Stress Urinary Incontinence In The Human Female: Gravity And Ecomorphologic Influences On Bladder And Urethral Function Of The Human Female, C. Paul Hodgkinson

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This study was undertaken to determine if the biped stale of the human female constituted a stress force in urethrovesical physiological function. To arrive at realistic conclusions, the ecomorphologic changes incidental to the conquest of gravity by the vertebrates have been reviewed. Accepting the evolutionary precepts as expressed by Hobart Smith that "if all parts of the evolutionary chain were known, it would be impossible to draw a logical distinction between man and nonman, Romer slated "Bone for bone, muscle for muscle, organ for organ, almost every feature of the ape is repeated in the human body. The differences are …

Studies Of The Electrical Parameters And Behavioral Effects Of An Eeg ''Seizure Discharge", W. R. Mccrum, R. M. Lee, H. Van Den Ende, L. D. Proctor, J. A. Lee

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Nemastrina monkeys with multiple electrodes implanted in the amygdaloid area of the brain were used to study the relationship of electrical seizures and overt behavior. The electrical seizures were produced by long duration electrical pulses administered through the implanted electrodes. There appears to be no relationship between this kind of electrical seizure and lever pressing performance. Relationships between depth EEG, depth impedance, DC potential and surface EEG are observed and as a consequence some ideas concerning the genesis of the electroencephalogram are put forth.

Word Ways

When I was but thirteen or so, my seventh grade teacher, Milicent Whippoorwill, first acquainted me with the old spelling rule:

I before E,
Except after C,
Or when sounding as A,
As in "neighbor" and "weigh."

Miss Whippoorwill also used to encourage us to anagram words, in order that we might become more familiar with their spelling.

Parent-Child Immunity: The Case For Abolition, Christine V. Pate May 1969

Parent-Child Immunity: The Case For Abolition, Christine V. Pate

San Diego Law Review

"However repugnant it may seem that a minor child should sue his own father, it is equally repugnant that a child injured by his parent's negligence, perhaps maimed for life should have no redress for the injury he has suffered." This anomaly exists today in the majority of jurisdictions which recognize the parent-child immunity. The origins of this rule, its exceptions and its present status nationwide and in California reflect a judicial determination not to interfere with the basic unit of our society, the family.

Investigations On Congenital And Induced Osteopetrosis, Donald G. Walker Jan 1969

Investigations On Congenital And Induced Osteopetrosis, Donald G. Walker

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Osteopetrosis, or marble bone disease, is a disturbance of skeletal development in which the rate of bone resorption fails to keep pace with the rate of bone formation. Bone matrix accumulates excessively throughout the skeletal system, causing damage to neighboring tissues--particularly the dental, hematopoietic and nervous tissues. The line of investigation on osteopetrosis which has led to the current point of view that the thyroid gland represents the primary side of the disturbance was initiated soon after an experimental animal became available.

On The Antiquity Of Man, Roland Schmidt Jan 1969

On The Antiquity Of Man, Roland Schmidt

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Man is now lord of the earth and of the beasts and flowers, but he took millions of years to achieve his dominion. Two events more than others made man capable of his exercise of power. 1) A slowly achieved adaptation of man himself increased his potentialities far beyond those of other animals. The first step was man's gradual assumption of the erect posture. This put him on his peculiarly successful evolutionary path. It freed his hands and opened the way for the development of the central nervous system which made man unique in his capabilities. 2) A late revolution …

The Role Of Operations Research In A University Hospital: A Review And Bibliography, S. J. Kilpatrick Jr. Jan 1969

The Role Of Operations Research In A University Hospital: A Review And Bibliography, S. J. Kilpatrick Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In the 1968 Annual Report of the Medical College of Virginia (Bulletin, 1968, pp8,18) the shortage of trained medical personnel is stressed as a serious problem in the care of the sick. As a result of this personnel shortage, approximately 100 beds have recently been closed in the University Hospital. This underlies the need for large medical centers to use O.R. techniques in developing more efficient use of existing medical personnel and in seeking cost reductions while increasing the quality and coverage of medical care. When the medical center is a component of an urban university, both urban and medical …

The Abused Child: Problems And Proposals, Harvey J. Eger, Anthony J. Popeck Jan 1969

The Abused Child: Problems And Proposals, Harvey J. Eger, Anthony J. Popeck

Duquesne Law Review

In 1962 a team of physicians led by Dr. C. Henry Kempe identified problem they called "the battered child syndrome." The Kempe study defined the problem as a clinical condition in young children who have received serious physical abuse from a parent or foster parent. Graham Parker, a student of the syndrome, defined the battered child as "one who has suffered serious physical injury in circumstances which indicate it was caused wilfully [sic] rather than by accident." Later students have distinguished the battered or abused child from the neglected child and have begun to inquire into the psychological condition of …
