Random Drug Testing Of Physicians: A Question Of Safety, Jeffrey Julian
Random Drug Testing Of Physicians: A Question Of Safety, Jeffrey Julian
DePaul Journal of Health Care Law
The prospect of mandatory random drug testing of physicians in the U.S. has been the subject of active discussion for well over three decades.1 To this day, however, such programs remain the exception rather than the rule.2 In this paper, we examine the state of mandatory random drug testing of physicians in the U.S. and explore the future prospects thereof. It was a 1986 Executive Order (Drug-Free Federal Workplace) of President Reagan that saw to it that physicians in the employ of the federal government were to be subjected to mandatory random drug testing.3 This development was attributable to the …

Tech-Savvy Hospitality: A Strategic Approach To Overcoming Labor Shortages, Donna Haywood, Smita Singh Dr.
ICHRIE Research Reports
The hospitality industry faces an unprecedented labor shortage, prompting a surge in technological solutions. This reflection paper explores how innovations such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and digital applications are being deployed to bridge these staffing gaps. By analyzing the role of technology in areas like housekeeping, guest services, event, and culinary operations, implications for service quality and industry standards are also assessed. While technology offers potential alleviation for labor challenges, it's crucial to consider its impact on the inherent human-centric nature of hospitality.

Louise De Marillac: Ingenuity, Mission, And Mystique, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C.
Vincentian Heritage Journal
Betty Ann McNeil profiles Louise de Marillac as “a prototype social worker whose social service interventions highlight how twenty-first-century social issues echo those of the seventeenth century.” In response to the political, religious, and social upheaval in seventeenth-century France, she and Vincent de Paul founded the Confraternities of Charity and the Daughters of Charity. These groups made innovative use of women’s leadership and organizational skills to provide the poor with quality care. McNeil explains how Louise’s “approach to serving people in need remains relevant for social work practitioners today.”
Addressing Labor Challenges In The Hospitality Industry: Insights From College Students, W. Clarke Griffin
Addressing Labor Challenges In The Hospitality Industry: Insights From College Students, W. Clarke Griffin
ICHRIE Research Reports
The hospitality industry is facing a growing labor crisis. College students were surveyed on their perceptions of the hospitality industry and a roundtable discussion of industry experts occurred to explore the results. College students described that the starting hourly wage and a flexible work schedule were the most important factors influencing their employment decisions. The study's findings suggest that the hospitality industry can attract and retain more college students by prioritizing employee welfare and effectively communicating the benefits of a career in hospitality. This could involve offering higher wages, more flexible work schedules, and better benefits. Creating a positive work …
Toxic Leadership: Managerial Implications For Tourism And Hospitality Business, Alessandro Cavelzani
Toxic Leadership: Managerial Implications For Tourism And Hospitality Business, Alessandro Cavelzani
ICHRIE Research Reports
There is growing attention on research about dysfunctional management issues, specifically regarding toxic leadership, which lead to deleterious consequences in business. When a leader enacts toxic behaviors rather than providing support and realistic directions, it will cause severe stress, burnout, and passive-aggressive dynamics on their team, negatively affecting guest experiences. Therefore, this transactional paper aims at developing managers’ awareness of the toxic leadership issue, enlightening how to recognize and detect it. Also, to contribute to reducing job stress and promoting mental health at the workplace, we suggest some recommendations on how companies can handle the toxic leadership phenomenon by enhancing …

Encounters With God: Rabbinic Stories And What We Can Learn From Them, Hershey H. Friedman, Linda Weiser Friedman
Encounters With God: Rabbinic Stories And What We Can Learn From Them, Hershey H. Friedman, Linda Weiser Friedman
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
Storytelling skills are an indispensable way of teaching people lessons. Unlike case histories that are limited to facts, stories can stir emotions and arouse the audience's passion. This may be why stories, even fiction, have been used to teach ethics/Mussar. The sages of the Talmud were not historians; they told stories—fascinating ones. The Rabbinic stories involving God are a clever device to teach various lessons about the Divine. Several of the above narratives demonstrate conclusively how the legal system based on the Torah is supposed to work. The stories are also designed to show that God cares about people and …

Crisis And Revitalization Of Rural Tourism In The Appalachian Region Amidst The Pandemic: The Perspective Of Key Stakeholders, Nikol Lopez Llantuy, Sandy Chen
ICHRIE Research Reports
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced everyone to rethink their business activities. Due to being distant from crowded cities, rural tourism destinations have become getaway places, with some counties in rural Ohio experiencing an influx of tourists. This study addresses responses from key stakeholders of tourism and tourism development activities in two counties in southeastern Ohio, part of the Appalachian region. Their perceptions of the impacts of the pandemic on local tourism and tourism activities were examined using a qualitative approach. Findings suggested both positive and negative impacts of COVID-19, showing the challenges faced, and the strategies used during the pandemic. …

Blood Is Not Always Thicker Than Water: A Family Business Case Study, Hai Ta, Todd M. Inouye, Shih-Jen Kathy Ho, Vincent Agnello
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
According to the US Census Bureau, 90% of businesses in the U.S. are family-owned or controlled. Unfortunately, the succession rates for family-owned businesses are dismal. Only 30% survive a transfer from the founder to a child and only 11% survive a second transfer to the third generation. Two major factors that contribute to this are lack of succession planning and failure to deal with family conflict, both of which are management failures and are often intertwined. Failure to properly manage the family fosters a sense of unfairness, unequal workload, and perhaps a free-rider problem among family members. This not only …
