Due to the nursing shortage in Sri Lanka, patients need informal caregivers, known as bystanders, to help provide patient care. This study described bystanders’ perspectives on informal, hospital-based care to bedridden patients with cancer in Sri Lanka. In this qualitative descriptive study, 17 bystanders at Apeksa/Cancer Hospital, Sri Lanka, were recruited using snowballing sampling. Data were collected through telephone interviews and analyzed using content and thematic analyses. Findings showed that paid and unpaid bystanders cover all caregiving tasks with minimum interaction with nurses. Unpaid bystanders described the need for same-sex bystanders and additional help with patients’ mobilization and specialized care. …

This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of a massage therapy intervention for pediatric palliative care patients and their adult caregivers to reduce their symptom impact at an urban pediatric hospital in Omaha, NE. Potential symptoms to be impacted by massage included stress for caregivers and pain, nausea, dyspnea, and anxiety for children. One hundred and thirty five massages were delivered to patients and caregivers in the PICU, NICU, and the inpatient hospital floor during the course of this non-randomized, pre-post study. This PhD thesis seeks to contribute to a nuanced understanding of positive body image and how it is expressed among a group of women participating in holistic health culture in a modern Western society. Qualitative data were collected from in-depth ethnographic interviews with 25 women in Perth, Western Australia, to illuminate an understanding of their holistic health beliefs and practices, perceptions of appearance and health ideals, as well as their understandings of positive body image. To date, literature exploring maternal healthcare utilization among Muslim populations has largely focused on religious differences. However, little research exists exploring maternal healthcare utilization within Muslim populations. This highlights a research gap because studies across religious groups may obscure important variation within Islamic women. The primary objective of this study assessed if there is equity in MHU among Muslim mothers in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The purpose of this capstone project is to analyze the quality improvement data that was collected in order to increase the pediatric population at the University of Kentucky Department of Family and Community Medicine clinic at Turfland. There were three different patient populations that were surveyed: reproductive aged women between 18 and 40, parents of the pediatric population that the clinic saw between July 2014 and June 2015, and pregnant women between July 2014 and June 2015. Facilitating muscle recovery in trained individuals is essential, as it allows for a quicker return to activity without reduction in performance. Many proposed modalities have been studied but have not shown consistent effectiveness. A relatively new modality, whole-body vibration (WBV) has been shown to increase strength and power outcomes and recently has been shown to decrease perceived pain associated with muscle soreness.
