Stained Glass Windows Of Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio, Produced By Wilbur H. Burnham Studios, Michael Tevesz
Stained Glass Windows Of Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio, Produced By Wilbur H. Burnham Studios, Michael Tevesz
Michael J. Tevesz
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral has over forty large stained glass windows that range in age from the 15 to the 20th Century. The medieval windows were produced in England and Germany, while the more contemporary windows were produced by such prominent studios as those directed by Willet, Connick, Tiffany, Heaton, Young, and Burnham. The more contemporary windows are of considerable artistic and historical interest, but there is very little information available about them. This monograph specifically focuses on the windows of Trinity Cathedral produced by the Wilbur H. Burnham Studios. The Burnham Studios windows are the most accessible windows within the …

A Social Network Based Framework For Assessing Risks And Vulnerability In Built Environment, Hemanta Doloi, Robert Crawford, Craig Langston, Low Pheng
A Social Network Based Framework For Assessing Risks And Vulnerability In Built Environment, Hemanta Doloi, Robert Crawford, Craig Langston, Low Pheng
Craig Langston
Our built environment comprises large interdependent infrastructure networks. When we add a new piece of infrastructure or a new building into the mix, we rather increase the complexity further in relation operations and management of such infrastructure network. Ensuring appropriate functionality of these networks is absolutely crucial for supporting the community residing within the built environment. Functioning of a society depends on numerous infrastructure functions offered by the range of infrastructure network collectively. If any part of the infrastructure network becomes obsolete due to any external or internal disturbances, the impact will be eventually felt within the community. Whether such …

Planning For Campus Collections 2013, Ludmilla Pavlova-Gillham, Elizabeth Dumont, Dennis Swinford
Ludmilla D Pavlova
During the Campus Master Planning effort the need to better understand and plan for the UMass Amherst collections was identified and an ad-hoc committee was created to help advance a better understanding of the existing collections and how best to plan for the future. The committee was comprised of Directors/ curators of campus academic collections, Campus Planning staff and other related campus professionals. The first task of the committee was to develop a basis for creating a planning framework for the academic collections. The Committee defined existing collections and set a framework and common language that enabled the classification and …
Traditional Heritage Management: The Case Of Australia And Tanzania, Johari Hussein, Lynne Armitage
Traditional Heritage Management: The Case Of Australia And Tanzania, Johari Hussein, Lynne Armitage
Lynne Armitage
Much has been written within and outside the heritage sector about traditional knowledge and practice. It is often characterised as an established movement that has contributed significantly to the local, national and international practice in conservation. Yet, the emergence of conservation practice has caused tremendous changes and a neglect of traditional knowledge that was critical for the survival of the Indigenous cultural heritage that exists today. The objective of this paper is to explore diverse approaches to traditional knowledge and practice that Indigenous peoples have employed to achieve management of their cultural landscape in Australia and Tanzania. The paper also …
City Of Felt And Concrete: Negotiating Cultural Hybridity In Mongolia's Capital Of Ulaanbaatar, Joshua Hagen, Alexander Diener
City Of Felt And Concrete: Negotiating Cultural Hybridity In Mongolia's Capital Of Ulaanbaatar, Joshua Hagen, Alexander Diener
Joshua Hagen
Capital cities play an integral role in the construction of national identity. This is particularly true when the capital is the country's only major urban center. Over the course of its history, Mongolia's capital of Ulaanbaatar has been periodically reshaped to reflect competing trajectories of national culture. This article examines the evolving symbolism of architecture, urban design, and public space in Ulaanbaatar as a means of exploring Mongolia's complex negotiation between its traditional culture (mobile pastoralism and Shamanism/Buddhism), its socialist legacy, and globalization. Amidst the rampant social change of the last two decades, rather ambiguous national narratives have emerged in …
From Socialist To Post-Socialist Cities: Narrating The Nation Through Urban Space, Joshua Hagen, Alexander Diener
From Socialist To Post-Socialist Cities: Narrating The Nation Through Urban Space, Joshua Hagen, Alexander Diener
Joshua Hagen
The development of post-socialist cities has emerged as a major field of study among critical theorists from across the social sciences. Originally constructed under the dictates of central planners and designed to serve the demands of command economies, post-socialist urban centers currently develop at the nexus of varied and often competing economic, cultural, and political forces. Among these, nationalist aspirations, previously simmering beneath the official rhetoric of communist fraternity and veneer of architectural conformity, have emerged as dominant factors shaping the urban landscape. This article examines patterns, processes, and practices concerning the cultural politics of architecture, urban planning, and identity …

Evaluation Of Whodata.Org As An Applied Public Participation Geographic Information System (Ppgis), Derreck Blake Deason
Derreck Blake Deason
Recent advancements in the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in planning theory and practice are in direct response to a growing awareness among planners for the need to increase public participation in the processes involved in neighborhood and community planning. (NCGIS, 1996) Public Participation Geographic Information System (PPGIS) focuses on the social implications of how people, space, and environment are represented in GIS (Seiber, 2006). The use of PPGIS has shifted with improved community access to tools and talent which were, along with funding, significant barriers to implementation. In 2009, WhoData.org was created to meet the needs of a …

Financing Asean Connectivity, Fauziah Zen, Michael Regan
Michael Regan
In line with the globalisation trend, it becomes inevitable for the South East Asian economies to prepare themselves to move towards the path of a more border-less and well-connected world. Evidence has shown that countries can gain a lot from internationalisation, especially from trade, knowledge and information exchanges, and flows of people and goods. One of the key targets of ASEAN in achieving a dynamic, vibrant, globally connected and strong region is to fully realise ASEAN Connectivity which consists of three pillars, namely, physical connectivity, people-to-people connectivity, and institutional connectivity. Physical connectivity is especially important because it is not only …
Identifying Key Variables And Interactions In Statistical Models Of Building Energy Consumption Using Regularization, David Hsu
David Hsu
Statistical models can only be as good as the data put into them. Data about energy consumption continues to grow, particularly its non-technical aspects, but these variables are often interpreted differently among disciplines, datasets, and contexts. Selecting key variables and interactions is therefore an important step in achieving more accurate predictions, better interpretation, and identification of key subgroups for further analysis.
This paper therefore makes two main contributions to the modeling and analysis of energy consumption of buildings. First, it introduces regularization, also known as penalized regression, for principled selection of variables and interactions. Second, this approach is demonstrated by …

Review Of Assessment Tools For Baseline And Follow-Up Measurement Of Age-Friendliness, Michelle Dellamora, Aleksandra Zecevic, Donna Baxter, Anita Cramp, Deborah Fitzsimmons, Marita Kloseck
Deborah A Fitzsimmons
The World Health Organization (WHO) concept of an Age-Friendly Community (AFC) has emerged as a response to demographic aging and increased urbanization. Although the WHO is in the process of establishing indicators of age-friendliness, currently, no tool has been identified as optimal to measure the age-friendliness of a community on a large scale. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify and examine currently available surveys and questionnaires that can be used to conduct large-scale, quantitative assessments of the age-friendliness in a community. In addition to a literature review, assessment tools were gathered through personal communications. Results indicate that …

Mosque Design, Akel Kahera
Akel Kahera
Over the last five decades more than 100 mosques have been established in Texas to serve the estimated 150,000 Muslims living mostly in its largest cities. The urban mosque, also known as an Islamic center, represents the heart of the Muslim community and provides the most visual expression of Muslim religious identity. The mosque (masjid in Arabic) is where the faithful gather to engage in communal worship, spiritual retreat, matrimony, education, and social activities.

God’S Dominion: Omar Ibn Said Use Of Arabic Literacy As Opposition To Slavery, Akel Kahera
Akel Kahera
Omar ibn Said’s Th e Life of Omar Ibn Said, Written by Himself (1831) occupies a unique position within the slave narrative tradition. As the only surviving Arabic autobiography written by a slave from the United States, the Life juxtaposes a religious exegesis based on the textual authority of the Qur’an with a first-person account of Omar’s life. Only recently rediscovered, having been found in a trunk in a Virginia at-tic in 1995 and sold to a private collector after being lost since 1920, the manuscript has sparked renewed interest in writings by enslaved Muslims in America, and in particular …
Negotiating Work And Family: Lifestyle Migration, Potential Selves And The Role Of Second Homes As Potential Spaces, Brian Hoey
Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.
This article is based on ethnographic research conducted in the USA with migrants who use an act of relocation as a means of deliberately constructing identity as well as seeking greater ‘balance’ and ‘control’ in their lives. Specifically, it examines how ‘second’ homes can serve as a transitional or ‘potential space’ in the lives of these migrants not only between different geographic places but also what are taken to be distinct identities and ideals associated with these places and the lives lived in them. Such behaviour is not simply about coping and adapting to a new environment; rather, it is …
Postindustrial Societies, Brian Hoey
Postindustrial Societies, Brian Hoey
Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.
The term postindustrial society presupposes categorizing society based on an economic means of classification. Its use rests on assessing the relative status of manufacturing industry as an economic sector. Significant adjustment in sectoral location and nature of employment precipitated by late-twentieth-century deindustrialization in the developed world led many social theorists and critics to predict broad changes throughout domains of everyday life. Some began to speak not only of sectoral transformation but also of an emergent ‘ postindustrial society. ’ Following earlier agrarian and industrial ‘ revolutions, ’ postindustrialism suggested yet another revolution that would again transform how societies were organized.

Challenges And Opportunities To Develop A Smart City: A Case Study Of Gold Coast, Australia, Bhishna Bajracharya, David Cattell, Isara Khanjanasthiti
Bhishna Bajracharya
With the rapid growth of information and communication technologies, there is a growing interest in developing smart cities with a focus on the knowledge economy, use of sensors and mobile technologies to plan and manage cities. The proponents argue that these emerging technologies have potential application in efficiently managing the environment and infrastructure, promoting economic development and actively engaging the public, thus contributing to building safe, healthy, sustainable and resilient cities. However, are there other important elements in addition to technologies which can contribute to the creation of smart cities? What are some of the challenges and opportunities for developing …
Theorising The ‘Fifth Migration’ In The United States: Understanding Lifestyle Migration From An Integrated Approach, Brian Hoey
Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.
This chapter is an empirically-informed discussion of relevant social theory for examining the phenomenon of lifestyle migration in the United States in both rural and urban settings. Specifically, the chapter explores key explanatory models born of research into so-called non-economic migration occurring since the early twentieth century—models that may be characterized as primarily either production or consumption oriented in their emphasis—as a context for outlining an integrated approach. The author then highlights changes in how some Americans appear to calculate personal and collective quality of life as engendered by an emerging economic order—based on principles of flexibility and contingency—whose affects …

Purdue University’s commitment to active learning requires facilities that support small-‐group work, peer learning, the use of technology, and other classroom innovations. The Active Learning Center is intended to provide classroom space combined seamlessly with library space to meet these needs. Members of the Libraries faculty and staff conducted a series of information-‐gathering activities to gain insight into the range of activities, work practices and preferences that the new building must support. It is our hope that the building will indeed support these activities, serve as a centrally located, flagship building for Purdue University, and support and inspire learning for …
