Il-17a And The Receptor Are Regulated By Runx3 During Fracture Healing, Satoko Matsumura
Il-17a And The Receptor Are Regulated By Runx3 During Fracture Healing, Satoko Matsumura
Master's Theses
Enhancing bone repair is the key process which facilitates the improvement of fracture healing outcomes. Despite of many studies regarding osteogenesis induction, Bone morphogenetic proteins-2 (BMP-2) and Platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) are still the only two the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatment1, 2. To develop potential treatment modalities, it is essential to understand the role of transcription factors in fracture healing and how they may be specifically targeted in preclinical models to enhance bone regeneration. While the Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) is known to play a crucial role in osteoblastogenesis, the role of Runx3, a homologue …

Selection Criteria And Referral Patterns Of Clinicians Utilizing Cbct At Uconn Health Center, Jenna Fewins
Master's Theses
The most recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA)/American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines on dental radiograph examinations were released in 2012.1 Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a three dimensional radiographic exam first introduced in the in the early 2000s.7 In the 2012 guidelines, CBCT was excluded from the criteria; the guidelines were meant only for “standard dental imaging techniques of intraoral and common extraoral examinations, excluding cone-beam computed tomography.”1
CBCT is in the armamentarium of radiographs utilized in general dentistry and can be ordered by a dentist, a dental specialist, or dental student. There is a large …
The Role Of Bmp Signaling In Mediating Stimulatory Effects Of Fgf-Fgfr Signaling On Odontoblast Differentiation In Dental Pulp, Karen Sagomonyants
The Role Of Bmp Signaling In Mediating Stimulatory Effects Of Fgf-Fgfr Signaling On Odontoblast Differentiation In Dental Pulp, Karen Sagomonyants
Master's Theses
Odontoblast differentiation is dependent on multiple signaling molecules, including growth factors stored in the extracellular dentin matrix. Our previous studies have demonstrated that Fibroblast Growth Factor 2 (FGF2) exerted stage-specific effects on odontoblast differentiation in primary dental pulp cultures. FGF2 stimulated differentiation of functional odontoblasts expressing high levels of Dmp1 from early progenitors but inhibited the terminal differentiation of functional odontoblasts to fully differentiated odontoblasts expressing high levels of Dspp. These stimulatory effects involved activation of FGFR and ERK1/2, and increased levels of expression of Bmp2, Runx2, and Osx (components of BMP signaling) suggesting the involvement of …

Conservative Endodontic Access – Cone Beam Computed Tomography (Cbct)-Guided Preparation And Its Impact On Endodontic Referrals, Jeremiah M. Granados
Master's Theses
Conservative endodontic access (CEA) results in minimal access in comparison to traditional endodontic access (TEA) which is defined as straight-line access. Our survey suggested that while 81% of general dentists would prefer to restore a tooth that received a CEA preparation, only 33% considered it a determining factor for their endodontic referrals (100 out of 129 responded: Response rate 77.52%). To test our hypothesis that CBCT images aid endodontists in CEA preparation, 45 extracted molars were accessed by one endodontic resident using techniques of TEA (Group A), CEA (Group B) or CEA with preoperative CBCT images provided (Group C)(n=15 per …
An Examination Of Daily Dietary Intake And Swallow Function In An Older Adult Population, Lillian A. Barone
An Examination Of Daily Dietary Intake And Swallow Function In An Older Adult Population, Lillian A. Barone
Master's Theses
This study aims to determine the relationship, if any, of daily dietary intake of adult individuals living independently in the community and swallow function/ dysfunction. It appears that individuals modify their diet as they age and the correlation between this awareness of diet modification and dysphagia is unclear. Using the Yale Swallow Protocol and a study specific questionnaire, this relationship was examined. The results indicate future research should focus on the bi-directional relationship between malnutrition and dysphagia in the aging, community dwelling population.

Alginate Hydrogels For Bone Tissue Regeneration, Stephanie T. Bendtsen
Alginate Hydrogels For Bone Tissue Regeneration, Stephanie T. Bendtsen
Doctoral Dissertations
Bone tissue engineering is employed to help enhance regeneration of bone tissue that may have difficulty of achieving sufficient healing on its own. As bones tend to break in irregular manners, methods to produce engineered scaffolds more closely fitting the geometry of the defective tissue are desirable. Current techniques to produce engineered bone tissue constructs result in stiff, rigid scaffolds with limited plasticity and ability to form irregular architectures. Additionally, processing methods limit the feasibility to uniformly incorporate live cells into the scaffolds for enhanced uniform healing. The use of hydrogel materials for bone tissue engineering has gained interest due …
From The Science Of Nanorod Growth To Low Temperature Metallic Attachment, Paul R. Elliott
From The Science Of Nanorod Growth To Low Temperature Metallic Attachment, Paul R. Elliott
Doctoral Dissertations
To move nanotechnology out of the lab and into common use requires understanding and experience of the structures and processes involved. The technological maturity allowing the widespread use of nanotechnology is practically nonexistent outside of the integrated circuit industry. This work provides a synergy of the science of nanorod growth and the technology of metallic glue in ambient. Starting from the science, this thesis presents the design and control of the structure and morphology of nanorods grown by physical vapor deposition. We demonstrate the use of deposited seeds as a method to control the diameter and spacing of surface grown …

Mankind’s greatest attribute is the capability of higher order intellect being applied to prolonging life and improving one’s overall health. Modern medicine and the research therein has created opportunities to understand and combat disease at incredible levels. Yet, some of the most befuddling diseases are ones that our own bodies inheritably produce. Autoimmune disease is a condition in which the body’s own defense mechanisms begin to target healthy cells as if they were foreign threats. Cancer is a condition in which abnormal cell growth can spread throughout the body and begin to shut down vital bodily functions. Medicinal chemistry has …
