Exploring The Use Of The Bimanual Arm Trainer For Improving Upper Extremity Motor Function In Stroke Patients., Manuel G. Wilfred
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background and purpose
There are few evidence-based treatment options to address recovery in patients with severe upper extremity impairment post-stroke. Although robotic treatment options have been widely explored with variable outcomes, the contribution of bimanual training to improve upper extremity control and coordination has not yet been fully explored. To date, the mirrored motion Bimanual Arm Trainer (BAT) has not specifically been investigated for its effectiveness in stroke patients. This study explored the usefulness of the bimanual arm trainer in improving upper extremity function in stroke patients with severe deficits and its impact on quality of life.

The Genesis And Development Of Deathscapes In America -- A Story Of How Chicago And Louisville Cemeteries Demonstrate The Shifting Rationale Of Cemetery Placement During The 19th And 20th Centuries., Thomas D. Cleven
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Today, most construction projects require a systematic site qualification based on a suitability analysis utilizing parameters such as slope, soil type, elevation, distance to open water, and distance to transportation. The proper siting determines the success of a project in terms of project stability and longevity. However, has this suitability analysis exist for one of the most significant phases of humanity – death. Historically dead bodies seem to have been placed without suitable qualification being many cemeteries have created environmental problems for the living. Hence, with which placement rationale has been used comes to mind. With a varied array of …

Parens Patriae And Parental Rights: When Should The State Override Parental Medical Decisions?, Elchanan G. Stern
Journal of Law and Health
Alfie Evans was a terminally ill British child whose parents, clinging to hope, were desperately trying to save his life. Hospital authorities disagreed and petitioned the court to enjoin the parents from removing him and taking him elsewhere for treatment. The court stepped in and compelled the hospital to discontinue life support and claimed that further treatment was not in the child’s best interest. This note discusses the heartbreaking stories of Alfie and two other children whose parents’ medical decisions on their behalf were overridden by the court. It argues that courts should never decide that death is in a …

Faith Healing: An Unregulated Health Domain, Farhan Mushtaq
MSJ Capstone Projects
Despite Pakistan having adopted modern forms of treatment as part of its official healthcare regime, many non-traditional treatment types are still prevalent in the country - faith healing being one of them. It has a wide acceptance among the masses, be it country’s cities or rural areas.
There are many factors that have forced people to seek alternative forms of treatment: inadequate healthcare facilities, weak healthcare legislation, and religious misconceptions surrounding health-related concerns.
This capstone project is focused on highlighting the flaws in Pakistan’s healthcare regulations that have failed to devise a robust mechanism to curtail the practice. It includes …

Health Insurance Program For The Poor, Out-Of-Pocket Costs, And Catastrophic Health Expenditures In India, Shyamkumar Sriram
Theses and Dissertations
Background
India is currently taking steps to provide Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as envisaged in its National Health Policy 2017. Financial protection is considered the backbone of UHC. In India, OOP expenses accounts for about 62.6% of total health expenditure - one of the highest in the world. Out of 1.324 billion people in India, around 12.4% of the population is below the poverty line. Lack of health insurance coverage and inadequate coverage are important reasons for high OOP health expenditures. High OOP health expenditures push many households into poverty. The objective of this research is to examine the effect …

A Review On Animal-Based Homoeopathic Drugs And Their Applications In Biomedicine, Bibaswan Biswas, Sundaram E, Shyaga Jhansi, Satish Patel, Anil Khurana, Raj Manchanda
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Homoeopathy is one of the most well-practiced medical systems in the world. In Homoeopathy, like all other natural sources, animal and their secretions have been widely used. However, unlike other natural sources of homoeopathic drugs, for example, plants and chemicals, the collection and preparation of animal-based drugs are extremely challenging, especially for drugs from exotic animals. Considering the challenges, we envision that a review regarding the animal-based therapeutics, used in Homoeopathy, may be useful. Our review, consistently has found that the discoveries of the modern biomedicine agree with the reports from the homoeopathic literature. In many cases, the recent biomedical …
Proving Non-Conventional Methods: A Paradigmatic Paradox, Lex Rutten
Proving Non-Conventional Methods: A Paradigmatic Paradox, Lex Rutten
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Originally, it was thought that Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) would supplant decision-making based on intuition or plausibility. Later, it appeared that the gold standard in EBM, the Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT), was not as 'hard' a reference point as had been supposed, and an assessment of credibility was needed. After some decades, 'credible' RCT-centred EBM has led to the dismissal of therapies deemed to be implausible, such as Homoeopathy. Nevertheless, such therapies remain widely appreciated by patients who use them alongside conventional medicine. Nearly two hundred RCTs of Homoeopathy showed no difference in efficacy between Homoeopathy and comparable conventional trials. There …
