A Theoretical Model For Biased Superlattice Devices, Michael Ferner

Theses

A model describing the subband structures and tunneling characteristics of superlattices is presented. The model solves the envelope function equations by the transfer matrix technique. The results are codified in a Fortran program, and the model is applied to several structures.

Superlattice have been studied extensively, however many new structures await investigation.

This model is presented as a preliminary design tool. The program allows a designer to do preliminary calculations. This type of investigation guides a designer toward a goal by making possible a large number of calculations on many different structures.

Theses

Jan Tschichold was a brilliant typographer who dramatically influenced graphic design and printing with his contrasting theories of design. He began as a proponent of the so-called "new typography" and then pursued the revival of more traditional styles. Because Tschichold's diametrically opposed theories about typography continue to appeal to a large audience, this exhibit of his evolution as a typographer is useful and important. This exhibit is an overview of his writings and typography concentrating on his dramatic stylistic changes. The exhibit is accompanied by a poster, annotated catalog, and descriptive labels.

Suprem-Ii Analysis Of The Phosphorus Planar Diffusion Source Ph 1000n, Paul M. Whalen

The phosphorus planar diffusion source, PH-1000N, was used to test the ability of the process simulation program SUPREM-H to accommodate solid source diffusion. Spreading resistance analysis and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) were used to determine the impurity concentration profiles of phosphorus diffused into p-type silicon. Sheet resistance and junction depth data, in addition to the impurity concentration profiles, were plotted against the respective data generated by SUPREM. The surface gas concentration, a parameter requested by SUPREM's input file, was found to have the strongest influence on the program's output. The application of the four-color process to printing fine line work found on topographical maps was investigated. A description of the mapping process is included and the reason why the four-color process would be advantageous to cartographic printing was discussed. The chapter on fourcolor process theory was included for the benefit of the cartographic community - The experimental design for data transfer, color tolerance, target design to match spot and process color, as well as color space employed, were reviewed. The predominant integrated circuit fabrication technologies used for VLSI devices are CMOS, and BiCMOS. The goal of this work was to develop a CMOS process that could be converted into a BiCMOS technology. For this reason an N-Well CMOS process was selected, and fabricated in the Microelectronic Engineering clean room. This paper reviews the test chip design, process simulation, fabrication, and electrical characterization of this process. The device fabrication was successful, and the electrical testing clearly indicated what measures need to be taken to improve the process.

Thin Film Transistors have been fabricated in 0.2 urn thick polycrystalline silicon. NMOS and PMOS devices were fabricated on four groups of substrates. One group was processed with as deposited polysilicon and three of the substrates received high dose implants of Si and/or Ge prior to anneal. The Si implants were designed to amorphize the film by a process known as Seed Selection through Ion Channeling (SSIC), and the Ge was implanted just below the surface to enhance transistor characteristics. Two of the groups, one which received Ge implanted just below the surface and the other no implant at all, …

A method has been devised for performing edge operations with various edge operators under varying imaging conditions and for quantitatively comparing the results of each edge operator. Both computer-simulated targets and real targets are employed, and experiments in both cases showed that the Sobel operator and Kirsch Compass Gradient Mask are better than the Highpass and Laplacian filters in the performance of edge operation.

Numerous posterior stabilized knee systems are available for primary and revision total knee arthroplasty. Design of these systems requires an understanding of the articulating geometries and kinematic/kinetic biomechanical considerations of the normal knee. The findings for the normal knee are integrated into the design of a prosthetic system.

The natural femoral, tibial and patella articulating geometries are defined to enable subsequent kinematic and kinetic analyses. The articulating geometries are characterized from review of anthropometric studies of the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joint.

A methodology for Cost Deployment based on Quality Function Deployment (QFD) architecture is developed and explained. Following a comprehensive review of Quality Function Deployment terminology and composition, a house-of-quality is developed, and matrix correlation methodologies are discussed. Current applications are presented to illustrate the scope and adaptability of this quality assurance tool. In addition, an exercise in product design and review is conducted to illustrate a unique approach to cost deployment. This study presents a methodological approach for finding an optimal design of bus transit service in an urban transportation corridor with elastic demand and under various objective functions. Service design decision variables to be optimized include the route length, route density, headway, number of stops and stop spacing pattern. The objective functions that optimize the transit system design include: minimizing operator cost, maximizing profit, minimizing sum of operator and user costs and maximizing the users' net benefits.

Availability of alternate routes are shown to enhance the performance of non-hierarchical circuit switched networks at moderate load conditions on which the networks typically operate. But alternate routes introduce instability at heavy and overloaded conditions and at these load conditions the network performance is found to deteriorate. To alleviate this problem, one of the control mechanism used is to reserve a fraction of the capacity of each link for direct routed calls. Over the last decade, interest has grown in the use of the scanning acoustic microscope (SAM), with a single lens being used for both transmitting and receiving the acoustic signal. A major objective of this thesis was to determine if the transmission and ultrasonic techniques yield similar "quantitative" results, when measuring the elastic constants of human femoral bone. The transmission technique has been used since 1970 to yield values for the elastic properties of calcified tissue. Mineralization Of 2-Chlorophenol Using A Hollow Fiber Ultrafiltration System In Combination With A Reactor Containing An Immobilized White Rot Fungus, Sheau-Ming Tung

Phanerochaete chrysosporium, a white rot fungus was immobilized on a packed-bed reactor, and was used to mineralize an aqueous stream contaminated with 50 ppm of 2-chlorophenol. Hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes (for 5,000 daltons and 10,000 daltons molecular weight cut-oft) were utilized to retain the extracellular enzyme resulting from the immobilized fungus in a recirculation loop outside of the reactor.

It was found here that the concentration of proteins (roughly proportional to the extracellular enzyme releasd by the fungus) does not correlate with the rate of degradation of 2-chlorophenol in the system. The protein was concentrated 1.5 fold in the recycle …

A novel heterogeneous catalytic-oxidation technology where activated carbon is used as a catalyst-adsorbent, ozone serves as the oxidant and UV light as activation agent, is developed in a lab scale study. We demonstrate this process for destruction of recalcitrant organics in water i.e: combined oxidation by ozone, UV light plus activated carbon. The investigation includes evalution of various operating conditions: ozone levels, activated carbon levels; time for complete destruction of the individual target pollutants, plus evalution of activity of the continuously recativated carbon surface in-situ. Evaluation of Distributed Sensor Networks (DSN's) for optimal detection using Bayesian cost formulation methods has been the objective of several studies. There have been a few studies on DSN evaluation using an information theoretic approach, wherein an assymetric channel models a detector. We look at the multi-sensor system at the receiver as a black-box and model it as an assymetric channel whose cross over probabilities depend on the probabilties of detection and of false alarm. This study evaluates thermoformed trays as used in the food service industry. The resin used in fabricating trays is a blend of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Polycarbonate (PC).
