Cause For Question: Risk And Postmodern Panic In The Vaccine Safety Debate, Marygrace Trifilio

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the thoughts and feelings of non-vaccinating parents in America and argues that contemporary vaccine refusal results from overwhelming information saturation in the Internet age. Non-vaccinating parents express distrust of competing scientific research and call for a return to a more natural, toxin-free lifestyle.

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Background and Objectives: In mosquito vectors, dengue virus (DENV) invasion occurs through midgut cells, but available mosquito cell lines for in vitro study of DENV are prepared from eggs or larvae, which are not appropriate models, to study its infectivity. Hence, we developed a new primary cell culture, from Aedes albopictus mosquito midgut, and standardized it for in vitro study of DENV, with an aim to find out any possible role of homoeopathic medicines, in preventing or reducing DENV invasiveness in these midgut cells. This midgut primary cell culture demonstrated prominent cytopathic effects on infection with wild DENV isolated from …

Negative Portrayal Of Vaccines By Commercial Websites: Tortious Misrepresentation, Donald C. Arthur Nov 2016

Negative Portrayal Of Vaccines By Commercial Websites: Tortious Misrepresentation, Donald C. Arthur

University of Massachusetts Law Review

Commercial website publishers use false and misleading information to create distrust of vaccines by claiming vaccines are ineffective and contain contaminants that cause autism and other disorders. The misinformation has resulted in decreased childhood vaccination rates and imperiled the public by allowing resurgence of vaccine-preventable illnesses. This Article argues that tort liability attaches to publishers of commercial websites for foreseeable harm that results when websites dissuade parents from vaccinating their children in favor of purchasing alternative products offered for sale on the websites.

Are Researchers Registering Systematic Reviews In Clinicaltrials.Gov?, Gary E. Kaplan, Ms, Ahip Sep 2016

Are Researchers Registering Systematic Reviews In Clinicaltrials.Gov?, Gary E. Kaplan, Ms, Ahip

Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations

BACKGROUND:

ClinicalTrials.gov (CT) is an increasingly important resource for systematic reviewers attempting to identify published and unpublished clinical studies. In addition to clinical studies, however, some searches of the CT database also return systematic reviews (SRs). When I inquired about the SRs appearing in the results, the NLM Help Desk responded that “We do not recommend that systematic reviews be entered in ClinicalTrials.gov, since we only want the results of a clinical trial entered once. However, we will not refuse them if they are entered.” I wanted to find out how many SRs are included, describe their characteristics, and suggest …

Commodifying Indigeneity: How The Humanization Of Birth Reinforces Racialized Inequality In Mexico, Rosalynn A. Vega Sep 2016

Commodifying Indigeneity: How The Humanization Of Birth Reinforces Racialized Inequality In Mexico, Rosalynn A. Vega

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines the humanized birth movement in Mexico and analyzes how the remaking of tradition—the return to traditional birthing arts (home birth, midwife‐assisted birth, natural birth)—inadvertently reinscribes racial hierarchies. The great irony of the humanized birth movement lies in parents’ perspective of themselves as critics of late capitalism. All the while, their very rejection of consumerism bolsters ongoing commodification of indigenous culture and collapses indigeneity, nature, and tradition onto one another. While the movement is quickly spreading across Mexico, indigenous women and their traditional midwives are largely excluded from the emerging humanized birth community. Through ethnographic examples, the article …

Antoniyar Kōvil: Hindu-Catholic Identity At The St. Anthony Shrine In St. Mary’S Co-Cathedral, Chennai, Pj Johnston

Journal of Global Catholicism

This article combines ethnographic description of the practices of Hindu and Christian visitors of the St. Antony Shrine in Chennai with the observation that this material cannot be understood using the standard world religions paradigm that essentializes Christianity as exclusivistic. Drawing upon the visual and material culture of the shrine in light of premodern and Vatican II templates for inculturation and the negotiation of religious difference, the article highlights overlap between Tamil Hinduism and the Tamil Popular Catholicism of the site to argue that the beliefs and practices documented should inform descriptive and normative accounts of Catholic Christianity. Because Tamil …

Incorporating Naturopathic Medicine Into A Hospital Setting: One Institution's Experience, Thomas Lanni, Maureen Anderson, Hallie Armstrong, Gail Elliott Patricolo

Articles

The number of patients seeking complementary health approaches combined with conventional treatments has grown considerably over the past decade. The current authors have previously described how an integrative medicine department was initiated and implemented at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan. This article discusses how the integrative medicine department was expanded to include naturopathic medicine. This expansion was implemented because patients were taking herbs and supplements without their doctors' knowledge. This situation can be dangerous, especially for patients with cancer who are receiving chemotherapy, as various herbs and supplements can interact with treatment for these patients. Because the State of Michigan …

Factors That Explain The Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine In Undergraduates, Erin Sanchez Jun 2016

Factors That Explain The Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine In Undergraduates, Erin Sanchez

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been determined to be highly effective in treating health problems and improving the lives of college students. However, if students are not using CAM therapies, they are not receiving the benefits that CAM could provide them. In a small city, where CAM may not be widely available, CAM use may be low. The current study attempted to determine if trends in student CAM use in large cities are similar in a small city. A survey was distributed to undergraduates at a mid-sized university in the Rocky Mountain region, yielding 217 completed surveys. The survey …

Combating Infant Mortality In Rural India: Evidence From A Field Study Of Ehealth Kiosk Imlementations, Viswanath Venkatesh, Arun Rai, Tracy Ann Sykes, Ruba Aljafari

Computer Information Systems Faculty Publications

The United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals listed high infant mortality rates as a major problem in developing countries, especially in rural areas. Given the powerful information dissemination capabilities, information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been suggested as interventions to build infant care awareness and to modify healthcare behaviors. We examine how the use of one ICT intervention—specifically, eHealth kiosks disseminating authenticated and accessible medical information—can alleviate the problem of high infant mortality in rural India. We investigate how mothers’ social networks affect their use of eHealth kiosks, seeking professional medical care for their infants and, ultimately, infant mortality. Drawing on …
