Assessing Elements Of Urban Public Space Under Elevated Freeways: Application To The West End’S Dallas, Adrianna E. Tobias

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

This thesis investigates the revitalization of spaces found underneath elevated freeways into valued urban public spaces. These spaces are created when elevated freeways carve through dense city centers. Literature addressing the history of freeways, their sometimes-destructive impact on the urban fabric of cities and the unique role elevated freeways place in this destruction is reviewed. A brief review of an unintended consequence of elevated freeways as well as the impacts elevated freeways have had in Texas is also reviewed. The research employs three methods which rely on the collecting and synthesizing of data from literature reviews, case studies, site observation …

Strategic Landscape Utilization Of Undeveloped Lands Within Dallas Executive Airport Boundary: Airport Stormwater Management, Ali Khoshkar

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

The purpose of this research is to investigate and propose a sustainable stormwater management improvement for the Dallas Executive Airport future master plan development while carefully considering wildlife preservation and the beautification of the new facility. The literature review draws upon documented research that global aviation growth causes increasing environmental issues. An in-depth review of the history of the airport’s environmental impact shows an increasing concern which ultimately lead to the assigned regulations. The research dives into existing environmental issues caused by air transportation, focusing specifically on stormwater pollutions at small airports and the applicable solutions within the airport boundary …

The Economics Of Landscapes: Why Invest In Landscape Architecture In Mixed-Use Developments/Centers In Texas, Ann Bridget Podeszwa Dec 2018

The Economics Of Landscapes: Why Invest In Landscape Architecture In Mixed-Use Developments/Centers In Texas, Ann Bridget Podeszwa

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

The purpose of this research is to understand the extent to which developers perceive landscape architecture to be a valuable component of mixed-use developments/centers in Texas and how such perceptions add value to their investment strategies. The research focuses on the mixed-use center landscape typology, a growth sector in Texas regional real estate development (VNT, 2014). Since 2000, approximately an 80% Texas population growth occurred in the four major metropolitan areas, Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio (Slijk,.& Saving, 2018) and global trends illustrate that by the year 2050 70% of world population will live in cities (United Nations, 2018). …

Addressing Issues Relating To Food Deserts Through Empowerment; A Community Garden Design Proposal For The Glencrest Neighborhood Of Fort Worth, Texas, Steven Nunez

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

The high rate of population growth in urban areas over the past century has contributed to the creation of food deserts, which are areas characterized by the lack of access to affordable fresh and healthy foods. Food deserts, also known as low-access communities, are believed to be linked to food insecurity and diet related health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that approximately 23.5 million Americans live in food deserts, often occurring in historically disadvantaged neighborhoods (USDA, 2009). Introducing full-service grocery stores to these areas is frequently promoted as the …

Assessment Of Expanding Light Rail Transit Systems Versus Highway Systems: Influence On Land Use Change And Habitat Fragmentation, Behnoud Aghapour Jul 2018

Assessment Of Expanding Light Rail Transit Systems Versus Highway Systems: Influence On Land Use Change And Habitat Fragmentation, Behnoud Aghapour

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

The purpose of this research is to assess and investigate the impact of expanding the Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems versus conventional highway systems for land use change, land formation, and habitat fragmentation in the Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) metropolitan area as a highly developing urban area. The DFW metropolitan area is one of the fastest growing urban areas in the United States (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016). Successfully accommodating this population growth requires North Texans to collectively address important issues including: environmental degradation, suburbanization, suburban sprawl, landscape formation and fragmentation, lack of public transportation, community and well-being needs, transportation expansion, …

Sustainable Sites Initiative Certification In Texas: Obstacles And Benefits Affecting Stakeholder Perception, Jamie Chism Leonie

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

The purpose of this research is to examine perceptions of key stakeholders involved in three SITES®-certified pilot projects in Texas to determine the obstacles and benefits they experienced in certifying the projects. The Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES®) is a sustainability-focused framework that guides landscape architects, engineers and others toward practices that protect ecosystems and enhance the mosaic of benefits they continuously provide our communities, such as climate regulation, carbon storage and flood mitigation. SITES® is the culmination of years of research and development by leading professionals in the fields of soil, water, vegetation, materials and human health (GBCI, 2017). A …
