Changing Urban Form In A Shrinking City, Justin Hollander, Michael P. Johnson Jr., Rachel B. Drew

This paper uses building footprint data in a shrinking city, Baltimore, MD, in 1972 and 2010 to achieve two primary research objectives. The first is to understand the historical patterns of housing construction and demolition in selected row house neighborhoods in Baltimore between 1972 and 2010. The second is to understand changes in housing footprints, and associations between these changes and physical and socio-economic characteristics in selected neighborhoods. We find that housing losses and associated changes in building footprints have shown substantial variation across our study area and exhibit clustering within our study area. Brutalism-coined by Reyner Banham-began as an ideology meant to introduce notions representing a new architectural era post second world war. The mid-twentieth century, was the booming era for concrete structures, which applied both modular and imposing elements. It was a movement meant to strip architectural details and represent programmatic functions in a stoic manner. Due to its imposing qualities, the public realm has not been able to become affectionate with such structures. Thus, resulting in the demolition of several of these monumental buildings.

Many coastal mass tourism centres have attempted to reinvent themselves as they have grown from informal coastal towns into large cities. Lifestyle migration boosts urban growth as these cities become home to ‘permanent tourists’ attracted by the characteristics that attract tourism. Australia’s best known resort, the Queensland Gold Coast, provides a case study of a resort region experiencing similar transformations to those noted in Honolulu, Miami and Sitges, Spain. These cities have pursued broader socioeconomic resilience rather than the common strategy of simply expanding or improving their tourism appeal. The City of Pittsburgh planned to replace its existing 40,000 street lighting fixtures with LED fixtures and engaged the Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) to investigate the full range of potential benefits of a replacement program in business districts. The study team investigated the technological potentials offered by LED lighting, best management practices (BMP) in LED lighting and lessons learned from cities where LED lighting has been installed, as well as the place-making and aesthetic impact of LED lighting and associated technologies.
