Wholistic Healing: The Physician Perspective Of The Tibetan Medical Philosophy, Emma J. Brooks
Wholistic Healing: The Physician Perspective Of The Tibetan Medical Philosophy, Emma J. Brooks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In Western medicine, anatomy is divided into multiple disciplines with specialists focused on their specialization, thereby limiting the whole system medical approach within the diagnosis, practice, and treatment of illness. The purpose of this qualitative study with an emergent design was to explore how physicians of Tibetan medicine viewed treating the whole person through the lens of Sowa Rigpa. Inquiry and analytical thinking were viewed through the lens of Otto and Knight’s principles of wholistic healing, Wilber’s integral model, and the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty. Phase I consisted of key informant interviews with four participants that were recent graduates of Tibetan …

Relationship Changes Of African Americans With Nontraditional Spiritual Practices, Della Sanders
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have explored the subject of belongingness for decades. However, there is limited research on how belongingness may change for African Americans who transitioned from traditional Christianity to other spiritual practices. In this study, the relationship changes (in terms of family, friends, significant others, and former church relationships) of African Americans who identify as spiritual but not religious (SBNR) after leaving traditional Christianity were explored. The theoretical framework of the social connectedness theory was used to explore the need for belongingness to avoid social isolation and loneliness within a social network. Six African American Generation Xers, four women and two …

Perceptions Of Using Complementary Alternative Medicine During Pregnancy For Nausea And Vomiting, Debra L. Blackett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nausea Vomiting during Pregnancy (NVP) conditions have commonly occurred among pregnant women during gestation for more than 4,000 years. The purpose of the multicase qualitative design was to examine and improve the understanding of perceptions of pregnant women experiencing nausea and the potential use of Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) modalities to treat NVP symptoms. In this study, the Health Belief Model six core constructs provided the foundation for the theoretical framework for the process, explaining how working pregnant women experience decision-making and relate to the daily challenges associated with pregnancy. The research questions examined experience of coping with NVP and …
Methods To Increase The Rate Of Childhood Vaccinating, Mary Beth Tillman
Methods To Increase The Rate Of Childhood Vaccinating, Mary Beth Tillman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Vaccinations such as polio, diphtheria, varicella, and meningitis help to protect a child from life-threatening illnesses which have previously been contained by routine vaccinations. However, misinformation, negative press, and other contributing factors, have influenced caregivers to refuse to vaccinate their children placing the children at risk for contracting the disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends regular vaccinations for children beginning as newborns, yet the vaccination rate remains below acceptable levels. This project was developed to provide an educational program guided by Orem’s self-care theory and intended to increase nurses’ knowledge of vaccination and ultimately vaccination rates. A …
Association Between Age Of Women When Diagnosed With Endometriosis And Infertility, Whitney Kennedy
Association Between Age Of Women When Diagnosed With Endometriosis And Infertility, Whitney Kennedy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract
Because endometriosis is considered to be the primary cause of infertility in women and
the diagnosis is known to be delayed by many years, it is important to understand the
association between endometriosis and infertility. The purpose of this cross-sectional,
secondary data analysis study was to determine whether there was an association between
the age of women when diagnosed with endometriosis and infertility. Using the general
model of total patient delay (i.e., the Andersen model) as a theoretical foundation, data
for this study was collected by assessing patient medical records of women with
endometriosis at multiple OB-GYN clinics in …

Emerging Diabetes Pandemic In India: A Case Study For An Integrative Approach, Chhaya Sanjeev Chaudhry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Every day, India sees the addition of 5,000 new cases of diabetes to its current diabetic population of 65 million people. This number is projected to cross the 100 million mark in 15 years. The emerging pandemic scale of diabetes growth is straining India's already-overburdened public healthcare resources. India is home to several well-established native and adapted foreign traditions of medicine that are widely practiced. These traditions include Ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha, and homeopathy. The modern and traditional medicine approaches are extensively used as independent systems. The purpose of this qualitative research case study was to evaluate the …
Physician Decision Criteria Regarding Omega-3 Dietary Supplements, Warren P. Lesser
Physician Decision Criteria Regarding Omega-3 Dietary Supplements, Warren P. Lesser
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
American Heart Association officials and other expert cardiologists recommend omega-3 (n-3) dietary supplementation for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, a prevalent health problem in the United States. Physicians' lack of understanding of possible n-3 preventive health benefits results in underprescribing n-3 dietary supplements and lower n-3 dietary supplement product sales. N-3 dietary supplement marketers do not understand physician n-3 prescribing decision criteria enough to optimize high-impact communication to physicians to increase n-3 dietary supplement product use. The purpose of this phenomenological research study was to improve n-3 marketers' understanding of how physicians reach decisions to prescribe or recommend products …
A Synthesized Model Of Compliance Based On Physician And Patient Reported Barriers To Hypertension Guidelines, Pamela Ballou-Nelson
A Synthesized Model Of Compliance Based On Physician And Patient Reported Barriers To Hypertension Guidelines, Pamela Ballou-Nelson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hypertension affects as many as 50-70 million Americans; early and consistent compliance to hypertension guidelines is important to prevent heart attack and stroke, both leading causes of death in the United States. Despite the advances in medicine and health-care technology, the effectiveness with which hypertension is managed at the individual and community level is less than optimal. The research questions in this study addressed the lack of physician compliance to hypertension guidelines and why patients fail to follow guidelines. Improving hypertension management depends on bridging the gap between physician awareness of evidence-based guidelines and patient compliance. Grounded theory was used …
