This thesis is to serve as an investigation and response into the architectural issue of scale juxtaposition. In this case the condition which occurs is the result of a modern feat of engineering at one scale, disrupting and imposing itself onto an urban and historical context which is at a more intimate scale. Consequently, there is a loss of identity or spatial relationships in the urban context, which may have existed prior to this modern intervention. It is my goal to take advantage and develop a response to these disparate scales and their images. It is also the opportunity for …

Parametric Excitation Of An Axially Moving Band By Periodic Edge Loading, W-Z Ben Wu, C. D. Mote Oct 1986

Parametric Excitation Of An Axially Moving Band By Periodic Edge Loading, W-Z Ben Wu, C. D. Mote

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Simple torsion parametric resonance and combination torsion-bending parametric resonance can be excited in an axially moving band by an in-plane periodic edge loading that is normal to the longitudinal axis of the band. The model simulates band saws, belts, magnetic tapes and like systems under edge forces. Sum combination instabilities, in particular, permit the excitation of low frequency resonances by higher frequency edge forces. Simple bending, combination torsion-torsion, combination bending-bending and difference type parametric instabilities are not excited by periodic normal edge forces. The space of band parameters leading to parametric instability shrinks with increasing axial tension and with increasing …

Effects Of Cd(Ii) And Cu(Ii) On A Biofilm System, Shoou Yuh Chang, Ju-Chang Huang, Yow Chyun Liu Jan 1986

Effects Of Cd(Ii) And Cu(Ii) On A Biofilm System, Shoou Yuh Chang, Ju-Chang Huang, Yow Chyun Liu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There is little information available in the literature to describe the effect of heavy metals on a fixed-film biological waste treatment system. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the toxic effect of Cd(II) and Cu(II) on a fixed-film biological reactor (rotating biological contractor) in treating a sugar waste. Different levels of cadmium (5 and 20 mg/L) and copper (1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 mg/L) were dosed to a three-stage RBC unit treating an influent of 300 mg/L sugar solution. Experimental results indicated that the treatment efficiency was not adversely affected by the presence of copper at …

Permeability Testing In The Triaxial Cell., Gregory W. Carpenter, Richard W. Stephenson Jan 1986

Permeability Testing In The Triaxial Cell., Gregory W. Carpenter, Richard W. Stephenson

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

It Has Been Suggested that a Triaxial Shear Test Chamber Can Be Used to Measure the Permeability of Low Permeability Soils. to Verify This, the Influence of a Number of Test Parameters on the Measured Coefficient of Permeability Was Investigated. Results Indicate Such Permeability Tests Should Be Performed on Samples Having a Minimum Diameter of 71. 1 Mm (2. 8 In.) and a Length to Diameter Ratio of 0. 5 to 1. 0. It Was Found that a Permeant Consisting of 1 G of Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate (Epsom Salt) Dissolved in 1 L of Deaired, Distilled Water is Adequate for …
