Sterilization In The United States: Prevalence And Controversies, Carey Brown
Sterilization In The United States: Prevalence And Controversies, Carey Brown
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There have been many breakthroughs in birth control technologies, many of which have been beneficial for women. However, many feminists who advocate reproductive freedom also warn that freedom for some might lead to further oppression for others. The case in point is the practice of tubal ligation in the United States. Conflict theory indicates that the field of medicine is a social structure that is based upon capitalistic ideology and serves to perpetuate inequality. Feminist theory argues that medicine systematically disempowers women and that notions of family are very narrowly defined. This study examined the prevalence of tubal ligation among …

Biological Inventory And Local Knowledge In Locating Medicinal Plants, September 1999, Amey Libman
Biological Inventory And Local Knowledge In Locating Medicinal Plants, September 1999, Amey Libman
Tropical Ecology and Conservation [Monteverde Institute]
Plants are an extremely important contributor to many medicines throughout the world. Because of the amount of forest destruction that is occurring, it is becoming important to find a rapid way to assess forests for their potential of having medicinal plants. Two such methods for assessing areas for medicinal plants, chemotaxonomic and ethnopharmacological are discussed in this paper. A biological survey of an area of premontane wet forest in Monteverde, and interviews of local people were done to compare which would better assess possible medicinal plants in the area. The end result indicates that the biological inventory would be the …
The Effect Of Chelation Therapy Upon The Perceptual Quality Of Life And The Perception Of Pain In Clients Receiving Infusions, Francine Glenn
The Effect Of Chelation Therapy Upon The Perceptual Quality Of Life And The Perception Of Pain In Clients Receiving Infusions, Francine Glenn
MSN Research Projects
The use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for chelation in patients with diseases of the circulatory system has been a controversial issue for several decades. However, there was a lack of studies substantiating the perceived benefits of patients receiving chelation therapy. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect on pain and perceived benefits related to the quality of life for patients receiving chelation infusions. The theoretical framework that guided this study was the Health Promotion Model developed by Nola J. Pender. The research questions were what are the effects of chelation therapy on the perceptual quality of life …

This paper investigates the effects of the independent variables, age, exposure to acupuncture, knowledge of acupuncture, level of religiosity, physician referrals for acupuncture and physicians type of practice on the dependent variable, opinion of acupuncture. Using bivariate cross-tabulations, gamma and linear regression analysis, exposure, knowledge and physician referrals were found to have a significant relationship with opinion of acupuncture. The self-administered questionnaire was mailed to all physicians and surgeons of the Bloomington! Normal IL community who were listed in the April 1998 GTE phonebook. Respondent's ages ranged from 29 to 95 years old, the mean equaling 46.4 years old. Four …

Heated debate with dear colleagues about the acceptability of politics of recognition of "alternative" medicine (homeopathy, etc.). Koen Raes and I defend the position that it is not because something is not "scientifically proven" it should not be regulated by government.

To Immunize Or Not To Immunize, That Is The Question! An Investigation Into The Reasons Behind Parents' Decisions In Immunizing Their Children Against Whooping Cough In Western Australia, Eliena Kirov
Theses : Honours
Demographic data on the immunization status of Australia indicates that Western Australia has relatively low immunization coverage for whooping cough. Australian quantitative studies have been carried out on parental attitudes in Australia towards immunization, but there has been no analysis of parents' reasons for their decisions. This study identified the key issues that influenced the decisions made by the target group of parents and explored their decision-making in more depth. The data from this study could also be used to supplement the information currently available to health workers. Eight participants with children between the ages of 2 months and 6 …
