Alternative Shelters, Sukhmann Kaur Aneja Apr 2020

Alternative Shelters, Sukhmann Kaur Aneja

Architecture Senior Theses

In the spring of 2018, a small group of homeless people took shelter underneath the scaffolding at 1441 Broadway in Times Square after a massive rainstorm made its way through New York City. They hung their wet clothes on the steel bracing and slept on unfolded cardboard boxes. This makeshift encampment lasted for a few days before the police officially kicked everyone out.1 Two years before that, homeless New Yorkers set up a similar camp underneath the scaffolding in NoHo. Residents of NoHo blamed a surge of local construction for the implementation of sheds under which people could hide out.2 …

American Home: Shelter Optimized For Climate, Karen Kentile

Architecture Senior Theses

"Architecture attuned to building form and energy production and consumption can, in turn, suggest an alternate landscape for the country...

This book addresses architecture's role in the energy crisis, recognizing that residential buildings account for 53.7% of the built environment and their gridded energy produces over 21% of the United States' carbon emissions. This thesis begins to implement a process for design which can essentially optimize shelter based on climate, and further develop a local context for dwelling."

Transitioning Society For An Elderly Care Community Within The City, John Budesa

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Instead of isolating senior citizens form the community, my desire is to actively engage them with it; to facilitate the outside community to want to engage with the senior citizens. By combining the typology of the mall as an extremely public and interactive space with the typology of the monastery as the epitome of private living on a secluded site, one could imagine a community of commercial and residential spaces as opposed to the current model for elderly care."

The Virtual Real, Kurt Schnarr

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Digital technologies have led to the transformation of different types of information into binary form. This transformation changes the way one perceives materiality, space, and its relationship to information. On one level. cyberspace creates a condition in which communication, travel, and education occur at a fast and efficient rate. On another level, cyberspace allows one to exist within a different condition, another world created by simulation and virtual reality. However, one cannot engage these virtual worlds without the existence of physical space. Aside from being an essential element for human existence, physical space evokes human contact, which must occur to …

Advertising / Gender Studies, Delia Nevola

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The architectural blurring of genered space. IMages are presented to society as the representation of men/women, and what it means to be one versus the other. This imagery takes form in the products that are produced and dvertised. Architecture will therefore take on the role of (re)presentation, meaning the presentation of products and the representation of genes, through the investigation of binary opposites. These binary opposites, those that are assumed by society, become the architectural elements to demonstrate the presumed differences between genders. The intervention which establishes a blue between these binaries advocates a degenderization of architecture."
