Family Transformations And The Well-Being Of Children: Recent Evidence From Canadian Longitudinal Data, Don Kerr
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This paper uses longitudinal data to examine negative child outcomes among young children in Canada. In following a cohort of children as they move through their early elementary school years, a slight decline in hyperactivity is documented, as is a slight increase in internalizing difficulties. After introducing a longitudinal dimension to our analysis, both family structure and income poverty are found to have a weaker effect on child outcomes than was initially anticipated. The current analysis also demonstrates the utility of LISREL’s “weighted least squares” estimation procedure in the development of structural equation models while working with ordinal and/or censored …

A Longitudinal Investigation Of Information Processing And Cognitive Organization In Clinical Depression: Stability Of Schematic Interconnectedness., D J Dozois, K S Dobson
Psychology Publications
This study longitudinally investigated information processing and cognitive organization in clinical depression. The main hypothesis was that individuals whose depression had remitted would show a significant cognitive shift on information processing (e.g., deactivation of negative processing) but not on cognitive organizational tasks, Forty-five individuals with clinical depression completed 2 information processing and 2 cognitive organizational tasks at initial assessment. At 6-month follow-up, the sample (23 remitted, 22 stable depressed) was readministered the tasks. As expected, information processing shifted significantly in individuals who had improved symptomatically, whereas negative cognitive organizational indices remained stable. The implications of these results are discussed as …

The use of culture media to support the development of preimplantation embryos to the blastocyst stage is often associated with detrimental effects on normal development. These effects have been uncovered largely by investigating the phenotypic abnormalities displayed by fetuses and newborns derived from cultured preimplantation embryos. Research to understand the impact of culture on the embryonic developmental programme has focused on embryo metabolism, gene expression and genomic imprinting. We have used differential display RT-PCR to examine culture influences on global transcript pools in bovine embryos. Others have examined culture influences on candidate "marker genes" in cultured murine, ovine and bovine …
Component-Based Software Development, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Miriam Capretz, Dahai Li
Component-Based Software Development, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Miriam Capretz, Dahai Li
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Component-based software development (CBSD) strives to achieve a set of pre-built, standardized software components available to fit a specific architectural style for some application domain; the application is then assembled using these components. Component-based software reusability will be at the forefront of software development technology in the next few years. This paper describes a software life cycle that supports component-based development under an object-oriented framework. Development time versus software life cycle phases, which is an important assessment of the component-based development model put forward, is also mentioned.
Missing Data In Quantitative Social Research, S. Obeng-Manu Gyimah
Missing Data In Quantitative Social Research, S. Obeng-Manu Gyimah
PSC Discussion Papers Series
Almost invariably, the data available to the social scientist display one or more characteristics of missing information. Even though reasons for non response are varied, most frequently, they reflect the unwillingness of respondents to provide information on undesirable social behaviours and on issues considered as private. Besides these, sloppy research designs often leads to ambiguous and poorly structured survey questions which provide a recipe for low response. Longitudinal surveys also suffer from incompleteness due to attrition resulting from death and emigration, while in retrospective surveys, memory effect might be a major source of non-response.
While there is no consensus among …

Critical Analysis Of Cerebrovascular Autoregulation During Repeated Head-Up Tilt., R L Hughson, M R Edwards, D D O'Leary, J K Shoemaker
Kinesiology Publications
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebrovascular autoregulation has been described with a phase lead of cerebral blood flow preceding changes in cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), but there has been less focus on the effect of CPP on cerebral vascular resistance. We investigated these relations during spontaneous fluctuations (control) and repeated head-up tilt.
METHODS: Eight healthy adults were studied in supine rest and repeated tilt with 10-second supine, 10 seconds at 45 degrees head-up tilt for a total of 12 cycles. Cerebral blood flow was estimated from mean flow velocity (MFV) by transcranial Doppler ultrasound, CPP was estimated from corrected finger pressure (CPP(F)), …

Discrimination Of Computer-Graphic Stimuli By Mice: A Method For The Behavioral Characterization Of Transgenic And Gene-Knockout Models., T J Bussey, L M Saksida, L A Rothblat
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
An automated method is described for the behavioral testing of mice in an apparatus that allows computer-graphic stimulus material to be presented. Mice responded to these stimuli by making a nose-poke toward a computer monitor that was equipped with a touchscreen attachment for detecting responses. It was found that C57BL/6 mice were able to solve single-pair visual discriminations as well as 3-pair concurrent visual discriminations. The finding that mice are capable of complex visual discriminations introduces the possibility of testing mice on nonspatial tasks that are similar to those used with rats, monkeys, and humans. Furthermore, the method seems particularly …

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications
Expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) receptor 2 (EP2) are necessary for rodent cumulus expansion in vivo. Prostaglandin E(2) receptor 3 (EP3) has been detected in bovine preovulatory follicles and corpora lutea. The current experiments examined the effect of PGE(2) on bovine cumulus expansion in vitro and expression of COX-2, EP1, EP2, EP3, and EP4 mRNAs in bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) at 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24 h time points during maturation in vitro. Concentrations of PGE(2) above 50 ng/ml resulted in moderate cumulus expansion of bovine COCs, but expansion did not occur in the absence of …

Local Solutions For County-Wide Amalgamation: Factors For Success And Failure, Linda Dean
MPA Major Research Papers
This paper examines local solutions for amalgamation in Ontario by conducting a comparative case study of the County of Brant’s success at amalgamation and the County of Dufferin’s failed efforts towards amalgamation. The findings reveal that the factors that contribute to the outcome of local amalgamation decisions include the loss of identity associated with municipal mergers, the assimilation of individual communities, and the blurring of each community’s distinct characteristics into one homogenous mass.

Spirituality In Late Adulthood, Lisa M. Heintz, Imants Barušs
Psychology
MacDonald's Expressions of Spirituality Inventory was used to examine spirituality in late adulthood using a sample of 30 people (22 women, 8 men) whose mean age was 72.6 yr. While average scores are higher on scales measuring spiritual and religious beliefs and practices for the sample than for a standardization group of undergraduate students with a mean age of 21.0 yr., means are lower on scales measuring paranormal beliefs. Low scores on death anxiety are correlated only with Existential Well-being and age. And, while some religious behaviors such as frequent religious practice, prayer, and church attendance are correlated with some …

Beyond Librarianship: Are Librarians Becoming Isolated In The New Information Age?, Margaret Ann Wilkinson, Roma Harris
Law Publications
This paper continues a series exploring the perceptions of entering university students about the roles of librarians and others. A model developed by Elizabeth Graddy, suggesting that the extent to which an occupation receives legal sanction reflects the public's perception of its social relevance, is tested. While Graddy's focus on the relationships between occupations and the public, rather on conditions within various professions, is reinforced as predicting an occupation's ability to meet the challenges of a changing society, the data from this study demonstrate more predictive variables than those identified by Graddy. A more complex view of the future of …
Regulation Of Blastocyst Formation., A J Watson, L C Barcroft
Regulation Of Blastocyst Formation., A J Watson, L C Barcroft
Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications
Preimplantation or pre-attachment development encompasses the "free"-living period of mammalian embryogenesis, which directs development of the zygote through to the blastocyst stage. Blastocyst formation is essential for implantation, establishment of pregnancy and is a principal determinant of embryo quality prior to embryo transfer. Cavitation (blastocyst formation) is driven by the expression of specific sets of gene products that direct the acquisition of cell polarity within the trophectoderm, which is both the first epithelium of development and the outer cell layer encircling the inner cell mass of the blastocyst. Critical gene families controlling these events include: the E-cadherin-catenin cell adhesion family, …

Child Morbidity In Kenya: Does Women’S Status Matter?, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This paper utilises data on women from the 1998 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey to examine the conditions under which children under the age of five remain healthy or become ill with three fatal diseases, namely, malaria, diarrhea, and acute respiratory infection. The major objective of the paper was to identify the principal determinants of child morbidity and to pinpoint possible areas where current health programmes could be improved to secure greater child survival. Logistic regression is applied on the data to examine the relationship between women status as indicated by various social and economic factors and the morbidity status …

Family Relations, Low Income And Child Outcomes: A Comparison Of Canadian Children In Intact, Step And Lone Parent Families, Don Kerr, Roderic Beaujot
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This paper examines conditions that are more likely to lead to positive or negative child outcomes in intact, female lone parent and reconstituted families. Family type is found to be more important than low income in predicting a set of behavioural, emotional and psychological difficulties. After establishing measurement equivalence across family types, multiple group analysis using structural equation modelling shows that the explanatory factors also operate differently in the various family settings. In particular, low income has a significant impact on childhood difficulties in lone parent and stepfamilies, but not in intact families. Family functioning has less impact on children’s …

Earning And Caring: Demographic Change And Policy Implications, Roderic Beaujot
PSC Discussion Papers Series
Seeking to define families as groups of people who share earning and caring activities, we contrast theoretical orientations that see advantages to a division of labour or complementary roles, in comparison to orientations that see less risk and greater companionship in a collaborative model based on sharing paid and unpaid work, or co-providing and co-parenting.
It is important to look both inside and outside of families, or at the changing gendered links between earning and caring, to understand change both in families and in the work world. It is proposed that equal opportunity by gender has advanced further in the …

Parathyroid hormone related protein (PTHrP) and its receptor have well-established roles in the development and regulation of many tissues, including bone and mammary gland. The objectives of this study were: (1) to characterize the distribution of mRNAs encoding parathyroid hormone (PTH)-related protein (PTHrP) and receptor (PTHR) in bovine ovary; (2) to characterize the distribution of PTHrP and PTHR polypeptides in bovine ovary; (3) to examine the influences of PTHrP (1-141) treatment during bovine oocyte maturation in vitro on blastocyst development. mRNAs encoding PTHrP and PTHR were detected by in situ hybridization methods in oocytes, and granulosa cells in all follicles …
Governing Municipalities In A Dual Context: An Examination Of Urban Indian Reserve Creation Under Article 9 Of The Saskatchewan Treaty Land Entitlement Framework Agreement, Wesley Stevenson
MPA Major Research Papers
This paper examines the Saskatchewan Treaty Land Entitlement Framework Agreement (TLEFA) in an attempt to demonstrate that although it did not provide a full prescription for municipal land to be turned into reserve land, the framework agreement still remains relevant. A survey of municipalities and First Nations bands that have experience in urban reserve creation under the TLEFA was conducted. The findings reveal that there are several insights and lessons to be learned from the creation of urban reserves in Saskatchewan, emphasizing the continued significance of the TLEFA.
