“You’Re Not My Leader.” The Impact Of Gender And Ethnic Stereotypes On Leadership Evaluations, Arief B. Kartolo Jan 2022

“You’Re Not My Leader.” The Impact Of Gender And Ethnic Stereotypes On Leadership Evaluations, Arief B. Kartolo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effectiveness of a leader is important to the success of an organization across many levels. Because the effectiveness of leadership is subject to the evaluation and perception of followership, it is often influenced through biases and expectations – such as stereotypes. Although ample studies have demonstrated the impact of stereotyping on leadership roles, several gaps still need to be addressed in the literature. First, the literature tends to focus on the impact of gender stereotypes, while fewer studies have considered the impact of ethnic stereotypes on leadership roles. Second, few studies have investigated the impact of stereotypes based on …

Authentic Leadership Associations With Team Cohesion And Athlete Satisfaction: Examining The Relative Effects Of Coach And Athlete Leadership, Kyle Bezaire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was twofold. The first purpose was to determine if youth sport athletes perceived their head coaches and athlete leaders to differ in their frequency of use of authentic leadership behaviours. The second purpose was to determine which authentic leadership behaviours for each group were related to the outcomes of cohesion and athlete satisfaction. The sample comprised 119 competitive youth sport athletes. Results indicated that head coaches and athlete leaders both displayed all four authentic leadership behaviours (self-awareness, relational transparency, internalized moral perspective, and balanced processing of information), with head coaches displaying all four behaviours …

The Role Of Bounded Rationality In School Improvement, Brandy L. Doan Jul 2020

The Role Of Bounded Rationality In School Improvement, Brandy L. Doan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

How a principal cognitively interprets their school context and makes decisions to improve the instructional and cultural capital of each school has not been researched in Ontario. Thus, 21 elementary principals in one school district in Ontario were interviewed to study what contexts principals are working in and how these conditions affect rational school-improvement decision-making. Thirteen principals were leading in Turnaround Schools (TS) and eight were leading in Non-Turnaround Schools (NTS). TS are usually located in high poverty areas and have higher proportions of vulnerable students (i.e., Indigenous, racialized, recent immigrants, and/or those living with disabilities). Results showed that principal …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Teachers’ Perceptions Of Principals’ Transformational Leadership Practices And Teacher Morale In Elementary Schools In Southern Ontario, Chinyere Saka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research seeks to find a relationship between teachers’ perceptions of principals’ transformational leadership practices and teacher morale in elementary schools. To this end, a correlational research design was conducted in this study to identify the strength and nature of the relationship between the two variables (teachers’ perceptions of principal’s transformational leadership practices and teacher morale). Two surveys were administered to elementary school teachers. The independent variable, teachers’ perceptions of principals’ transformational leadership behavior, was measured using the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI). The dependent variable was teacher morale, and the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire (PTO) was used to measure this variable. …

The Implementation And Evaluation Of An Athlete Leadership Development Program With Male Older Youth Hockey Players, Matthieu Boisvert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The sample comprised of 14 male major midget hockey players (M = 16.46, SD = 0.78) from one team competing in the Bluewater Hockey League during the 2017-2018 season. Players participated in six leadership development workshops over the course of the season. The results indicated no significant mean changes at post-intervention for athlete leadership behaviours, cohesion, and collective efficacy. A focus group interview conducted with the team’s leadership core (i.e., captain and 3 …

Understanding The Absence Of Female Coaches In Sport And The Value Of Same-Sex Role Models For Female Athletes In Their Coaching Pursuits, Taylor Dawn Imeson Jan 2017

Understanding The Absence Of Female Coaches In Sport And The Value Of Same-Sex Role Models For Female Athletes In Their Coaching Pursuits, Taylor Dawn Imeson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Like many leadership positions, women hold very few head coaching positions in sport. This does not mean that women are not involved in sport; in most cases, they take on smaller roles like assistant coach, trainer or executive/board positions. Previous research suggests that same-sex role models can aid in increasing the number of females that take on coaching as a career. Utilizing an online survey and focus group sessions with CIS level female athletes, the current study examined the influence of coaches, both male and female on these athletes and their desires or aspirations to coach as a career and/or …

Examining The Relationships Between Trust In Athlete Leadership And Cohesion, Geoffrey M.A. Hackett Jan 2014

Examining The Relationships Between Trust In Athlete Leadership And Cohesion, Geoffrey M.A. Hackett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined trust in athlete leadership. The study examined whether an athlete's propensity to trust others moderated the relationship between the antecedents of trust and trust in athlete leadership. In addition, the study examined whether the consequences of trust mediated the relationship between trust in athlete leadership and outcomes of trust. The sample comprised of 125 varsity athletes. Results showed Ability and Benevolence were significant predictors of Trust in the Athlete Leader, while Propensity to Trust did moderate the relationship between Benevolence and Trust in the Athlete Leader. As well, results indicated that Closeness fully mediated the relationship …

The Implementation Of A New Program Of Leadership Development With Female Varsity Athletes: A Pilot Study, Ashley Michelle Duguay

In terms of leader development, results indicated significant increases in ratings of the use of eight of …

The Relationship Between Self-Rated Athlete Leadership Characteristics, Self-Construal, And Team Cohesion, Michelle M. Peters Jan 2013

The Relationship Between Self-Rated Athlete Leadership Characteristics, Self-Construal, And Team Cohesion, Michelle M. Peters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of cohesion in the study of sport teams has long been recognized by group dynamics researchers (e.g., Brawley, Carron, & Widmeyer, 1987). However, drawing on the Conceptual Framework of Cohesion in Sport (Carron, 1982), many antecedents of cohesion have yet to be explored in detail. Therefore, the current study focused on two of the antecedent factors from Carron's framework. Specifically, this study examined the relationship concerning athlete leadership and self-construal in relation to team cohesion. Athletes ( N = 278) from a variety of varsity level sport teams competing within the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Association participated in …

The Relationship Between The Congruency In Perceptions Of Coach Leadership Behaviours And Perceptions Of Cohesion And Performance, Anthony G. Vander Laan Jan 2012

The Relationship Between The Congruency In Perceptions Of Coach Leadership Behaviours And Perceptions Of Cohesion And Performance, Anthony G. Vander Laan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between perceptual congruency of coaching leadership and perceptions of cohesion and performance. Sixty coaches and 199 athletes responded to two leadership inventories: the Differentiated Transformational Leadership Inventory (DTLI; Callow et al., 2009) measuring transformational leadership and the Leadership Scale for Sports (LSS; Chelladurai &Saleh, 1980) measuring transactional leadership. Additionally, athletes indicated perceptions of cohesion by completing the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ; Carron et al., 1985) and perceptions of personal performance through a self-report performance measure (Spalding, 2010). Results indicated that over-evaluative athletes (i.e., those who rated the coach favourably) …
