A Review Of Horticultural Therapy And Horticultural Therapy Education In The United States: Addressing Challenges And Opportunities, Derrick R. Stowell Dec 2020

A Review Of Horticultural Therapy And Horticultural Therapy Education In The United States: Addressing Challenges And Opportunities, Derrick R. Stowell

Doctoral Dissertations

The Horticultural Therapy (HT) profession has been formally organized in the United States since 1973. Despite the long history of horticulture being used as therapy, the profession of HT in the United States has not advanced as quickly as other allied healthcare professions. This study will review the current challenges and opportunities for HT and HT education in the United States.

A qualitative study of the status of the profession was conducted to determine what challenges and opportunities the profession of HT currently has and how the profession can meet those challenges and opportunities. The study sample was recruited from …

The Horn Fly And Its Association With Milk Yield, Milk Quality, And Staphylococcus Mastitis In Organic Dairy Herds, Emily Luc Aug 2020

The Horn Fly And Its Association With Milk Yield, Milk Quality, And Staphylococcus Mastitis In Organic Dairy Herds, Emily Luc

Masters Theses

Summer mastitis continues to be a challenge on many dairy farms. Greater understanding of the factors affecting mastitis will aid in developing management programs. Mastitis and fly populations both increase during the summer months, but the relationship between the two is unknown in lactating dairy cows housed partly or fully on pasture. Our objectives were to 1) determine the association between horn fly numbers, somatic cell count (SCC), and milk yield on organic dairy herds and 2) identify specific Staphylococcus mastitis pathogens (Staph. aureus, Staph. chromogenes, Staph. hyicus and Staph. agnetis) in quarter milk samples and …

An Integrative Healthcare Program For Cancer Patients: Longitudinal Effects On Emotional Health And Immune Function, Rebecca Shorter May 2019

An Integrative Healthcare Program For Cancer Patients: Longitudinal Effects On Emotional Health And Immune Function, Rebecca Shorter

Doctoral Dissertations

Evidence supports potential short-term benefits of integrative healthcare (IH) for cancer patients, which combines conventional Western medicine with adjunctive, complementary treatments; however, the long-term efficacy of IH has not been systematically studied. The current study examined the short- and long-term effectiveness of IH for cancer patients, relative to treatment as usual (TAU), in improving emotional and immune health. Also examined were systematic differences at baseline (i.e., emotional distress, sociodemographic and cancer variables) associated with IH usage. Patients were recruited from a University Medical Center (n = 178) and were eligible to participate irrespective of cancer diagnosis and stage. Patients opted …

Epidemiology Of Veterinary Antimicrobial Use In Tennessee And Strategies For Antimicrobial Stewardship, John Eddie Ekakoro Dec 2018

Epidemiology Of Veterinary Antimicrobial Use In Tennessee And Strategies For Antimicrobial Stewardship, John Eddie Ekakoro

Doctoral Dissertations

Antimicrobial drugs are used for maintaining or improving animal health. Non-judicious antimicrobial use (AMU) is a modifiable factor driving antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Using qualitative and quantitative approaches, this doctoral dissertation examined the epidemiology of veterinary AMU among clinicians at The University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center (UTVMC), and cattle producers in Tennessee (TN), and identified strategies for antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). First, an online survey was sent to UTVMC clinicians to identify factors influencing their AMU practices, analyze their concerns regarding AMU and AMR. Compared to clinicians who obtained their veterinary degree from 1970–1999, those who graduated from 2000–2009 and 2010–2016 …

Protest Through Reification Of The System In Contemporary Health Policy Fiction, David A. Rochefort Ph.D. Jul 2014

Protest Through Reification Of The System In Contemporary Health Policy Fiction, David A. Rochefort Ph.D.

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

“Issue novels” employ a variety of writing devices to inform and to persuade readers about the nature of social problems and their impacts. One distinctive means by which contemporary health care has been portrayed within fiction is through a reification of the “system.” In effect, the system itself becomes a main character within the narrative, one whose motivations, stratagems, values, and behavioral patterns create fateful consequences for all other actors. It is the “personality” of this system that defines the source of disadvantage and oppression for those subject to its whims, as well as the challenges to be overcome by …

Clinical Use Of Placebos: Medicine, Neuroscience, Ethics And The Law, Steven B. Perlmutter May 2014

Clinical Use Of Placebos: Medicine, Neuroscience, Ethics And The Law, Steven B. Perlmutter

Tennessee Journal of Law and Policy

When I am sick, I go to my doctor. She takes a history, does a physical examination, and tells me what is wrong. I expect that she will tell me what medicine to take, what exercises to do, what to eat or what surgery is needed. I want an answer and a solution. My thinking can be summed up in just one phrase, "Fix it!" But what if there is no medicine, no treatment, nothing to do about the condition? What then? I still want some remedy that will help me. My doctor wants me to be satisfied with her …

Effects Of Environmental Stress On Growth, Yield, And Flavonolignan Content In Milk Thistle Silybum Marianum L. Gaertn, Amy Renae Belitz Dec 2007

Effects Of Environmental Stress On Growth, Yield, And Flavonolignan Content In Milk Thistle Silybum Marianum L. Gaertn, Amy Renae Belitz

Masters Theses

Four experiments were performed in a greenhouse or growth chamber to study the quantity and quality of flavonolignans in response to environmental stress in milk thistle (Silybum marianum L., Gaertn.). A preliminary experiment was conducted in spring 2004 to study effects of leaf harvests on growth, development, and flavonolignan content in milk thistle seeds. Taxifolin, a component of silymarin and precursor to flavonolignans, was significantly reduced due to leaf harvest treatments.

The weedy nature (sporadic germination) of Silybum made germinating enough plants for experimentation problematic. Initial germination studies to determine imbibition and pre-chilling requirements were inconclusive due to heavy …

Acupuncture Use For Pain As Compared To Other Complementary And Alternative Medicine And Conventional Medicine, Elizabeth Susan Mcgrady Aug 2005

Acupuncture Use For Pain As Compared To Other Complementary And Alternative Medicine And Conventional Medicine, Elizabeth Susan Mcgrady

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to determine the factors associated with the use of acupuncture for pain and to compare these factors to the use of other complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and conventional medical services. The treatment of pain is expensive. In addition, use of surgery and medication increases risk of medical errors, complications, side effects and addiction. Clinical trials of acupuncture for pain have demonstrated results at least as effective as conventional treatments with negligible side effects and complications. Only 4% of the United States population has used acupuncture. The healthcare field is studying means to predict …

Some Aspects Of Vitamin E And Collagen Relationships, Robert Glenn Brown Aug 1964

Some Aspects Of Vitamin E And Collagen Relationships, Robert Glenn Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

(From the Introduction)

Several clinical workers in the later 1930's reported that vitamin E was of positive therapeutic value in the treatment of primary fibrositis. At that time a role for vitamin E in connective tissue metabolism was proposed. This role was never substantiated because of the failure of other groups to repeat the original work. It was subseqently realized that the original experiments were very poorly controlled and there was no real way of knowing whether or not the results obtained were due only to chance. Since that time the idea of a vitamin E, collagen relationship …
