Offense Or Defense? Leadership Of The Nba And Nfl In Response To Athlete Activism, Katrina Hale
Offense Or Defense? Leadership Of The Nba And Nfl In Response To Athlete Activism, Katrina Hale
Honors Theses
Over the past decade, the Black community of the United States has faced great discrimination and violence leading to various protests and instances of activism across the county. In the world of sports, where one may think that political engagement has no relation, some Black athletes use their platforms to speak up about these issues. The National Football League (NFL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) recruit the largest percentage of Black athletes compared to any other professional league in the U.S., but their reactions to racial activism on the field and on the court appear very different. In order …
Does Civic Engagement Predict Moral Behaviors? A Test Of Moral Theories, Ally Osterberg
Does Civic Engagement Predict Moral Behaviors? A Test Of Moral Theories, Ally Osterberg
Honors Theses
For various reasons, many students at institutions of higher education choose to partake in civic engagement. Evidence suggests that civic engagement may make students better people. This study tests that hypothesis under the competing frameworks of moral licensing and moral consistency through donation behavior and self-reported scores on various games. Additionally, this study seeks to understand if involvement in civic engagement impacts schemas of leadership. This study supports the theory of moral consistency and concludes that there is a correlation between involvement in civic engagement and perceptions on whether leaders should be civically engaged. We found that the amount of …

The Intersection Of Leadership Identity Development And Meaning-Making Experiences In College Students, Tori Pedersen
Honors Theses
The current study explored the intersection of meaning-making with leadership identity development through a narrative lens. Phenomenological interviews were conducted with six senior college students who participate in a leadership mentoring program. Results showed there are six themes of meaning-making experiences that influence leadership identity development: : (a) Confidence, (b) Growth From Challenges, (c) Identity, (d) Influence by Others, (e) Influencing Others, and (f) Involvements. These findings encourage the practice of developing leadership development curricula based upon these themes to further develop leadership identity in students.

Power And Performance: The Role Of Witchcraft In The Leadership Of Queen Elizabeth I And James I Of England, Sabrina Garcia
Honors Theses
Modern day beliefs about the Early Modern European witchcraft trials portray this time period as ignorant and superstitious, easily falling pretty to religious fervor. However, when looking at the primary source materials from the Elizabethan and Jacobean reigns one can see that beliefs on witchcraft were quite varied and complex. By using primary documents, as well as popular plays at the time that focus on malleus maleficarum (harmful magic) this thesis attempts to explore what witchcraft beliefs can reflect about the leadership performance styles of the monarchs Queen Elizabeth I and James I of England. Witchcraft was an intellectual battleground …

The Importance Of Leaders In The Time Of Covid-19, Lindsay Pett
The Importance Of Leaders In The Time Of Covid-19, Lindsay Pett
Honors Theses
This capstone examines if leaders mattered during the time of COVID-19. I analyzed this by examining the effect of the stringency of leaders’ policies on total cases and deaths per million from COVID-19. This initial analysis found that a decrease in the stringency index was associated with increases in both cases and deaths. Next, I ran additional statistical analyses examining if leaders had an effect on COVID-19 outcomes independent of the economic situation, health infrastructure, and cultural norms of their respective countries. It was found that the stringency of leaders’ policies still had an effect on cases and deaths independent …

Prevalent Technical Leadership Styles And The Impact On Early Engineering Careers, Connor Eigelberger
Honors Theses
This study explores the question of ‘what is the most prevalent leadership style found in industry’, from an engineering student’s internship experiences. Over the course of a Mechanical Engineering student’s four years of internships, they recorded their observation to three questions: ‘What is the dominant leadership style at the Anheuser-Busch InBev Jacksonville Brewery?’, ‘What is the dominant leadership style in the broader engineering sector?’ and lastly, ‘What is the dominant leadership style entry-level engineers should know in order to be successful?’. It reflects on their personal experiences within the engineering industry and suggests an ideal leadership style which can be …
Title Ix And The Responsibility Of Leadership In Collegiate Athletics, Regan J. Mccomb, Chelsea Kaunert
Title Ix And The Responsibility Of Leadership In Collegiate Athletics, Regan J. Mccomb, Chelsea Kaunert
Honors Theses
Typically, when we hear about Title IX, we think of scholarship dollars, ratio of men’s and women’s sports, and equal funding, but in the past several years we have seen a shift in focus to sexual misconduct. Studies have repeatedly shown that sexual assault rates on college campuses are not on the decline. With one in five college students graduating a victim of sexual misconduct, we must now demand more of those we consider leadership in the university setting. Recently we have seen a trend of prominent women, including female athletes, speaking out about their experience with sexual assault. We …

Leadership And Intergroup Relations : Which Leader Is More Favorable Or More Effective While Leading Distinct Subgroups?, Jieyi Ding
Honors Theses
While leading distinct subgroups nowadays, leaders need to address intergroup bias and establish beneficial intergroup relations. They could do so by promoting a collective identity that emphasizes commonality between subgroups or an intergroup relational identity that recognizes distinct characteristics of both subgroups and focuses on their dependency on each other as part of the identity. The research investigated the influence of leader's rhetoric and race interacting with moderators like identity distinctiveness threat on leader evaluation and intergroup bias. The results showed a complicated relationship between how much a leader was liked and how effective a leader could be.
Nasty Women: Television Portrayals Of Societal Anxieties Toward Female Leaders, Emily Sullivan
Nasty Women: Television Portrayals Of Societal Anxieties Toward Female Leaders, Emily Sullivan
Honors Theses
Historically, women have been excluded from leadership positions around the world, while instead men occupy the highest positions of power in society. The lack of female leadership is especially prevalent in the United States, where there has never been a female president, and the majority of high political offices are still held by men. In a similar manner, women have also been excluded from the sphere of comedy throughout history. Women have constantly had to deal with the assertion that women are not funny. This double exclusion from both leadership and comedy has led to the development of my concept …
Applying Nehemiah's Leadership Characteristics In The Business World Today, Amanda Abbud
Applying Nehemiah's Leadership Characteristics In The Business World Today, Amanda Abbud
Honors Theses
As a Business major interested in Biblical studies, I studied leadership skills found in the biblical book of Nehemiah. My research involved identifying key leadership characteristics from Nehemiah's life, then comparing and contrasting these characteristics with books such as Hand Me Another Brick by Charles R. Swindoll and The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader by John C. Maxwell. Also, I gathered information from New American Commentaries Ezra Nehemiah and Esther by Leslie Allen, and Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther by Mervin Breneman.
Cicig In Guatemala: The Institutionalization Of An Anti-Corruption Body, Greg M. Morano
Cicig In Guatemala: The Institutionalization Of An Anti-Corruption Body, Greg M. Morano
Honors Theses
When is the institutionalization of anti-corruption bodies possible in Latin America? Central America’s Cold War era internal conflicts destabilized the Northern Triangle’s governments and greatly weakened judicial institutions. The legacy of these conflicts led to the creation of parallel corrupt networks that infiltrated state institutions and perpetuated impunity and violence. However, in Guatemala, the institutionalization of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (Comisión Internacional Contra la Impunidad en Guatemala, CICIG) has improved the country’s ability to prosecute high-level corruption against the threat of powerful and corrupt state actors. A comparative analysis of the tenures of CICIG’s three commissioners reveals …
Global Reach, Local Markets: The Challenges Of Leading Global Innovation, Sarah Higgins
Global Reach, Local Markets: The Challenges Of Leading Global Innovation, Sarah Higgins
Honors Theses
This Global Studies honors thesis addresses how managers and leaders of global firms manage innovation across multiple markets. Current research on multinational corporations provides an understanding of different kinds of innovation and the ways to attend to multiple markets. However, there is less documentation of how these innovation strategies are actually implemented on the ground and the tensions that these efforts might produce. Therefore, my research focuses in particular on the challenges and tensions faced by leaders of global firms as they implement transnational innovation strategies. This study is based upon in-depth interviews with 20 participants who held positions in …
Why We Do What We Do: A Look At Factors That Draw College Freshmen To Music Education, Emilee V. Randall
Why We Do What We Do: A Look At Factors That Draw College Freshmen To Music Education, Emilee V. Randall
Honors Theses
At some point during college, most students face conflict when it comes to their choice in major. Indeed, an estimated 75 percent of students change their major at least once before graduating (Gordon, 1995). Specifically in the field of music education, there are instances where at least 50 percent of freshman music education majors do not complete the music education degree through to graduation (Gavin, 2010, p. 94). When considering statistics like these, it becomes obvious that selecting a major has serious implications for the majority of students, not just undecided ones. These students may have difficulty perceiving themselves as …

The Forces Of Value: Structure And Content Of Self-Reported Values By Civilian And Military Science Students, Shelly Holland
Honors Theses
Upon graduation, students in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) programs are commissioned to lead the individuals tasked with protecting the American people and their ideology. This project examines the values of leaders and followers in military and nonmilitary contexts to determine if students in military education programs endorse values that are different from the values of students in non-military programs. First, this paper discusses the concept of values, and how values are defined and differentiated from other concepts. By providing an overview of past literature on values within the military and in general, the importance leaders place on values …
A Bad Following: The Big Five Factors Of Personality And Follower Reactions To Unethical Leader Behavior, Rose Wynn
Honors Theses
Leadership research currently lacks significant attention to followership as an essential component of leadership. Existing literature addresses leader traits and behaviors more than those of followers, but also falls short by offering greater focus on ethical rather than unethical leadership. The current study attempts to fill this gap by examining not only followers as an overlooked yet essential influence, but also unethical leadership, particularly as it relates to follower perceptions of such behavior. The investigation uses follower personality (defined by the Big Five Factor Personality Dimensions) as a potential predictor for follower support or rejection of unethical leadership. Findings of …
Leadership With Liberal Arts : From Ehebia To Jepson, Shaye Ellis
Leadership With Liberal Arts : From Ehebia To Jepson, Shaye Ellis
Honors Theses
“Leadership is one of the most observed and least understood phenomena.” Despite his extensive research and knowledge in the field, James MacGregor Burns still professes the complexity of the concept of leadership. The abstract nature of the topic does not lend itself to a brief synopsis or a limited understanding of a specific aspect of leadership. In many ways it eludes being confined to a particular category and exists across and between different academic disciplines. In the absence of a prescribed curriculum or method of study, institutions of higher education establish programs and departments that disseminate a distinct model or …
Leadership Is Passion: Understanding The Changing Experiences Of Women Student Leaders At A Co-Educational Liberal Arts Institution, Aleena Paul
Honors Theses
The traditional definition of leadership emphasizes the actions of individual leaders with culturally-ascribed masculine personality traits and behaviors who control all aspects of an organization. A new post-industrial paradigm, in contrast, defines leadership as interpersonal relationships. This evolving paradigm, with its emphasis on culturally-attributed feminine traits such as collaboration and participation, has allowed for a broader conceptualization of leadership that brings forth discussions on women leaders and their experiences. According to current research, while there is increasing involvement and empowerment of women leaders, their experiences continue to be hindered by gender stereotypes. This study attempts to explore the experiences of …
Lyndon Johnson: A Psychological Character Study, Stephanie L. Vacchio
Lyndon Johnson: A Psychological Character Study, Stephanie L. Vacchio
Honors Theses
This thesis centers on Lyndon Johnson and his character traits and how they are translated into his leadership abilities. The ways in which he handled issues as president, his personal relationships with others, and his own personality traits all define who Johnson was as a man. These aspects combined can be viewed as “character”, or the result of the environment someone has been exposed to for a prolonged period of time. In the case of Johnson, it is his childhood that has played the largest role in shaping his character and in turn his personality. My thesis explores the psychological …

Unethical Decision Making : Understanding The Role Of Leadership And Gender, Laura A. Poatsy
Unethical Decision Making : Understanding The Role Of Leadership And Gender, Laura A. Poatsy
Honors Theses
This study examined the effects leadership role and gender have on unethical decision making and the engagement in unethical behaviors. 64 undergraduate students were exposed to both hypothetical and behavioral measures that tested their willingness to engage in unethical behaviors. The results indicate a significant effect of leadership role on unethical decision making. Furthermore, goal importance and self-efficacy are driving factors in leaders' propensity to engage in unethical behaviors. These findings demonstrate the different circumstances that drive individuals who associate with different gender-roles and are placed in various leadership-roles to act in unethical ways.
The Impact Of Gender-Linked Tasks On Female And Male Leaders, Ashley Pyle
The Impact Of Gender-Linked Tasks On Female And Male Leaders, Ashley Pyle
Honors Theses
Because gender inequalities still exist, research is needed to better understand the differences in leadership perceptions and preference between genders. This research examines the role of gender, sex role orientation, and gender-linked tasks in shaping leadership efficacy, perceived preference, and leadership persistence. It was predicted that men and women will have higher levels of leadership efficacy, perceive themselves as better leaders, have a stronger desire to attain leadership roles in the future and be more likely to persist in the leadership role for the gender congruent task than the gender incongruent task. I also predicted that sex role orientation will …
The Effects Of Single-Sex Student Leadership Positions On Leadership Style Used, Perceptions Of Effective Leadership, Self-Efficacy, Domain Identification, Intent To Lead In The Future, And Perceptions And Evaluations Of Leaders, Alyson Emrick
Honors Theses
Included in this paper are two studies, a survey study, and a vignette study. The survey research, Study 1, examined the effects of single-sex student leadership positions on leadership style used, perceptions of effective leadership, leadership self-efficacy, domain identification, and intent to lead in the future. It compared a group of male and female leaders of single-sex organizations, a group of men and women holding leadership positions in coeducational groups, and a group of male and female non-leaders. Male and female leaders reported using different leadership styles; men reported higher levels of the autocratic-task style while women reported higher levels …

The Legitimacy Of Leadership Studies As An Academic Field Of Study, Megan Moran, Joy Shortlidge
The Legitimacy Of Leadership Studies As An Academic Field Of Study, Megan Moran, Joy Shortlidge
Honors Theses
Before exploring the legitimacy of leadership studies as an academic field of study, we will first explore the characteristics of a liberal arts education and establish its legitimacy (through historical analyses) as the "standard" of higher education in America, and the educational approach most associated with cultivating an enlightened citizenry in a democratic society. Once the legitimacy of a liberal arts education is established, this form of education will serve as the benchmark to which we will compare leadership studies. We will apply the same criteria that established the legitimacy of a liberal arts education to the field of leadership …
"Leadership And Peace And Conflict Studies" : The Mutual Benefits Of Linking Multidisciplinary Fields Of Study, Douglas M. Schaefer
"Leadership And Peace And Conflict Studies" : The Mutual Benefits Of Linking Multidisciplinary Fields Of Study, Douglas M. Schaefer
Honors Theses
The purpose of this project is to take two fields of study, Leadership Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies (a.k.a. Peace Studies), and critically analyze how both can mutually benefit each other. For this purpose, a proposed model of an academic course combining the two fields of study in the form of a conceptual syllabus will be included in the appendix. However, before such a course is taught, the connections between two previously unconnected fields must be made. This paper will show how both fields of study mutually benefit each other and combine to form a course designed specifically for …
Leadership 'N' Cultural Anthropoloty : A Course Outline, Gabriel D. Soll
Leadership 'N' Cultural Anthropoloty : A Course Outline, Gabriel D. Soll
Honors Theses
In turning Twain's kaleidoscope and looking through the light of the social sciences a new combination of colored glass comes into view. The overlap of the glasses, which are the study of leadership and the study of culture, shines through as a vibrant combination of older ideas in a new configuration. It is the vision of this new mosaic, and the belief that the academic world provides one of the best ways not only to explore, but to disseminate new ideas that I have decided to undertake the creation of a course designed for any student interested in either field. …
