A Theoretical Model For Biased Superlattice Devices, Michael Ferner

Theses

A model describing the subband structures and tunneling characteristics of superlattices is presented. The model solves the envelope function equations by the transfer matrix technique. The results are codified in a Fortran program, and the model is applied to several structures.

Superlattice have been studied extensively, however many new structures await investigation.

This model is presented as a preliminary design tool. The program allows a designer to do preliminary calculations. This type of investigation guides a designer toward a goal by making possible a large number of calculations on many different structures.

The bow and arrow is a tool with a very long history. In the Old World its use dates back to paleolithic times, with firm evidence in the form of arrow shafts dated to the early ninth millennium b.c. (McEwen, Miller, & Bergman, 1991). More tenuous evidence from projectile points in Africa may push that back as far as 11000 b.c. (Blitz, 1988). The focus of this paper, however, will be the adoption and subsequent use of the bow in the Great Basin region of the West.

A mathematical model is developed and utilized to analyze turbomachine cascade flutter and forced response. The flutter boundary, defined as the largest value of reduced frequency at which flutter occurs for a given cascade, was evaluated for single degree of freedom torsional oscillation as well as coupled bending and torsional oscillations. The maximum amplitude of forced response in bending and torsion was also considered. The unsteady aerodynamic lift and moment coefficients were determined from unsteady aerodynamic flow models for subsonic flow, supersonic flow with a subsonic axial component and supersonic axial flow. Bulk and thin film samples of Bi₂₋[subscript x]Pb[subscript x]Sr₂Ca₂Cu₃O[subscript y] compounds were prepared by suitable methods. The thin film and bulk samples were exposed to argon gas at temperatures of about 2000 °C and pressures of about 300 atm. in a ballistic compressor (BC) and then cooled at a rate of about 10⁵ °C/sec. The samples before and after this treatment were examined and compared using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) , and an x-ray diffractometer (XRD). This study demonstrates that a computer-based instructional design format is appropriate for novice air traffic control (ATC) training. The computer presents the student with small amounts of information in tutorial and drill and practice sequences that necessitate student interactivity. The student is then periodically audit tested to ascertain mastery of the subject matter. The result of these mid-lesson evaluations serve as a self-check so that the student can assess his/her progress in the learning cycle. Jan Tschichold was a brilliant typographer who dramatically influenced graphic design and printing with his contrasting theories of design. He began as a proponent of the so-called "new typography" and then pursued the revival of more traditional styles. Because Tschichold's diametrically opposed theories about typography continue to appeal to a large audience, this exhibit of his evolution as a typographer is useful and important. This exhibit is an overview of his writings and typography concentrating on his dramatic stylistic changes. The exhibit is accompanied by a poster, annotated catalog, and descriptive labels.

The classical capacitance voltage characteristics based on the depletion approximation, is adequate at reverse bias, but introduces errors at high forward bias. Because of its inherent simplicity and compactness this classical depletion model is well studied and widely used in circuit simulators. In this work, a new model for the semiconductor space charge region (SCR) capacitance, based on physical justification, will be derived. This new model takes three input parameters, C0 , Vbi and m, thus eliminating the fitting parameter FC currently used in SPICE. During the late 1970s and early 1980s the Department of Anthropology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville conducted an inventory and assessment of archaeological resources potentially affected by the proposed Columbia Reservoir on the Duck River in Middle Tennessee. Two environmental subdivisions of the Nashville Basin were present in the reservoir area: the patchy Inner Basin and the more homogeneous Outer Basin. As the majority of the archaeological material found was referable to the Middle and Late Archaic Periods, the research design focused on an investigation of Archaic adaptation in this environmentally variable landscape.

Field, greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate whole plant and cellular response of wild garlic to thifensulfuron-methyl.

Thifensulfuron-methyl activity on wild garlic was evaluated as influenced by rate and time of application, antagonism and sequential application. Phytotoxicity to small grains was also assessed. Thifensulfuron-methyl at 9 g ai ha⁻¹ was the lowest rate observed that suppressed aerial bulblet production greater than 90% when compared to the standard treatment of 2,4-D. Suppression was greatest at the 35 g ai ha⁻¹ applied in late March to early April. The lowest rate for reduction of underground bulbs was 35 g ai …

Flavobacterium aurantiacum (Exiguobacterium aurantiacum) has been shown to remove aflatoxins from solution, although the mechanism for this elimination is not known in detail. This investigation was undertaken to determine substrate specificity and inducibility of aflatoxin degrading activity in F. aurantiacum cultures. Finally, the cellular fraction exhibiting aflatoxin degrading activity was isolated.

Cells were preincubated for 24 h in 5.0 and 0.5 μg/ml of aflatoxin B₁ (AB₁) to serve as an induced inoculum. The induced inoculum was compared to noninduced cells grown in tryptic soy broth only. AB₁ removal of initial concentrations of 4.0 and 2.0 μg/ml …

This study used acoustic emission (AE) signal parameters to isolate the failure mechanisms in a 0° unidirectional, fiberglass/epoxy tensile test specimen. Since several failure mechanisms were known to be present, the lack of any distinctly identifiable bands in the original amplitude distribution indicated that there was considerable overlap between the AE signals of the various failure mechanisms. In order to separate the amplitude bands associated with each mechanism, it was necessary to sort on the duration of the AE signal. Of increasing importance in structural design is the use of fiber-reinforced polymeric composite material, notably in advanced aircraft and projectiles. These applications expose the materials to varied environmental conditions, therefore the material performance under these conditions is of great interest. One aspect of this is the solution of the dynamic response of a composite structure under elevated temperature and moisture conditions. An exact solution is formulated which describes the hygrothermal effects due to heating and moisture diffusion on one surface of a symmetric cross-ply plate made of AS/3501 graphite epoxy with simply-supported boundary conditions.

A follow up study was used to analyze changes in academic test results. The Purpose of this study was to investigate the human experience of regret in order to discover and describe the essential nature of the experience. A phenomenological approach was taken, employing a dialogical interview method. Twelve participants volunteered for an unstructured, open-ended interview in which they were asked to describe their personal experiences of regret.

Analysis of the interview transcripts by thematizing significant statements revealed three essential themes of the experience of regret. The experience of regret is comprised of opportunities/consequences, blaming oneself, and looking back/looking forward.

The project was designed to measure a reciprocating engine fluid flow (blowby gases past the piston rings) using a laser doppler velocimeter (LDV). Blowby gases were obtained by introducing compressed air into an engine cylinder (piston held at TDC) to simulate engine combustion pressures. Beginning the proposed research included starting an LDV/reciprocating engine laboratory at Western Michigan University and determining the limits of the measurement devices (LDV system in particular).

Timber shortage will result in loss of foreign exchange, retrenchment of timber workers, inflate prices and depress construction and housing industries. Compensatory Forest Plantation Program (CFPP) is one of the methods taken by the Malaysian Government to avert this impending crisis. CFPP was officially launched in 1983, in four States of Peninsular Malaysia. By 1989, forest plantations totaling 36,874 hectares were established. Effects of vestibular stimulation, when presented prior to language therapy, on expressive language abilities in pre-school children with Down syndrome were examined. Two subjects participated; one subject completed the study. Vestibular stimulation was therapist- and child-initiated and provided by various types of equipment. The subject's expressive language use (verbal and non-verbal) was videotaped during fifteen minutes of language therapy across a six-week, eleven-session period.

Results of this study indicate that expressive language use increased or improved across many parameters during the vestibular stimulation phase of the study. The subject displayed greatest gains in the use of multiple word utterances and …
