The treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) allows for a multidisciplinary approach between dentistry and medicine. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the gold standard for OSA treatment, but the non-adherence rates are high. The mandibular advancement device (MAD) has a higher acceptance rate than the CPAP, however the efficacy is much lower in cases of moderate to severe OSA. This thesis attempted to evaluate if there was a change in compliance when a MAD was added as a combination therapy to moderate to severe OSA subjects that were currently non-compliant with their CPAP. Purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of mechanical vibration on pain experienced and rate of tooth movement (OTM) during the initial alignment phase of orthodontic treatment.

Materials and Methods: Participants were randomly allocated to control, low frequency or high frequency. An electric toothbrush was modified to provide high frequency vibration. A low frequency vibration device was acquired from a commercial vendor. Experimental groups applied vibration to the dentition for 20 minutes daily. Midwest Gastrointestinal Associates (MGI) is a private clinic in Omaha, Nebraska that reached out to the College of Public Health for assistance in the clinic’s employee wellness program. An MPH student with a background in health and wellness provided MGI with a health promotion intervention to increase employee participation rates. A change was made to the wellness program in 2017 away from monthly health challenges and points—to small gifts distributed to all employees to increase engagement and morale. The objective of this project is to explore historical, cultural, and healthcare utilization factors that are significant to healthcare providers in their practice to clinically treat refugee patients holistically and equitably. Semi-structured interviews supported by a pre-interview questionnaire were conducted with 14 healthcare providers, who have experience in working with refugee patients. Purposive and snowball sampling method was used to recruit 14 healthcare providers. Thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. Descriptive analysis was performed on the pre-interview questionnaire results. Since 1992, Women, Infants, and Children at the Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department has provided supplemental food benefits, nutrition information, breastfeeding support, immunization referrals, and dental services to support low-income families and their children. However, statewide, the retention rate has been dropping since 2009, and if this continues, it can result in adverse health outcomes. As part of the Service Learning activities, this study aims to evaluate current services on clients’ experiences and improve their satisfaction by conducting the WIC participant-centered services survey. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) produces profound and lasting neuroinflammation that has both beneficial and detrimental effects. Recent evidence has implicated microRNAs (miRNAs) in the regulation of inflammation both in the periphery and the CNS. We examined the expression of inflammation associated miRNAs in the context of TBI using a mouse controlled cortical impact (CCI) model and found increased levels of miR-21, miR-223 and miR-155 in the hippocampus after CCI. The expression of miR-155 was elevated 9-fold after CCI, an increase confirmed by in situ hybridization (ISH). Interestingly, expression of miR-155 was largely found in neuronal nuclei as evidenced by co-localization …

A growing body of research has examined career satisfaction among dentists using a standardized instrument, dentist satisfaction survey (DSS). This project examined career satisfaction of early to mid-career dentists in China, a population whose career satisfaction, heretofore, has not been studied. This is an especially critical time to examine career satisfaction because of health care reform measures being implemented in China. A culturally sensitive Chinese-language version of the DSS (CDSS) was developed and electronically administered to 367 early and mid-career dentists in a tertiary dental hospital in Beijing, China. The goal of this project was to identify and quantify the anatomical variations of the sciatic nerve divisions in relation to the piriformis muscle and compare the data collected to the primary literature. This was done in an effort to provide awareness of sciatic nerve entrapments within the subgluteal space that may be responsible for posterior hip and buttock pain. While the current means of diagnosis are through physical examination, imaging techniques, and surgery, the results of this present study indicate that new methods of diagnosis need to be explored.

Population health management (PHM) is used to identify the needs of a population and to align strategies to improve the health of the population through care coordination. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 emphasized the meaningful use (MU) of electronic health records (EHRs) to improve clinical and population health outcomes. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 approved the EHRs incentives program for eligible hospitals to demonstrate the MU of EHRs. BACKGROUND: Recommendations for vitamin D supplementation for preterm infants span a wide range of doses. Response to vitamin D supplementation and impact on outcomes in preterm infants is not well understood.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate serum 25(OH)D3 concentration changes after 4 weeks in response to two different doses of vitamin D3 supplementation in a population of premature infants and quantify the impact on NICU outcomes.

DESIGN: 32 infants born at 24-32 weeks gestation were prospectively randomized to receive 400 or 800 IU/day vitamin D3 supplementation. Serum 25(OH)D3 levels were measured every 4 weeks. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare …
