations and living culture. It was concluded that elderly females in Chiang Mai are at the highest risk of falling due to body shrinkage, residing in vernacular houses with hazards, and living alone. Overall, universal design may not be directly applicable for home modification in each region. Consequently, the study suggested that home modifications alone may not offer a comprehensive solution for mitigating fall risks as sociocultural factors related to living conditions also play a significant role in shaping these outcomes.

The sales rate is very important information for condominium design and development processes. However, predicting it accurately requires substantial expertise and experience. This research investigated the use of a Deep Learning model to predict condominium sales rates and explored various determinants that influence sales rates. The research was done by (1) identifying the determinant factors from the literature review, (2) collecting 199 data from market survey reports, (3) creating a Deep Learning model that can predict the sales rate of a condominium by its determinant factors, and (4) verifying the model by checking its coefficient of determination (R2 value). The …

The comfort of a landscape can be seen from the microclimate and traffic noise in the landscape. Traffic noise, including tire and engine noise, is a common disturbance, particularly in cities, and can lead to diseases. Indonesia Kaya Park, located in Mugassari, Semarang City, is an urban park and public space managed by the Djarum Foundation. Despite numerous studies evaluating its accessibility and biophilic elements, the condition of traffic noise nor potential interventions have been considered. The research question aims to understand the traffic noise condition of Indonesia Kaya Park and identify necessary interventions. The study used a mixed methodology, …

Reverberation time (RT) measures how long sound takes to decay in a space, affecting speech intelligibility and sound quality. Calculating RT using Sabine’s formula is time-consuming and error-prone due to manual extraction of room volume and material surface areas. Balancing RT and cost further complicates material selection. This paper automates RT calculation and optimization using Building Information Modeling (BIM) and generative design (GD). Sound absorption coefficients are input into a BIM model’s material properties, and visual programming (VP) extracts room geometries, materials, and absorption coefficients to compute RT and material costs. A multi-objective optimization algorithm in Autodesk GD identifies the …

Thailand's aging population includes a growing number of near-centenarians and centenarians living at home. Grounded in Lawton’s Ecological Theory of Aging, this study aimed to examine whether an unsafe home environment (outdoor, indoor, and additional hazards) has an indirect negative effect on subjective health among elderly Thai adults. Participants were 141 elderly (ages 80–112) but healthy adults, most of whom were living in well-maintained, single-story homes. Instruments used in the study included the Self-Rated Health Question, the Social Contact Scale, the Loneliness Question, and the Home Environmental Hazards Checklist. Findings reveal common indoor hazards such …

Changes in demographic structures in an aging society have diminished farming employment and incomes of old residents of Talat Mai subdistrict, Angthong Province, Thailand. Under decentralization, the local government assumes primary development responsibility in managing the basic needs of citizens. This case study demonstrates how the local government uses the built environment—Wiset Chai Chan Historical Park Royalty Monument —as an instrument for community development to enhance life quality for old residents. This study examines ways in which the park's construction as a built environment are shaped and consequences due to community development as an aging society. Data was gathered by …
