The Effects Of Residence Location On Parental Involvement With The School: A Contrast Between Nonmetropolitan Rural And Other Communities, Yongmin Sun, Daryl Hobbs, William Elder, Dongchu Sun
The Effects Of Residence Location On Parental Involvement With The School: A Contrast Between Nonmetropolitan Rural And Other Communities, Yongmin Sun, Daryl Hobbs, William Elder, Dongchu Sun
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Educational research has long noted the impact of parental involvement with the school on a student's educational success. Despite decades of research, only a few studies have attempted to identify factors that account for variations in parental involvement. In this study, we have employed Coleman's notion of social capital to study the effects of family structure and residence location on parental participation in school related activities. Based on a large stratified sample of Missouri parents, our analyses have demonstrated that parents from dual-parent families and parents who have lived in a school district for a long period of time tend …

Solid Waste Management And The Need For Effective Public Participation, Catherine A. Solheim, Charles E. Faupel, Conner Bailey
Solid Waste Management And The Need For Effective Public Participation, Catherine A. Solheim, Charles E. Faupel, Conner Bailey
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Recent changes in technical requirements for landfill design, mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, have led to closing the majority of solid waste landfills in the United States. Efforts to site new landfills have elicited widespread opposition. Based on eight case studies in Alabama, we identify three themes behind this opposition: threats to quality of life, potentially harmful economic impacts, and frustration over representational issues in the process involved in selecting the proposed solid waste facility. These concerns mirror much of the literature on public opposition to landfills and other facilities which pose similar threats to the environment and …
Social And Demographic Influences On Environmental Attitudes, Marybe Mcmillan, Thomas J. Hoban, William B. Clifford, Margaret R. Brant
Social And Demographic Influences On Environmental Attitudes, Marybe Mcmillan, Thomas J. Hoban, William B. Clifford, Margaret R. Brant
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Sociologists have studied environmental attitudes for over two decades. Much of this research has sought to determine what factors are related to these attitudes. Past research has shown that certain social and demographic variables tend to have a positive influence on environmentalism. One of the more valid and reliable indicators of environmentalism is the 12-item attitude scale known as the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP). That scale has been shown to consist of three sub-scales. This paper extends previous research by examining the relative influence of six independent variables (age, gender, race, education, income, and residence) on each of the sub-scales …

Reflective Critical Inquiry On Critical Inquiry:A Critical Ethnographic Dilemma Continued, Barry Kanpol
Reflective Critical Inquiry On Critical Inquiry:A Critical Ethnographic Dilemma Continued, Barry Kanpol
The Qualitative Report
This manuscript argues that there is an intimate connection between a "critical" ethnographer's personal history and the data collected. The author traces elements in his personal life, such as school, religion, immigration and forms of discrimination, and connects dominant values within the above to the various studies he has conducted over the last decade. The author reflects back on how he may have unconsciously been seeing the everyday experiences of subjects he was studying as a reflection of his own personal experiences at various times in his life - all which relate to forms of institutional and cultural political resistance. …
The Quilting Bee: A Research Metaphor, Rhonda C. Sommers
The Quilting Bee: A Research Metaphor, Rhonda C. Sommers
The Qualitative Report
This paper uses the art of quilting as a metaphor for the research process. Two very different stories are revealed by Amish women at a quilting bee as they explore their purposes, thoughts, and experiences in producing their first quilts. The metaphor is used to contrast the goals, involvement of the researcher, and descriptions utilized by qualitative and quantitative researchers. The tales of these Amish women both contribute to an understanding of the art of quilting just as both qualitative and quantitative researchers have contributions to make to the field of education.
Living With Chronic Heart Disease: A Pilot Study, Charlene A. Winters
Living With Chronic Heart Disease: A Pilot Study, Charlene A. Winters
The Qualitative Report
Few studies have addressed the experience of living with chronic heart disease. Understanding how persons appraise and respond to heart disease will foster nurses' ability to provide holistic client care. The purpose of this pilot study was to extend understanding of the experience of living with chronic heart disease and to identify questions for further study. Qualitative inquiry was the interpretive approach guiding this descriptive explorative study. Individuals eligible for participation were (a) 18 years or older, (b) able to read and speak English, and (c) at least 1 year post acute cardiac event and free of chronic illness unrelated …

The second article (Tellis, 1997b) presented a proposed methodology based on the literature and an application of the methodology in an information technology case. The current article will present a suggested format for reporting case research results. The article will review the goals and objectives of the research project and present various tables containing the results of the data analysis conducted for the project. The article will finally present conclusions drawn from …
Mixing Qualitative And Quantitative Methods In Sports Fan Research, Ian Jones
Mixing Qualitative And Quantitative Methods In Sports Fan Research, Ian Jones
The Qualitative Report
Sports fandom consists of cognitive and affective, as well as behavioural components. Existing sports fan research utilises either strong qualitative, or more often, strong quantitative methodologies. The strengths and weaknesses of each approach are outlined, developing the argument that the use of a single methodology often fails to explore all of these components. The use of a mixed methods approach is suggested to counteract this weakness and to enhance research into the sports fan.

Job Mobility Of Entry-Level Workers: Black And Latina Women In Hospital Corridors, Maria Estella Carrión
New England Journal of Public Policy
Based on data from interviews with fifteen black and fifteen Latina women in entry-level jobs, this article discusses job access strategies, patterns of job mobility, and barriers to upward job mobility for low-income minority women in the hospital industry. Concentrated in the lowest wage levels and job tiers, they are quite diverse in subgroup composition, in age, and in training requirements. The research confirms that deficiencies in schooling and skills remain the major obstacles minority women confront when they apply for hospital jobs and restrict their opportunities once they are within the hospital labor market. Efforts to provide training and …
Performance And Accountability In Human Services: Ownership And Responsibility Of Professionals, Anna-Marie Madison
Performance And Accountability In Human Services: Ownership And Responsibility Of Professionals, Anna-Marie Madison
New England Journal of Public Policy
The recent frenzy of grant makers and government agencies in requiring impact evaluations of all grant recipients has created consternation among human service providers. To ensure their agencies' survival and worker job security, the leaders are faced with meeting the demands offunder-driven programming. Agencies seeking funding must comply with funder-defined needs and accountability criteria rather than their public missions. This article describes the use of mission-based performance evaluation rather than funder compliance to demonstrate accountability for mission accomplishment.
Improving Workforce Conditions In Private Human Service Agencies: A Partnership Between A Union And Human Service Providers, James Green
New England Journal of Public Policy
In 1995 the Service Employees International Union Local 509 and four Massachusetts human service providers signed an unusual agreement to forge a partnership in which employers would remain neutral while the union approached its workers with an offer to advocate in the state legislature for greater funding for private human service employees and to promote cooperative relations with their employers. This study examines the context of the agreement and the pressures on public employee unions and small human service providers whose workforce copes with low wages, high turnover, meager benefits, and poor public image as well as the give-and-take between …
Allied Health Professions In The Health-Sector Job Structure, Françoise J. Carré
Allied Health Professions In The Health-Sector Job Structure, Françoise J. Carré
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article reviews the characteristics of allied health professions in the U.S., Massachusetts, and Boston health sectors. These occupations are considered in the broader context of the multitiered job structure of the health sector and their gender and ethnic composition. The discussion includes surveys of vacancy rates and wage levels for selected allied health professions in Massachusetts hospitals. The article concludes with a more detailed, albeit national, picture of these occupations in the hospital sector per se, their demographic composition, and earnings level.
