The Microfoundations Of Distance: Insights From Psychology To Expand The Notion Of Psychic Distance, Laetitia Em Dec 2014

The Microfoundations Of Distance: Insights From Psychology To Expand The Notion Of Psychic Distance, Laetitia Em

Laetitia EM

Many studies have focused on the impact of cultural differences between a host and a home environment on macro outcomes such as firms’ strategies and performance. However little attention has been paid towards the microprocesses underlying this relationship. How those differences translate into the minds of decision makers and then affect the way they perceive distances and thus the decisions they make accordingly remains vastly understudied. We suggest here to consider that cultural differences are an input of psychic distance, and to treat psychic distance as a dynamic, subjective, and cognitive process, occurring at the individual level. This theoretical paper aims …

Dss Use And Organizational Performance - Revisiting The Relationship, Abhijith Anand, Rajiv Kohli, Rajeev Sharma Dec 2014

Dss Use And Organizational Performance - Revisiting The Relationship, Abhijith Anand, Rajiv Kohli, Rajeev Sharma

Abhijith Anand

This research contributes to the literature on the antecedents of information systems (IS) use. Drawing from the management control systems literature, we argue that organizational performance is an important antecedent of IS use. Specifically, we argue that periods of performance decline are followed by increased use of decision support systems as managers try to diagnose the causes of performance decline. This offers an alternative perspective to prior literature that has primarily hypothesized a positive effect of IS use on organizational performance. Longitudinal data collected from a healthcare organization for a 5-year period is analyzed using distributed lag models. As hypothesized, …

How The Usage Of It Is Effecting Academic Libraries, Mohammed J. Sarwar

Mohammed J Sarwar

The purpose of this treatise is to determine how information technology is affecting the usage of services in the academic library. Various studies suggest that there has been a decline in usage of traditional face-to-face reference services. The majority of the college students prefer to use the Web instead of frequenting the library. Librarians and educators are concerned that these students are developing poor research skills if they only use the internet for research. Many of them are not familiar with the best electronic resources. Librarians may have less reference work but they will need to offer instruction on using …

The Internet Of Things And Wearable Technology: Addressing Privacy And Security Concerns Without Derailing Innovation, Adam D. Thierer

Adam Thierer

This paper highlights some of the opportunities presented by the rise of the so-called “Internet of Things” and wearable technology in particular, and encourages policymakers to allow these technologies to develop in a relatively unabated fashion. As with other new and highly disruptive digital technologies, however, the Internet of Things and wearable tech will challenge existing social, economic, and legal norms. In particular, these technologies raise a variety of privacy and safety concerns. Other technical barriers exist that could hold back IoT and wearable tech — including disputes over technical standards, system interoperability, and access to adequate spectrum to facilitate …

These wetlands are the common property resource and under different management regimes. These wetlands are under various management regimes, i.e., private management (individuals and groups), fishermen cooperative management, Community-based fisheries management (decentralized management, Government works as facilitator) and open access. Most of the unregistered beels …

Exchange Rate, Market Size And Human Capital Nexus Foreign Direct Investment – A Bound Testing Approach For Pakistan, Naveed Iqbal Chaudhry, Mian Saqib Mehmood, Asif Mehmood, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba

Mian Saqib Mehmood

This study investigates the role of exchange rate, market size and human capital for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). In this regard, time series data on annual basis has been collected for the period 1985–2010 and an Augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF) and Phillips–Perron (PP) unit root tests are utilized to determine the stationarity of the variables. An autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach to co-integration was applied as all the variables in the model are first level stationary, e.g. I(1). The empirical findings of this study confirm the long run relationship among the variables. However, market size and human capital …

Is Food Marketing Making Us Fat? Fat Cats Vs Dogmatists., Stephen S. Holden Jul 2014

Is Food Marketing Making Us Fat? Fat Cats Vs Dogmatists., Stephen S. Holden

Stephen S Holden

For many, it seems obvious that food marketing is making us fat. The anger and outrage that was once evoked by tobacco companies is now being repackaged and aimed at ‘Big Food’ (Hennessy, 2014). But is it justified, is food marketing the cause of obesity? And in any case, does outrage and dogmatism help solve the problem? This paper suggests that blaming the marketers, both Big Food and "lazy leisure", is a disputable claim, and dangerously shifts responsibility from individuals to external agents.
