Study Abroad 2019 Kenya And Tanzania, School Of Architecture

School of Architecture Study Abroad & Special Programs

In summer 2019, two UT Arlington faculty led a study abroad to Kenya and Tanzania, East Africa -- Professor Diane Jones Allen, Director of Landscape Architecture in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA) and Professor Michael Zaretsky, Director of Architectural Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering. They brought seven UT Arlington students from the disciplines Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, and Public Affairs to work with communities in rural Tanzania. They worked with a Cincinnati-based non-profit called Village Life Outreach Project (VLOP) with whom Professor Zaretsky has worked with since 2008. …

Mapping In The Humanities: Gis Lessons For Poets, Historians, And Scientists, Emily W. Fairey May 2019

Mapping In The Humanities: Gis Lessons For Poets, Historians, And Scientists, Emily W. Fairey

Open Educational Resources

User-friendly Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is the common thread of this collection of presentations, and activities with full lesson plans. The first section of the site contains an overview of cartography, the art of creating maps, and then looks at historical mapping platforms like Hypercities and Donald Rumsey Historical Mapping Project. In the next section Google Earth Desktop Pro is introduced, with lessons and activities on the basics of GE such as pins, paths, and kml files, as well as a more complex activity on "georeferencing" an historic map over Google Earth imagery. The final section deals with ARCGIS Online …

Re-Imagining A Neighborhood Center: Completing Mixed-Use Streets In The Elmwood Neighborhood Utilizing Dallas' Complete Streets Design Manual, Shirley Jane Mathews, Ardeshir Anjomani May 2019

Re-Imagining A Neighborhood Center: Completing Mixed-Use Streets In The Elmwood Neighborhood Utilizing Dallas' Complete Streets Design Manual, Shirley Jane Mathews, Ardeshir Anjomani

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Walkable neighborhoods with adjacent commercial centers have the ability to encourage mode shifts to walking, bicycling, or transit. Mode shifts from single-occupancy vehicles (SOV) to the destinations within a neighborhood center of Elmwood's size may result in approximately 3,000 SOV trip reductions per day (H-GAC, 2018). This study examines the Dallas Complete Streets Design Manual (2016) and applies the Dallas Complete Streets Vision to a 1,400 foot (.3 mile) segment of Edgefield Avenue, adapting the guidelines to Edgefield Avenue with site-specific consideration. It refers to the Dallas Complete Streets Design Guidelines in the development of a complete street proposal for …

Tree Density And Diversity In Hong Kong’S Public Housing Estates: Fromprovision Injustice To Socio-Ecological Inclusiveness., Louis Shing Him Lee, C.Y. Jim, Allen Hao Zhang Jan 2019

Tree Density And Diversity In Hong Kong’S Public Housing Estates: Fromprovision Injustice To Socio-Ecological Inclusiveness., Louis Shing Him Lee, C.Y. Jim, Allen Hao Zhang

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Socio-economically underprivileged urban communities might suffer from restricted access to urban forests. Environmental injustice research on urban greenery in Asian cities is lacking. Public housing estates in Hong Kong, accommodating low-income households and over half of the 7.45 million population, were investigated for injustice in tree provision. Two clustering schemes used socio-economic and ecological characteristics to classify 93 estates. Factor analysis of 14 socio-economic variables identified four factors related to deprivation, namely ageing population, overcrowding, working poor with high academic qualifications, and marginalised language minorities. Principal component analysis of six ecological indices returned two components related to tree density and …

Tree Distribution, Morphology And Modelled Air Pollution In Urban Parks, Yang Xing, Peter Brimblecombe, Sifeng Wang, Allen Hao Zhang Jan 2019

Tree Distribution, Morphology And Modelled Air Pollution In Urban Parks, Yang Xing, Peter Brimblecombe, Sifeng Wang, Allen Hao Zhang

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Trees offer a range of ecosystem services and remain important in providing human benefits. However, emerging literature questions the long-accepted view of trees being able to improve air quality in urban parks. The aerodynamic effect of trees was identified as a major reason for the change of pollutant distribution in near-road parks, where trees can act as porous barriers and cause localised concentration increase. Although not yet fully developed, planting strategies aiming to mitigate the negative effect of vegetation on air quality should be encouraged in future park design. In this study, we explored the effect of tree planting design …

Species Diversity And Spatial Pattern Of Old And Precious Trees In Macau, Allen Hao Zhang, Po Ying Lai, Chi Yung Jim Jan 2019

Species Diversity And Spatial Pattern Of Old And Precious Trees In Macau, Allen Hao Zhang, Po Ying Lai, Chi Yung Jim

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

The world's fast pace of urbanization has exerted profound pressure on urban trees. With over 400 years of urban history, Macau has developed an exceptionally high population density and ultra-compact mode, yet it permits survival of interesting and diverse heritage trees. These outstanding living remnants connote special values in history, ecology and botany. In conjunction with commemorative importance, they have been designated as Old and Precious Trees (OPT). This study evaluated the OPT with reference to: (a) species diversity and evenness; (b) spatial distribution; (c) tree dimensions, age and health; and (d) spatial differentiation of tree attributes by four districts …

Spatial Differentiation Of Heritage Trees In The Rapidly-Urbanizing City Of Shenzhen, China, Po Ying Lai, Cy Jim, Guang Da Tang, Wen Jun Hong, Hao Zhang Jan 2019

Spatial Differentiation Of Heritage Trees In The Rapidly-Urbanizing City Of Shenzhen, China, Po Ying Lai, Cy Jim, Guang Da Tang, Wen Jun Hong, Hao Zhang

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

In China, heritage trees are actively surveyed and reported. Over 300 relevant published articles were reviewed to assess the contents, trends and geographical distributions of the investigations. The majority of the heritage trees studies in China were found in the eastern provinces and published within 2010–2014. Most studies reported surveys on all old trees. For studies focused on single species, Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) and Chinese Yew (Taxus chinensis) was most frequently reported. Unlike the champion tree registry in the US and other countries, the tree registry in China emphasized more on the tree age than the size. We then have …

Enabling Sustainable Built Heritage Revitalisation From A Socio-Technicalperspective: A Case Study, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Huiying Hou Jan 2019

Enabling Sustainable Built Heritage Revitalisation From A Socio-Technicalperspective: A Case Study, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Huiying Hou

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

This study aims to investigate built heritage revitalisation projects in Hong Kong through a case study.
