In Vitro Effect Of Shark Cartilage On Human Leukocyte Function, Aline Cornelissen Dec 2000

In Vitro Effect Of Shark Cartilage On Human Leukocyte Function, Aline Cornelissen

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous in vitro studies have shown that shark cartilage extracts stimulate human leukocytes to release significant levels of TNFα, a cytokine typical of a Th1 immune response. The purpose of this study was to investigate further the effects of shark cartilage on cellular immune function, particularly cell proliferation, apoptosis, and IL-4 and INFγ production. The viability and proliferation of cell cultures grown in the presence of shark cartilage extract was not significantly different from unstimulated control cultures or those stimulated with mitogens (Con A, PMA, LPS), respectively. The effect of shark cartilage on apoptosis was determined by microscopic analysis of …

Theory, Period Styles, And Comparative Literature As Discipline, Slobodan Sucur Dec 2000

Theory, Period Styles, And Comparative Literature As Discipline, Slobodan Sucur

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Theory, Period Styles, and Comparative Literature as Discipline," Slobodan Sucur attempts to answer the following question: Can a rapprochement be brought about between various, often antagonistic, literary-theoretical views and the concept of comparative literature itself, which requires accord, consensus, agreement, etc., for it to function as a concrete body and discipline? Sucur attempts dealing with this question in three parts of the paper: First, he establishes a relationship/link between the theoretical discord of today (humanism, formalism, deconstruction, etc.) and the high theorizing which began during the Jena-Berlin phase of Romanticism (Shelling, Hegel, F. Schlegel, etc.); secondly, he …

Population-Based Survey Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Usage, Patient Satisfaction, And Physician Involvement, Robert Oldendick, Ann L. Coker, Darryl Wieland, James I. Raymond, Janice C. Probst, Bruce J. Schell, Carleen H. Stopskopf

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Background. With an increasing proportion of Americans using complementary or alternative medicine (CAM), physicians need to know which patients are using CAM to effectively manage care.

Methods. In this cross-sectional study, telephone interviews were conducted with 1,584 South Carolina adults (ages 18 and older); 66% responded to the survey of demographics, general health, frequency of CAM use, perceived CAM effectiveness, and physician knowledge of CAM use.

Results. A total of 44% had used a CAM during the past year. Increasing age and higher education were significantly associated with CAM use. More than 60% perceived CAM therapy as very effective, and …

Get Smart: The Rise Of Authoritarianism And Our Crackpot Culture, Kenneth Anderson

Book Reviews

Review of "Sleeping With Extra-Terrestrials: The Rise of Irrationalism and Perils of Piety", by Wendy Kaminer, Pantheon (2000)Abstract:This essay reviews a book by distinguished cultural critic Wendy Kaminer on the rise in American society of culturally and politically powerful forces of irrational belief that have become increasingly able to impose what amounts to their private pieties on the polity and the public square. Kaminer has a wide range of targets in mind, ranging across the religious and belief spectrum, from Christian creationists to New Age occultists. She argues that the prevalent multicultural ethic gives them ground to demand that their …

Reflexive Autopoietic Dissipative Special Systems Theory, Kent D. Palmer Jan 2000

Reflexive Autopoietic Dissipative Special Systems Theory, Kent D. Palmer

Kent D. Palmer

A newly discovered approach to extending General Systems Theory as defined by George Klir through a set of Special Systems is described. General Systems Theory is distinguished from the theory of Meta-systems. Then, a hinge of three special systems is identified between systems and meta-systems. These special systems are defined by algebraic analogies. Anomalous physical phenomena are specified that exemplify the structures defined by the algebraic analogies. The extraordinary efficacious properties of these special systems are explained. These include ultra-efficiency and ultra-effectiveness. These three special systems are called dissipative, autopoietic, and reflexive. They are anomalous within general systems theory and …

Oncology Nurses' Perceived Knowledge, Assessment, And Recommendation Of Alternative Therapies, Gudrun Kristofersdottir Jan 2000

Oncology Nurses' Perceived Knowledge, Assessment, And Recommendation Of Alternative Therapies, Gudrun Kristofersdottir

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Cancer patients use alternative therapies (ATs) frequently and often without the knowledge of their health care providers. The purpose of this study was to investigate oncology nurses' perceived knowledge of ATs, their level of assessment of the use of ATs by cancer patients, and what ATs they recommend to patients. The framework used to guide this study is the Neuman System Model. A descriptive survey design using a questionnaire listing 24 ATs was used to survey a random sample of nurses certified by the Oncology Nurses Certification Corporation in the Western region of the U.S. Results of the survey (n …

Nutritional Therapies For Ulcerative Colitis: Literature Review, Chart Review Study, And Future Research, Joel S. Edman, William (Bill) H. Williams, Robert C. Atkins

Publications and Research

Few clinical studies suggest a significant influence of diet or nutritional supplementation on ulcerative colitis. One reason is that ulcerative colitis, like many chronic diseases, is multifactorial. This article reviews the relevant literature and presents the results of a retrospective chart review study that was done at a complimentary medicine office.

The Bridge

This account of the life and activities of a Danish religious fanatic who played a significant role in emigration has been prepared on the basis of materials available in this country. Further items are available in Denmark, but on the basis of what is known to be available, it is doubtful that this would make any appreciable difference. To my knowledge, this is the only English language story of his life.

Conceptual Clarification And Policy-Related Science: The Case Of Chemical Hormesis, Kevin C. Elliott Jan 2000

Conceptual Clarification And Policy-Related Science: The Case Of Chemical Hormesis, Kevin C. Elliott

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the epistemological warrant for a toxicological phenomenon known as chemical hormesis. First, it argues that conceptual confusion contributes significantly to current disagreements about the status of chemical hormesis as a biological hypothesis. Second, it analyzes seven distinct concepts of chemical hormesis, arguing that none are completely satisfactory. Finally, it suggests three ramifications of this analysis for ongoing debates about the epistemological status of chemical hormesis. This serves as a case study supporting the value of philosophical methodologies such as conceptual clarification for addressing contemporary scientific disputes, including policy-related scientific disputes that may be heavily influencedby social and …

The Redesignment Of An Acute Inpatient Dual Diagnosis Unit, Irene Harris Griggs Jan 2000

The Redesignment Of An Acute Inpatient Dual Diagnosis Unit, Irene Harris Griggs

Theses

This project will focus on the study of mental illness and chemical abuse/dependence as it has progressed into the entity of dual diagnosis or what experts consider co-existing or co-occurring disorders.

Research has revealed the increase in the number of individuals suffering from co-occurring illnesses since the early 1980's. Because this condition has become the norm rather than the exception, it becomes necessary to focus more clearly on individuals that are diagnosed with this illness and on the most effective treatment in order to assist the individual in recovery.

Individuals have had co-existing or co-occurring disorders prior to the early …
