Presenters will examine the trend of “wearing many hats” in higher education leadership. For example, being both a department chair and faculty member. In addition, the notion of successfully managing up, the importance of understanding each role you have, and understanding your situational role and the communication we use will be discussed. Lastly, participants will engage in case study scenarios challenging participants to consider various administrative situations and identifying reasonable approaches based on which “hat” you are wearing.

Genderlect theory (Tannen, 1990) examines the differences in communication style of men and women and suggests motivations for those differences (Tannen, 1990). In addition to internal motivation, research has examined other ways in which communication style may change depending upon the gender makeup of the audience. This study sought to determine if there are differences in preferred communication and leadership styles of female student-group leaders based on gender makeup of those groups. The purpose of this study was to examine qualifications, characteristics, successes and motivations among leading social entrepreneurs in not-for-profit or for-profit organizations. Based on an interview guide developed by Dr. Juanie Walker and Heet Ghodasara, Ghodasara conducted interviews with 20 leaders of social entrepreneurship/innovation strategically located in Washington, D.C. Thematic analysis of interview transcripts revealed traits of successful organizations and individuals supported by provocative quotes. Themes of successful organizations include system disruptions, mutual investment, broad network and founder obsolescence. Opening comments from Dr. David Procter, Director of the Center for Engagement and Community Development (CECD) and Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy (ICDD) highlighted the public need for dialogue, the diversity of presentations in the symposium, and the contributions of ICDD to promoting civic discourse at Kansas State University. Provost April Mason underscored the need to address polarization and the constructive contributions of K-State. Dr. Carcasson, Director of the Center for Public Deliberation at Colorado State University, presented a framework for addressing polarization through Deliberative Engagement. This workshop features an introduction to core concepts of intercultural learning, the Intercultural Development Curriculum and Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). Participants develop a basic understanding of the IDI and demonstrate their own cultural self-awareness, “other” awareness, and intercultural communication skills through exercises using narrative styles of “turn-taking,” “pausing,” and “overlapping.”

While research has been conducted on safety and risk management in technical agencies as well as vocational histories of senior executives, little research has been done to determine how a senior executive's vocational narrative helps him or her develop a safety mindset. The goal of this study is guided by the following research question: How does the vocational history of a senior government executive in a technical agency help contribute to his or her sense of safety and risk management?
