Effects Of Computers On Patient Care, Jay Goldman Jan 1966

Effects Of Computers On Patient Care, Jay Goldman

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In conclusion, the computer alone is not enough to provide the best possible patient care. Every hospital must be introspective about each patient-care system so that the performance aspects of the systems are meaningful and efficient. Couple the best methods of performance with the information processing and control capabilities offered by the computer, and one can envision a smoothly functioning patient-care complex in which the wild perturbations one sees in today's hospital operation are minimized. However, medical care finds itself in an awkward dichotomy. Many of the causes of system perturbation in the hospital are directly related to the demands …

A Tissue Culture Perfusion Chamber With A Substratum Of Reconstituted Collagen, Thomas M. Harris Jan 1966

A Tissue Culture Perfusion Chamber With A Substratum Of Reconstituted Collagen, Thomas M. Harris

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

A tissue culture chamber is described that introduces the concept of a fixed platform within a "perfusion type" chamber. The platform is made of stainless steel mesh covered with a membrane of reconstituted collagen. The collagen membrane serves as the supporting substratum for the cultured tissue and is of such an optical quality as to permit phase-contrast microscopic observation of the tissue. The perfusion chamber is a Sykes-Moore tissue culture chamber modified to twice its normal depth to receive the screen. Cell growth in the experimental chamber is superior to growth in the control chamber both in speed of proliferation …
