The study aims to clarify and understand the role that gender has on perceptions of justice through placement of blame and emotion. The Appraisal Tendency Framework explains how emotion impacts judgements, and the fairness theory explores how blame placement affects perceptions of justice. This research explores the impact of gender on both models. This study will utilize a 2 (emotional induction) x 2 (gender of actor) design. In the emotional induction portion, participants will view clips from movies to induce either sadness or anger. Following the video clip, all participants will be asked to write about a time they either …

Even though the percentage might be relatively small, when looking at the collective number on a national level, it means that a large population of children are affected.

HIV is a critical problem among the incarcerated population. As of 2014, African Americans disproportionately made up 2.3 million of the 6.8 million correctional population. People of the correctional population are more susceptible to a decrease of CD4 cells (cells that kill the HIV virus). African Americans are at an elevated risk of HIV vs. everyone else in the correctional population.

Before starting, I suspected that women would be more motivated to take this survey than men. This was based on the research I did involving the different ways males are motivated versus females.

After discussing experiences with Title IX with students at ERAU, it is apparent that there is a negative connotation among university students with this program. The queer rights movement is often assumed to have advanced because of the collateral benefit of other social rights movements occurring around the same time, in the 1950s and 60s. However, the inception of an organized queer rights movement did not happen in line with any progressive time in United States public thought. This paper explores the pivotal role of race in the South's political switch. In 1968, Nixon won the Presidential Election with very slim margins. Four years later, with when running for his second term, he won all the vast majority of the vote, including those from Southern states. By catering to Southern voters on issues such as welfare, desegregation, and crime, Nixon was able to gain Southern support, and secure a new base for the Republican party.

Prior to the American Revolutionary War (1775-1883), tensions rose as American colonial smugglers circumvented British taxes. By the onset of the conflict, Continental General George Washington faced a daunting British military invasion. Washington's strategy to outmaneuver and tire enemy forces necessitated a way to anticipate incoming attacks. Thus, he looked to espionage, but found few colonists with professional experience. So who would have the deceptive skills to fulfill the task? An exploration of Washington’s dilemma provides compelling evidence explaining how the colonial smugglers who started the war became the Patriot spies who ended it.

The Impact Of Social Influences On Msum Students' Decision To Go To College, Jenna Ellertson

With a cultural image that portrays a “college for all” mantra, there are a variety of measures that may be impactful on one’s decision to go to college. This paper focuses on Minnesota State University Moorhead students’ narratives around social influences and pressure to continue their education through the means of a four-year degree. It was found that areas of social impact were based on the influences of family, friends, media, and the American dream in relation to one’s self-identity and future aspirations. In terms of individual decisions towards college, major choice and university location were almost exclusively made independently.

Childbed fever, formally called puerperal fever or puerperal septicemia, is an infection typically contracted by women after childbirth. Historically, childbed fever was a serious threat to maternal health. Childbed fever is caused by exposure of open wounds or abrasions, which are common after giving birth, to group A and B Streptococcal bacteria. Ignaz Semmelweis discovered that hand washing using a chlorinated solution reduced cases of childbed fever in 1847. This project reviews the instances of death from childbed fever in Rochester, New York from 1837-1860 and later from 1907-1919 and attempts to determine which areas of the city had the …

The purpose of this presentation is to set up methods for a long-term study using graduate students in the Speech Pathology graduate program at Longwood University. Previous studies have shown that levels of stress hormones, cortisol and alpha-amylase, decrease after a volunteering activity. In this study, we aim to replicate those results by taking saliva samples from graduate students who are volunteering with disabled children at a local therapeutic barn, Heartland Horse Heroes. From those samples, we will measure levels of cortisol, alpha-amylase, and DHEA, a hormone measuring resistance. We expect to see a decrease in cortisol and alpha-amylase and …

Mass incarceration has been a dominant concern within the criminal justice system since the 1970s. Criminologists and other researchers have looked at the effects crime has on the steadily increasing incarceration rate but to little avail. Intergenerational patterns of incarceration further oppress minority and low-income communities. Although researchers have been able to identify some forms of causation, much more research needs to be done to understand why certain people, according to race, age, gender, and socioeconomic status, are more likely to be incarcerated, arrested, and convicted than others. Physician-assisted suicide, legalized in many states is becoming an option for patients diagnosed with a terminal illness. Nurse participation in physician-assisted suicide is not supported through state nurse practice acts or national nursing organizations, causing potential contradictions in practice rights for advanced practice nurses. The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of registered and advanced practice nurses who work with the terminally ill regarding the patient option of physician-assisted suicide. Intersectionality plays an integral role in how a family or society reacts to a youth’s identification within the LGBTQIAP+ community and their chances of overcoming societal challenges that may follow. The intersections of geographic location and religion are predictive of how accepting a family is toward an LGBTIAP+ child, but this is not correlated with every case. When a family is unaccepting, youth can find themselves running away, homeless, in the foster care system, or incarcerated. High self-monitors are more motivated and able than low self-monitors to conceal parts of their identity (Fuglestad & Snyder, 2010). Gay and lesbian individuals will sometimes conceal their identity due to rejection anxiety and internalized stigmatization (Mohr & Fassinger, 2003; Quinn & Earnshaw, 2013). However, these phenomena have yet to be studied for transgender individuals. The purpose of this study is to explore how self-monitoring may predict identity concealment in transgender individuals. Existing literature on LGBTQ+ health reveals differences in mental and physical health outcomes and differences in health care utilization of LGBTQ+ people compared to non-LGBTQ+ people. While these differences require the urgent attention of medical professionals, research suggests that health care practitioners, generally, are underprepared to serve LGBTQ+ clients and contribute to underutilization of health care services through overt and covert homophobia and transphobia.

The LGBT community is considered a contentious topic of conversation among various religious denominations. This research analyzes conflict between sexual identity and religious beliefs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) adults. Despite retrospective studies investigating attitudes towards same-sex relations, including negative experiences within religious institutions and facets of integrating diverse sexual identities, the quantitative and qualitative data lacks the perspective of LGBT individuals. This study augments existing literature by utilizing data conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2013. The west side of downtown Jacksonville is home to historically black neighborhoods which for over a century were economically thriving. However, if you were to visit those areas today you would be greeted by vacant lots, abandoned buildings and a large homeless population. In the 1930’s predominantly black neighborhoods of Jacksonville were marked as hazardous areas unfit for loans: a process known as redlining. In the U.S., 10% of female college students who have an unplanned pregnancy, drop out (UPFO, 2016). Additionally, young adults (15-24) account for half of the new STI’s (CDC, 2017). Previous research has established communal (other-oriented) motivation is positively associated with factors that predict safe sex practices (e.g., condom use intentions) (Phillips et al., 2019). Conversely, gender norms (societal expectations affiliated with gender) are negatively associated with factors that predict safe sex practices (e.g., partner communication and self-efficacy). For instance, although, women who report higher self-efficacy are more likely to engage in partner communication, women who rely on traditional gender …
