We have utilized active immunization against growth hormone releasing factor (GRF) to investigate relationships among somatotropin (ST), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), IGF binding proteins (IGFBP) and ovarian function in heifers. Active immunization against GRF (GRFi) has been demonstrated to abolish episodic release of ST and decrease serum concentrations of IGF-I. In initial experiments investigating onset of puberty, breeds of heifers differing in growth rate and reproductive traits (Angus, Charolais and Simmental) were immunized against GRF or served as controls (immunized against carrier protein, human serum albumin, HSAi). GRFi decreased rate of muscle and skeletal growth, but increased deposition of adipose …
Intergovernmental Competition, Voice And Exit Options And The Design Of Fiscal Structure, Michael L. Marlow
Intergovernmental Competition, Voice And Exit Options And The Design Of Fiscal Structure, Michael L. Marlow
Economics
Taxpayers may reveal their assessment of policy through exercise of available voice and exit options within the fiscal constitution. The voice option is utilized when taxpayers remain within political boundaries and attempt to communicate their assessments regarding the institutionalstatus quo to policymakers. Exercise of the exit option occurs when taxpayers signal discontent with thestatus quo by purchasing from another government supplier. This paper discusses and contrasts theconventional andconstitutional economics views toward fiscal design and argues that a major difference exists regarding the issue of who should be awarded primary responsibility in the policy process: taxpayers or policymakers? Because voice and …
Moment-Based Minimax Stopping Functions For Sequences Of Random Variables, Frans A. Boshuizen, Theodore P. Hill
Moment-Based Minimax Stopping Functions For Sequences Of Random Variables, Frans A. Boshuizen, Theodore P. Hill
Research Scholars in Residence
Minimax-optimal stopping times and minimax (worst-case) distributions are found for the problem of stopping a sequence of uniformly bounded independent random variables, when only the means and/or variances are known, in contrast to the classical setting where the complete joint distributions of the random variables are known. Results are obtained for both the independent and i.i.d. cases, with applications given to the problem of order section in optimal stopping.
Elucidation Of The Complete Azorhizobium Nicotinate Catabolism Pathway, Christopher Kitts, Jerome P. Lapointe, Van Thai Lam, Robert A. Ludwig
Elucidation Of The Complete Azorhizobium Nicotinate Catabolism Pathway, Christopher Kitts, Jerome P. Lapointe, Van Thai Lam, Robert A. Ludwig
Biological Sciences
A complete pathway for Azorhizobium caulinodans nicotinate catabolism has been determined from mutant phenotype analyses, isolation of metabolic intermediates, and structural studies. Nicotinate serves as a respiratory electron donor to O2 via a membrane-bound hydroxylase and a specific c-type cytochrome oxidase. The resulting oxidized product, 6-hydroxynicotinate, is next reduced to 1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-6-oxonicotinate. Hydrolytic ring breakage follows, with release of pyridine N as ammonium. Decarboxylation then releases the nicotinate C-7 carboxyl group as CO2, and the remaining C skeleton is then oxidized to yield glutarate. Transthioesterification with succinyl coenzyme A (succinyl-CoA) yields glutaryl-CoA, which is then oxidatively decarboxylated to …

The Expression Pattern Of The Tonoplast Intrinsic Protein Γ-Tip In Arabidopsis Thaliana Is Correlated With Cell Enlargement, Edward Himelblau, Herman Hofte, Dolors Ludevid, Maarten J. Chrispeels
The Expression Pattern Of The Tonoplast Intrinsic Protein Γ-Tip In Arabidopsis Thaliana Is Correlated With Cell Enlargement, Edward Himelblau, Herman Hofte, Dolors Ludevid, Maarten J. Chrispeels
Biological Sciences
The vacuolar membrane (tonoplast) contains an abundant intrinsic protein with six membrane-spanning domains that is encoded by a small gene family. Different isoforms of tonoplast intrinsic protein (TIP) are expressed in different tissues or as a result of specific signals. Using promoter-β-glucuronidase (GUS) fusions and in situ hybridization, we have examined the expression of γ-TIP in Arabidopsis thaliana. GUS staining of plants transformed with promoter-GUS fusions showed that γ-TIP gene expression is high in recently formed tissues of young roots. In the shoot, γ-TIP gene expression was highest in the vascular bundles of stems and petioles, as well as …

Nonstandard And Standard Compactifications Of Ordered Topological Spaces, Sergio Salbany, Todor D. Todorov
Nonstandard And Standard Compactifications Of Ordered Topological Spaces, Sergio Salbany, Todor D. Todorov
Mathematics
We construct the Nachbin ordered compactification and the ordered realcompactification, a notion defined in the paper, of a given ordered topological space as nonstandard ordered hulls. The maximal ideals in the algebras of the differences of monotone continuous functions are completely described. We give also a characterization of the class of completely regular ordered spaces which are closed subspaces of products of copies of the ordered real line, answering a question of T.H. Choe and Y.H. Hong. The methods used are topological (standard) and nonstandard.

Model For The Infrastructure Of Engineering Education, James G. Harris, Karen Frair, Win Aung, Susan T. Hill
Electrical Engineering
There are many ways to describe and model physical systems. The infrastructure of engineering education in the United States is an example of such a system, and it is the intent of this report to describe and model this infratructure. The means for doing this starts with the graduation statistics for the year 1989 given by the Computer Aided Science Policy Analysis & Research Database System (CASPAR) developed for the National Science Foundation by Quantum Research Corporation [1], and uses a simple categorization for the institutions that contribute to those statistics. This categorization sorts the post -secondary institutions in the …
