Five Year Management Strategy For The Recreational Trout Fishery. Discussion Paper For Public Comment On Future Management., The Rfac’S Recreational Freshwater Fisheries Stakeholder Sub-Committee

Fisheries management papers

The Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee (RFAC) was concerned over the delay in time in progressing this issue and recommended that the issue of trout stocking for recreational purposes be progressed in isolation. This matter was referred to the Recreational Freshwater Fisheries Stakeholder Sub-Committee (RFFSS) to progress the recreational aspects of stocking trout within State public waters. This strategy represents a significant step in ensuring the appropriate level of management is provided for the translocation of trout into and within Western Australia for recreational purposes. It is also hoped that this policy will serve as a guide for the management and …

Road-Killed Bats, Highway Design, And The Commuting Ecology Of Bats, Amy L. Russell, Calvin M. Butchkoski, Leslie Saidak, Gary F. Mccracken

Amy L. Russell

During a Myotis sodalis telemetry project in Pennsylvania, USA, in 2000, road-killed M. lucifugus were recorded and a highway survey was initiated. The purpose of this study was to assess the level of mortality from road kills on this colony, verify which species were being killed in traffic and examine the influence of canopy height and structure on flight behavior. On 10 evenings between 15 May and 26 July 2001, bats were counted as they emerged from day roosts and crossed a heavily trafficked highway en route to foraging areas. A total of 26 442 bats were observed cross- ing …

Integrated Fisheries Management. Allocation Report Roe's Abalone Resource Perth Metropolitan Region., Integrated Fisheries Allocation Advisory Committee

Fisheries management papers

The introduction of Integrated Fisheries Management (IFM) is a recent development in the management of fisheries in Western Australia. IFM is an initiative aimed at addressing the issue of how fish resources in Western Australia can be best shared between competing users within the broad context of “Ecologically Sustainable Development”, or ESD.

Changes In The Lake Ladik Fish Community (1972-2004) And Ichthyofauna Of Its Inlet And Outlet Streams (Samsun, Turkey), Selma Uğurlu, Nazmi̇ Polat, Şevket Kandemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This research was conducted to record the fish species inhabiting Lake Ladik and its inlet and outlet streams between July 2003 and August 2004. Electrofishing equipment, fishing cast net, fisherman's dip net, and fishing nets with different scales were used to catch fish samples. As a result of evaluated samples caught from the research area, 12 species belonging to 4 families (Cyprinidae, Balitoridae, Esocidae, and Percidae) were identified.

Managing Wild Pigs: A Technical Guide, Ben C. West, Andrea L. Cooper, James B. Armstrong Jan 2009

Managing Wild Pigs: A Technical Guide, Ben C. West, Andrea L. Cooper, James B. Armstrong

Human–Wildlife Interactions Monographs

Wild pigs are and will continue to be a challenging problem for wildlife managers, landowners, farmers, conservationists, and others. Despite ongoing control programs, wild pigs have increased both their range and population size. Because of this growth, wildlife managers will increasingly be involved in dealing with problems caused by wild pigs traditionally, as well as emerging problems such as landscaping damage in suburban areas. Successful management strategies will depend upon persistent, adaptive, and integrated management programs that incorporate sound biological and ecological information. An integrated management approach, in addition to addressing the biological and ecological aspects of wild pigs, will …

Survival And Productivity Of A Low-Density Black Bear Population In Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, Roger A. Baldwin, Louis C. Bender Jan 2009

Survival And Productivity Of A Low-Density Black Bear Population In Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, Roger A. Baldwin, Louis C. Bender

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Historically, Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) has supported a small black bear (Ursus americanus) population of low productivity. Increased visitor use of the park and development around its periphery could lead to a reduction in population viability of RMNP’s bear population or could increase the potential for human–bear conflict. Therefore, we investigated contemporary survival and productivity parameters for RMNP’s black bear population from 2003 to 2006 and compared these values to historic levels (1984–1991) and population means throughout the western United States to clarify the current status of RMNP’s bear population. The contemporary black bear population showed signs …

State Of The Fisheries Report 2008/09, W.J Fletcher, K. Santoro

Status reports of the fisheries and aquatic resources

The State of the Fisheries Report summarises the outcomes of many departmental activities undertaken during 2008/09 including management changes, compliance work and research to assess stock levels, monitor breeding stocks and undertake environmental assessments. This document provides a valuable reference point for the status of Western Australian fisheries of major importance to the commercial and recreational sectors, the aquaculture industry and for those interested in aquatic management.

Seal Bounties In Maine And Massachusetts, 1888 To 1962, Barbarai Lelli, David Harris Ph.D, Aboueissa Abouel-Makarim

Faculty Publications

Maine and Massachusetts paid bounties on seals during the 19th and 20th centuries. To determine the number of seals killed for bounty, we examined historical records of bounty claims, and used geographic information systems and multiple linear regression to find predictors of places where large numbers of bounties were paid. We found records of 24,831 bounties paid in Maine (1891-1945) and 15,690 in Massachusetts (1888-1962), Considering possible fraud, missing data, and seals struck and lost, this suggests that 72,284 to 135,498 seals were killed in the bounty hunt, probably enough to account for regional declines in seal populations. Larger numbers …

Temporal And Spatial Changes Of Crustaceans In Mixed Eelgrass Beds, Zostera Marina L. And Z. Noltii Hornem., At The Sinop Peninsula Coast (The Southern Black Sea, Turkey), Melek Ersoy Karaçuha, Murat Sezgi̇n, Ertan Dağli

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This research was carried out to determine the macrobenthic crustacean species associated with mixed eelgrass beds (Zostera marina and Z. noltii) occurring in the upper-infralittoral zone of the Sinop peninsula coast (the southern Black Sea, Turkey) and their bioecolological features. From June 2004 to April 2005, investigations were seasonally performed at the depths of 2-4 m at 6 different stations chosen on the Sinop peninsula coast. As a result of the study, a total of 7057 individuals belonging to 55 species and 6 orders were identified. Amphipoda was the dominant group in terms of number of species (63% of the …
