Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The study will use scores on TASP, and ACT as predictors of first year college success. First year college success will be measured by first-year year college grade point average and number of class hours dropped. We expect to find a high correlation between standardized test scores and college success. In order to continue yearly state test administration efforts, data needs to be found supporting that these efforts are sufficient. If this evidence is not present, then state mandated achievement testing needs to be reconsidered for use as a requirement for receipt of a high school diploma, school accountability, and …

Teaching Fractions, Natalie Miles Dec 2004

Teaching Fractions, Natalie Miles

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Because fractions are a vital part of mathematics instruction in schools and can be found in real life, it is important that all students understand and be able to utilize them. Teachers should choose strategies that will work best for their individual students, taking into account the various ways their students learn and the fraction knowledge students already possess. To effectively teach fractions, teachers must find ways to prompt student interest. Teachers can accomplish this through the use of technology. games. and manipulatives. Effective teachers must take into account the cultural diversity of their students. Teachers must be able to …

It's a thorough assessment of the press' influence on Nigeria's socio-economic and political development, as well as the suitability of its tactics and posturing toward attaining its set goals of economic and political emancipation of Nigerians. Most importantly, this study …

Active Learning (4): Is Cooperative/Collaborative Learning A Self-Less Pursuit?, Pandeli M. Glavanis Dr.

Faculty Journal Articles

The immediate answer to the question is a very definite and emphatic NO. In fact the rest of this short essay will argue that as all forms of social cooperation are based on some type of self-interest thus, cooperative/collaborative learning is also anything but altruistic. Nevertheless, I will also argue that it is precisely because self-interest is embedded in all forms of cooperative/collaborative learning that it enables this style of learning to lead to an interactive and constructivist approach to learning, i.e. active learning. The logic of the argument once again derives from established social theory and in particular the …

The predecessor of the Wildlife Services program within the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, was founded by C. Hart Merriam in 1885 with a Congressional appropriation of $5,000. These funds were used to organize a Section of Economic Ornithology as part of the Entomology Division of USDA. Merriam immediately hired longtime friend A. K. Fisher to be his assistant and the two shared a clerk. The new Section proved to be so popular with farmers and politicians that the Congress created a separate Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammalogy in 1886. The Commissioner of Agriculture …

Active Learning (3): Three Easy Pieces, Aziza Ellozy Dr. Oct 2004

Active Learning (3): Three Easy Pieces, Aziza Ellozy Dr.

Faculty Journal Articles

One of the most common obstacles in introducing active learning in the classroom, is the perception that it takes away from the lecture. The typical 40+ contact hours that a professor has with his/her students during a semester are usually considered to be barely enough to cover the “content” of the course. Yet thanks to excellent classroom research (McKeachie et al., 1990) we know a great deal about how learning happens, and not much of it will be happening in the classroom unless students are actively engaged.
