What 2017 Holds For Technology In Dentistry, Arshi Siddiqui

Honors College Theses

Dentistry in the United States is a field that grows and expands based on the needs of its consumers. This paper aims to highlight this very versatility through the analysis of specific demographics of dental practitioners, consumers, and the changes in technology that are predicted for the future of dentistry. With the rise of Generation X and the Millennial Generation, dentistry will undergo many changes alongside the rise of technology throughout the recent years. More evidently, the population is undergoing a very seismic shift in the way they view themselves. Because people are harboring more of an individualistic mindset, the …

The Analytical Methods Used To Detect Fluoride In Dental Pharmaceuticals, Amber Aboona Dec 2017

The Analytical Methods Used To Detect Fluoride In Dental Pharmaceuticals, Amber Aboona

Honors College Theses

My thesis, “The Analytical Methods Used to Detect Fluoride in Dental Pharmaceuticals” discusses the various analytical chemistry methods which are incorporated in the field of dentistry in order to detect fluoride in pharmaceuticals such as toothpaste and mouthwash. The oral cavity is exposed to various forms of bacteria, many of which enter through the consumption of foods and drinks that contain sugar and starch. The side effects of fluoride have been a controversial component of oral healthcare, however, many benefits have been discussed. Water fluoridation has been one of many significant methods of incorporating fluoride into the oral cavity, enhancing …

Recognizing And Addressing The Oral Health Needs Of Georgia, Carole Hanes, Ketarya Hunt, Stephanie Perry Apr 2017

Recognizing And Addressing The Oral Health Needs Of Georgia, Carole Hanes, Ketarya Hunt, Stephanie Perry

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: The intent of this report is to provide an assessment of oral health needs for Georgia and to highlight the efforts underway at the Dental College of Georgia (DCG) at Augusta University to address these needs. In underserved areas of Georgia, the burden of untreated oral disease remains high. Because of in-migration and the inadequate availability of educational programs, the population continues to grow faster than the number of health care providers.

Methods: An overview of the oral health needs in Georgia is provided, along with a review of the ongoing outreach by the DCG to address those oral …

Faculty And Staff Perceptions Of Interprofessional Education: A Comparative Survey Of Dental And Health Science/Nursing Faculty And Staff, Tabitha Nicole Fair Jan 2017

Faculty And Staff Perceptions Of Interprofessional Education: A Comparative Survey Of Dental And Health Science/Nursing Faculty And Staff, Tabitha Nicole Fair

Health Sciences Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Research has shown a strong correlation between oral and systemic disease; therefore, there is an increased need for collaboration between dental and medical professionals. The purpose of this study was to examine the current opportunities that exist for interprofessional education (IPE) at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), the perceived need for IPE for dental and health science/nursing students, the perceived advantages of an IPE program, the features that should be included in an IPE program, and the perceived administrative and financial barriers to increased interprofessional activities. This study surveyed graduate faculty and staff from NSU’s College of Health Care Sciences, College …

The practice of dentistry is physically demanding due to static and dynamic postures sustained daily throughout careers. Previous literature suggests that work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) are not solely the result of work habits, but also due to the individual, his or her physical makeup, genetics, and …

Dentists As Clinician Managers: Leadership Influences On Dental Team Empowerment And Engagement, Scott Hinckley Craven Jan 2017

Dentists As Clinician Managers: Leadership Influences On Dental Team Empowerment And Engagement, Scott Hinckley Craven

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Leadership training is virtually nonexistent for dental students, and practicing dentists rarely engage in any form of leadership development, relying primarily on mentoring by senior colleagues and on-the-job experiences. Dentists serve in a hybrid role as clinicians and managers to provide quality dental care and establish a profitable business, respectively. This quantitative study investigated the ways in which the emotional intelligence (EI) and leadership styles of 16 dentist clinician managers (DCMs) affected their dental teams. Specifically, the effects of leadership style and EI of DCMs on individual psychological empowerment (PE), team PE, and employee engagement were explored. Team PE effects …

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objectives The aim of this study is to evaluate the technical image quality and radiation dose of the DentiiScan 2.0 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanner before widespread clinical use. Materials and methods Image quality was measured for 4 scanning protocols of the DentiiScan 2.0, using 2 dedicated test objects: the SEDENTEXCT IQ phantom and the QRM-ConeBeam phantom. The following image quality parameters were evaluated: contrast-detail, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), spatial resolution, grey value uniformity, metal artefacts, and geometric accuracy. Radiation dose was measured using a calibrated ionization chamber placed at the isocenter of rotation, allowing for the calculation of the dose-area …

Use Of Clonidine In Sedation Dentistry, Asma Kumar Jan 2017

Use Of Clonidine In Sedation Dentistry, Asma Kumar

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Background:

Clonidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist which has been used to treat hypertension for over 40 years. In October 2008, clonidine was approved by the FDA for use as a premedication agent prior to sedation. The overall goal of this study is to determine if clonidine can be used as a pre- operative sedative agent in moderate sedation dentistry and if so, what should be considered a safe level.

The following specific aims were established for this study:

  1. To determine whether patients receiving clonidine required less intravenous medications.
  2. To determine if clonidine can lower blood pressure and pulse to …
